For a prerecorded file on your computer, start with OBS’s Media Source: confirm the right scene is active, the file is selected and playing, and the source is visible, positioned on the canvas, and not covered by another source. Then compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube’s live output to find where the picture disappears. A black preview usually points to the scene, source, or playback path; a good preview and recording with a black YouTube output shifts attention to the encoder, stream dashboard, or connection.
First identify which part of the stream is black
There are three useful checkpoints: the OBS preview, a recording made locally by OBS, and the live output shown in YouTube. Check them in that order. This separates a scene or file problem from an encoding or delivery problem instead of treating every black screen as the same failure.

- OBS preview is black: investigate the active scene, Media Source playback, visibility, layer order, and transform.
- Preview looks right but the local recording is black: investigate the OBS output or encoding path before troubleshooting YouTube delivery.
- Preview and local recording look right, but YouTube is black: inspect YouTube’s live dashboard for encoder errors, then check encoder status, CPU load, and the outbound connection.
YouTube Help recommends checking the picture and sound in the encoder and inspecting a local archive when diagnosing live-stream problems. Comparing those checkpoints is a practical way to narrow down which stage needs attention; it does not prove a single cause on its own.

For a video or audio file stored on your computer, use an OBS Media Source. The OBS Project’s Sources Guide describes Media Sources as a way to add audio/video files to a scene. Display, Window, Game, and Video Capture sources are for capturing a screen, application or game window, or video device; they are not required just to play a local file in your scene.

| Setup path | Appropriate content | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | A prerecorded local video or audio file | Selected file, playback, visibility, stacking order, position, and crop |
| Display, Window, Game, or Video Capture source | A screen, application or game window, or external video device | Correct capture method and target; on some multi-GPU laptops, GPU assignment may matter |
If you are intentionally showing a video player window or the whole desktop, troubleshoot that capture method and its target instead. It is a different route from adding the file directly as a Media Source.
Fix a black OBS preview
1. Confirm the active scene and source
- Check that OBS is showing the scene you intend to send to YouTube.
- In that scene’s Sources list, confirm the expected Media Source is present and enabled using its eye control.
- Open the source’s properties and verify that the intended file is selected. Confirm the source is active and the video is advancing rather than paused or stopped.
If audio plays but the picture does not, the problem is narrowed to the visual source or rendering path, but that symptom alone does not identify the cause. Check the file selection, source state, and OBS log before concluding that the file format or codec is incompatible.
2. Check what is layered above the file
OBS displays sources higher in the Sources list above lower ones. A visible source can therefore be hidden by another source layered over it. Inspect the sources above the Media Source, temporarily hide likely overlays with their eye controls, and see whether the picture appears. Restore any overlays you still need once you identify the obstruction.

3. Check position, size, and crop
Select the Media Source and inspect its bounding box in the canvas. It may be outside the visible area, scaled too small, or cropped so that the useful part of the picture is no longer visible. Use the source’s transform and crop controls to bring the image back into frame. If you change the transform, check the preview again before going live.
4. Confirm playback, not just file selection
A file appearing in the source’s properties does not establish that it is currently playing. Check that the expected clip is loaded and advancing in the scene. If playback fails, review the OBS log and confirm the selected file is accessible; do not assume a codec issue without evidence from the file and log.
If the OBS preview is good but YouTube is black
When the preview is correct, make a short local recording and inspect it before changing scene settings. If that recording is also black, focus on OBS’s output or encoding path. If it looks right but the YouTube live output does not, follow YouTube’s encoder and delivery checks:

- Check the picture and sound directly in the encoder, and make sure the encoder software is current.
- Review YouTube’s live dashboard for reported encoder errors and check the encoder’s CPU load.
- Inspect the local archive to confirm whether the video reached the recorded output correctly.
- If the encoder output is healthy, test the strength and stability of the outbound Internet connection.
YouTube suggests trying a new stream key when a third-party encoder reports an error starting the stream. That is a targeted response to an encoder-start error, not a universal fix for a black picture. Avoid replacing a working key as the first troubleshooting step when the OBS preview itself is already black.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guidance discusses GPU assignment for particular capture methods on multi-GPU laptops: Display Capture may call for OBS to use the integrated GPU, while Game or Window Capture may call for the discrete GPU. That guidance is specific to capture and browser-source rendering, and the page was last modified in 2019; its interface details may not match current systems.
Do not treat changing GPU assignment as a general fix for a local Media Source black screen. First establish that the problem involves Display, Game, or Window Capture before applying capture-specific advice.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a way to repair an OBS scene. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video while your computer is off. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay running at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
Monthly service costs $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
Do you need to buy anything to fix this?
Usually, the first step is diagnosis in OBS, not a purchase. A local file belongs in a Media Source; a capture card is for capturing a video device, not a standard requirement for playing a file. OBS’s Help Portal describes OBS as open source under GPLv2, free for any use, commercially usable, and without advertisements or bundled adware. Neither OBS’s nor YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance identifies hardware purchases as a standard fix for this symptom.
