Choose an expression that fits the video
First write down the video’s real point. Then choose an expression that reinforces it: curiosity for a genuine reveal, concentration for a how-to, or concern for a problem the video actually addresses. These are creative starting points, not a formula for more clicks. Do not imply an event, reaction, or result that the video does not contain.

A strong expression is useful only if it reads clearly and accurately. If a surprised face suggests that something shocking happened when the video contains no such moment, the thumbnail risks misleading viewers.
Make the face look like you
Capture real expression references
If the thumbnail should feature you, take several photos with deliberate variations in expression and keep the framing and lighting reasonably consistent. A real photo can also be composited over an AI-generated background, an approach described by a creator in a community discussion; it is an example, not a tested best practice. A smartphone tripod with a remote shutter can make hands-free capture easier, but it is optional.

Guide an image generator with a reference
When a tool allows you to edit an uploaded reference, specify the intended emotion, gaze direction, crop, lighting, and any open space needed for text or graphics. Ask it to preserve the person’s recognizable features and change only the expression or scene elements you name. Inspect the result closely: generated edits can alter facial details or identity. There is no established best-performing image model for preserving a creator’s likeness and expression.
If the tool cannot reliably preserve your face, use the real photo and generate or select the background separately. That gives you more control over which facial features remain untouched.

Generate or assemble the thumbnail
Try YouTube’s native option if it appears in Studio
YouTube announced long-form thumbnail generation in Ask Studio. The announcement says creators can request a thumbnail and adjust colors and layouts through chat. YouTube also announced fully custom Shorts thumbnails for YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion planned. Availability can change, so check the options currently shown in your account rather than assuming every channel has them.

Use an external generator and a separate editor
An external image generator can create or edit the face and background; a layout or photo editor can then combine those elements and add any short text. Judge the tools by practical criteria: whether the face stays recognizable, whether you can control the background and layout, how easily you can revise versions, and whether the finished file meets YouTube’s upload requirements. These are comparison criteria, not verified scores for particular products.

At the finishing stage, place the face, background, and any text so the expression and main idea remain legible when the image is reduced. Compare the thumbnail with the actual video and remove anything that implies content viewers will not find there. No universal layout or expression formula is established to improve click-through.
Export to YouTube’s thumbnail requirements
YouTube Help recommends JPG or PNG. It recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio for regular video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts. The listed maximum file sizes vary by device and content type:

YouTube also notes that a vertical video with a custom 16:9 thumbnail may show an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on mobile home, explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail remains visible in other specified contexts. Check how the image looks in the surfaces where viewers will encounter it, especially if the subject or text is near the edges.
Check accuracy, likeness, and AI disclosure
Keep the thumbnail within YouTube’s policies
YouTube prohibits thumbnails that mislead viewers about a video’s content. Its rules also prohibit unauthorized impersonation, including deceptive copying of another person’s or channel’s identity and certain misleading uses of AI likenesses. Thumbnail content that violates Community Guidelines—including specified sexual, graphic, hateful, or violent content—is also prohibited. Before uploading, verify that the image depicts the video honestly and that you have permission to use the people and identity shown.

Follow the current video disclosure prompt
YouTube’s March 18, 2024 guidance described disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content that viewers could mistake for a real person, place, scene, or event; it said clearly unrealistic, animated, and production-assistance uses were not then in scope. On May 27, 2026, YouTube announced a more prominent label for photorealistic and meaningfully AI-altered or generated video content, along with new automated detection signals. Follow the disclosure prompt shown in Studio when uploading the video. Those announcements address video disclosure; they do not establish a separate thumbnail-only disclosure rule.
Common problems and fixes
- The generated face no longer looks like you: use a real photo as the face layer, generate the background separately, or retry with a reference-edit prompt that asks to preserve recognizable features and alter only the requested expression or scene.
- The expression suggests something absent from the video: choose a more accurate expression or revise the scene so it does not imply a false event or reaction.
- Text or facial details disappear in the preview: reduce the text, simplify the composition, and inspect the image at small size before export.
- The upload is rejected for size or format: export as JPG or PNG and check the relevant device and content-type limit in the table above.
- A vertical video shows a different-looking thumbnail on mobile: account for YouTube’s possible 4:5 auto-generated preview on specified mobile surfaces when designing a 16:9 custom thumbnail.
- You are unsure whether an AI-generated video needs disclosure: use the current Studio upload prompt; the cited guidance does not settle a separate thumbnail-only disclosure obligation.
