Choose a display location that limits light
Place collectibles away from windows and direct sun. Sunlight is intense, contains high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and is difficult to control. The Library of Congress explains that light damage is cumulative: dim light over a long period can be as damaging as bright light over a short period. It can cause fading, yellowing, darkening, bleaching, embrittlement, or other color changes, and conservation treatment usually cannot reverse the underlying chemical or physical damage. Its guidance is primarily for library and archival collections, especially paper-based materials, so use it as a preservation principle rather than a universal care manual for every figure or finish. Use modest display lighting and turn it off when nobody is viewing the collection. UV-absorbing glazing can reduce UV exposure if it cannot be removed from the light source, but it is not a guarantee against fading: visible light can still damage items. Limiting both light intensity and exposure time matters, even when the display has UV-filtering glazing.
Choose between open shelving and an enclosed case
There is no single best display for every collection. The choice depends on the balance you want between access, dust and security, light exposure, and the needs of the materials.

The Library of Congress recommends secure exhibition cases or secure wall attachment to help prevent theft and vandalism. It also advises monitoring temperature and relative humidity in display cases and rooms against parameters appropriate to the materials. For a home collection, the practical takeaway is to avoid hot or damp locations and not to assume that a sealed case is automatically suitable. The guidance discusses chemically inert case materials for institutional displays; without evidence about a consumer case’s materials, do not assume or advertise that it is “archival safe.” Library of Congress display and light guidance.
Protect each component according to its material
A collector’s edition may combine paper, plastic, painted surfaces, metal, and electronic components. The care instructions for one part may not be safe for another. Check the publisher’s or manufacturer’s directions for the specific edition and component before cleaning, polishing, applying a coating, or using an adhesive.

- Figures and statues: Follow the maker’s instructions for the figure’s materials and finish. Do not assume a cleaner or polish that seems suitable for one surface is safe for painted details or another material.
- Art books and printed inserts: Keep paper items out of direct sun and handle them in a way that avoids unnecessary wear. The Library of Congress’s light guidance is most directly relevant to these paper-based parts, though it is not a product-specific cleaning guide.
- Steelbooks and other metal parts: Use only care methods approved for the particular finish; a method suitable for bare metal may harm a printed or coated surface.
- Electronic or mixed-material items: Check the maker’s guidance before using any liquid or treatment, especially where openings, coatings, or attached materials are involved.

An enclosed case can create a useful barrier against dust and handling, but it does not by itself control every preservation risk. Pay attention to where the case sits, whether it becomes hot or damp, and how much light reaches the display. A case with UV-absorbing glazing can help reduce UV exposure, but total exposure still matters because visible light can also cause cumulative damage.

For a mixed collection, keep paper items and figures arranged so that cleaning or handling one does not put another at risk. Avoid applying cleaners, coatings, or adhesives to an entire collector’s-edition set as though all its parts shared the same material and finish.

A practical display checklist
- Pick the location: Set the display away from windows and direct sunlight, and avoid hot or damp areas.
- Decide how it will be enclosed: Use open shelving for easy access or an enclosed, secure case when reducing dust access or improving security matters more. Do not treat enclosure as a substitute for light control.
- Control lighting: Use modest display lighting, switch it off when not in use, and consider UV-absorbing glazing if UV from the light source cannot be removed. Remember that glazing does not prevent visible-light damage.
- Check the contents individually: Identify the materials and finishes in the figures, books, steelbooks, and other components, then consult the applicable maker’s care instructions.
- Use only compatible care methods: If the maker’s directions do not establish that a solvent, polish, adhesive, or cleaner is suitable, do not assume that it is.
- Review the conditions: Check whether the display space and case are becoming hot or damp, and consider temperature and relative humidity in relation to the materials inside.
