How to Display Different Videos in a YouTube Live Stream Without Ending It

YouTube playlists do not control an active live feed. Use OBS to switch local videos while keeping the encoder running, and test transitions before going public.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To show different videos during one continuing YouTube Live event, run your broadcast through an encoder such as OBS and switch the media playing inside OBS while keeping the encoder output active. YouTube’s playlist feature is for viewers; it does not make a live broadcast cycle through playlist items.

Why a YouTube playlist won’t change the live video

A YouTube playlist and a live encoder feed do different jobs. YouTube’s player can loop a video or playlist for someone watching, but that playlist is not an input that changes the video in an active broadcast. The live stream receives the feed sent by your encoder. To change what viewers see, change the media or scene in the encoder while continuing to send the feed to YouTube.

Set up multiple videos in OBS

  1. Create or open a YouTube Live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the event and connect your encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Keep the stream key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event.
  2. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video Source is available only when VLC is installed. If the source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS before looking for it again.
  3. Add a VLC Video Source. In OBS, select the scene you want viewers to see, add a VLC Video Source, and add your local video files to its playlist. Arrange them in the desired order, or choose shuffle if you want randomized playback.
  4. Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. If the source is hidden behind another source or scene, check its visibility behavior: OBS provides controls for whether hidden media stops, pauses, or continues playing.
  5. Start the encoder feed and verify the output. Check the OBS preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview before relying on the setup. Confirm that the expected video and audio are present.
  6. Change the media without ending the event. Advance the VLC playlist or switch to a scene or source containing the next video. Leave OBS’s encoder output running. The feed should continue as OBS changes what it sends, but the documentation does not guarantee that every transition will be seamless, so test your exact setup first.

Choose the right OBS source

What you want to play OBS option Useful controls
One video repeatedly Media Source Enable Loop on the source.
A sequence of local video files VLC Video Source Set the playlist order; choose Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist as needed, and set what happens when the source is hidden.

These are media files played by OBS and included in its encoder output. The documented workflow does not establish that pasting a YouTube playlist URL into an OBS VLC Video Source is a supported or reliable way to rebroadcast the playlist.

Test transitions before the public broadcast

Use a private or unlisted test event, then check the Live Control Room preview before going public. While live, monitor stream health as well as audio and video. Confirm that the next file starts as expected, audio is audible, and the encoder remains connected when you advance the playlist or switch scenes.

Do not promise yourself a gap-free handoff based on the playlist setup alone. YouTube describes latency as the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and playback for viewers; lower latency can mean more buffering. Its guidance does not quantify the effect of changing an OBS media source, so test the transition and latency setting you intend to use.

Troubleshooting

  • The live broadcast does not move to the next item. Check that you added multiple local files to the OBS VLC Video Source playlist and are advancing that source. A YouTube player playlist does not control the live encoder feed.
  • VLC Video Source is not available in OBS. Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source list again.
  • The video stops when you switch scenes. Check the VLC source’s visibility behavior. A hidden source may stop or pause depending on its setting; choose whether it should continue when hidden or keep it visible in the active scene.
  • Viewers see a blank or unexpected picture. Check the OBS preview, active scene, source visibility, and media-file availability before starting or continuing the public stream.
  • There is no sound or the audio changes unexpectedly. Check the file’s audio in OBS and monitor the Live Control Room preview and live audio. Test every transition rather than assuming each file has the same audio behavior.
  • YouTube reports a stream problem. Check Live Control Room stream health and whether OBS is still sending the feed. YouTube distinguishes ending an event from stopping or starting media within the encoder: its instructions say, “To end the stream, click End Stream and stop sending content from your encoder.”

Copyright and content checks

Changing videos inside OBS does not change the rights or YouTube policy obligations attached to those videos. Use material you have permission to broadcast, including music and other included media, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before streaming. Do not assume that a playlist, attribution, or the fact that a video is prerecorded makes a rebroadcast permissible.
