Sometimes. A 65W charger can power a laptop whose manufacturer accepts that adapter, but it delivers far less power than a 150W adapter. The likely results are slower charging, battery drain during demanding work, or reduced performance on some machines. Whether it works depends on your exact laptop model, the port you plug into, and the charging standard that port uses. A USB-C connector alone does not prove that a port accepts USB Power Delivery (USB PD) charging.
Start with the model, not the wattage
Wattage is only one condition for compatibility. The laptop must accept the adapter’s connector, its charging protocol, and its voltage and current profile. An adapter’s advertised maximum output is not a guarantee that every laptop will draw that power. A 65W unit that matches your laptop’s input requirements can work well, while one that does not match may charge slowly, stop charging, or fail to start charging at all.

What Apple’s guidance says
Apple’s support article “Use a power adapter with your Mac” states that a Mac which charges through USB-C can use any USB-C power adapter or display, even one that provides higher or lower wattage than the adapter recommended for that Mac. Apple also recommends using at least the minimum wattage specified for your Mac to get the best charging experience.
When the delivered power is too low for the model, macOS shows a “Slow Charger” message. Treat that message as a signal that the adapter is not keeping up with the Mac. Apple also lists specific adapter and cable combinations for fast charging. A lower-wattage adapter does not enable fast charging simply because it uses USB-C.

What Lenovo’s documentation shows
A USB-C port is not always a main power input
On the Legion 5i (16-inch, 10) model, Lenovo’s user guide says a designated USB-C port conforms to USB PD but is not designed as the primary power input. Lenovo’s guide warns that when the computer is operating, power supplied through the USB-C charger may be insufficient. In that case the computer may not run at full capacity, and battery charging may stop or become very slow. This is why a free USB-C port on a laptop should not be assumed to replace the main high-power adapter under load.
Lower-wattage adapters depend on system consumption
Lenovo’s FAQ for its 45W USB-C adapter says charging speed depends on how much power the system consumes. A system drawing more than 45W can charge slowly, and Lenovo says a 65W system may lose battery charge on a 45W adapter. Lenovo also states that many systems rated at 90W and above reject 45W input. These thresholds come from Lenovo’s own products and should not be applied as universal rules to other brands.

The battery can make up the difference, for a while
Lenovo’s battery FAQ notes that a lower-wattage adapter can leave the battery supplying supplemental power during peak CPU load. The battery covers the gap during bursts, but a sustained heavy workload can drain it while the laptop remains plugged in.

| Factor | What to check | What a mismatch looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Port and connector | Which port the manufacturer designates for charging, and whether a USB-C port is a main input or an auxiliary port | Charging stops, or the laptop runs on battery under load even though it is plugged in |
| Charging protocol | Whether the port supports USB PD, and which PD version and voltage profiles the manufacturer lists | No charging at all, or a plug that fits but does not negotiate power |
| Manufacturer input rating | The input rating on the laptop’s label and the model’s approved adapter list | A warning, a rejected adapter, or a message that the power source is not supported |
| Workload draw | How much power your typical and peak tasks consume compared with the adapter’s output | Battery percentage falls during heavy use, or performance is reduced |
| Cable | Whether the cable is rated for the power level and matches the connector arrangement your setup uses | Slow charging even when the adapter is correct |
| Charge speed | Whether the adapter’s output profile can support your model’s fastest charging mode | “Slow Charger” on a Mac, or charging much slower than the original adapter |
How to check before you rely on a 65W charger
- Find the exact model number. On a Mac, choose Apple menu, then About This Mac. On other laptops, read the label on the underside or the original 150W adapter’s documentation.
- Read the input rating printed on the laptop and on the original 150W adapter, so you know the voltage and current the manufacturer expects.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and check whether it lists the 65W adapter or accepts USB-C PD charging at that wattage.
- Confirm which port the manufacturer designates as the charging input. Do not use an auxiliary USB-C port as a substitute unless the documentation says it can serve as the main input.
- Check the 65W adapter’s output profiles and the cable’s rating, not just the shape of the connector.
- Test the setup with your normal workload. Watch the battery percentage, whether charging holds steady, and whether a warning or low-power alert appears.
Signs the setup is not keeping up
- A “Slow Charger” message on a Mac, which indicates the delivered power is too low for the model
- Battery percentage falling while the laptop stays plugged in during normal use
- Charging that stops or becomes very slow when the machine is under load
- Reduced performance during demanding tasks, or a low-power alert from the operating system
- A manufacturer warning in the documentation that a port or adapter is not intended for primary charging
If you see any of these, stop relying on the substitute adapter for heavy work and switch back to the original 150W adapter or a manufacturer-approved equivalent.

- [Smart Power, Port by Port] USB-C1 delivers 65W solo; C1+C2 gives 45W+20W, C1+A 45W+18W, C2+A shares up to 15W, and all 3 run at 45W + 15W shared.
- [Stable Power, Without the Guesswork] TempGuard checks heat 1,000×/sec to help reduce heat-related slowdowns and interruptions, limiting excess heat exposure for more battery-friendly charging.
When a 65W charger is a reasonable stopgap
A 65W adapter can make sense as a temporary option when your model’s manufacturer lists it as compatible and your use is light, such as browsing, email, or document editing. Plan on slower charging and avoid long gaming, video rendering, or other sustained high-load sessions while using it.
If you decide to buy one
Buy only after confirming that your exact model’s documentation accepts the adapter’s output profile. Lenovo documents a 65W USB-C Wall Adapter with PD 3.0 and a 20V/3.25A output. That is one manufacturer’s example, and it does not mean the same adapter suits every laptop. A replacement cable is only needed if your setup calls for a USB-C or USB-C-to-MagSafe arrangement that your current cable does not match.

What the evidence does not establish
The manufacturer sources reviewed in October 2026 do not provide a general statistic on how many laptops accept a lower-wattage adapter. They also do not establish one universal wattage threshold. The Lenovo figures above describe Lenovo models only, and Apple’s guidance covers Macs that charge through USB-C. For any other brand, the model-specific support page is the authority.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 65W charger damage my laptop?
The manufacturer sources reviewed do not state that a lower-rated adapter damages a laptop. The documented outcomes are slower or stopped charging, battery drain under load, and reduced performance. If your model’s documentation does not list the adapter as compatible, use the original adapter or a manufacturer-approved equivalent instead.
