There is no single “AI used” label that works everywhere. Disclose AI use according to the law, platform, publisher, contest, gallery, client, or employer governing the work. State plainly what the system did, where it affected the work, and what meaningful human review or editing followed. Use a required upload control, caption, on-work notice, methods statement, acknowledgement, or provenance record when the destination specifies one.
The practical distinction is material contribution. Generating an image, drafting a passage, translating content, cloning a voice, or changing a real person’s appearance generally deserves a more specific disclosure than spell-checking or routine production assistance. The examples below show how the European Union’s transparency rules, YouTube’s upload workflow, and a Wiley editorial agreement differ; none is a universal rule for every creative project.

Do I have to disclose that I used AI?
Start with five questions before you publish or submit:

- What rule applies? Read the current terms, submission instructions, contract, or law for that destination and your audience’s jurisdiction.
- What did AI actually do? Record whether it generated, materially transformed, translated, drafted, summarized, edited, captioned, or helped with production.
- How much of the finished work changed? A generated character, synthetic voice, or rewritten section is more material than fixing punctuation.
- Where must the notice appear? The rule may require a built-in setting, caption, visible label, methods or acknowledgements note, contract disclosure, or machine-readable provenance.
If a rule does not require a notice, a concise voluntary disclosure can still help audiences understand the work. Do not use a vague “AI-assisted” badge when the destination asks for a description of the task, and do not claim that no AI was used if it was.

How the main rules differ
These examples are deliberately side by side because disclosure duties depend on venue and content, not on a single industry custom.

The table is a comparison of these particular authorities, not a ranking. A contest, client contract, or another journal can set a different threshold or location.
What the EU AI Act requires from 2 August 2026
Article 50 does not say that every AI-assisted artwork must carry the same label. Its transparency obligations are scoped to specified categories and circumstances. The European Commission’s consolidated Article 50 text was stated to be current as of 27 July 2026; Commission guidance and its voluntary Code of Practice were updated in July and October 2026 materials.

For creators and deployers, the most relevant case is AI-generated or manipulated image, audio, or video that constitutes a deepfake. The issue is not merely whether an algorithm touched a file; it is whether the resulting media presents synthetic or manipulated content in the type of situation covered by the Article.
Article 50 contains a specific accommodation for creative work:
“Where the content forms part of an evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional or analogous work or programme, the transparency obligations set out in this paragraph are limited to disclosure of the existence of such generated or manipulated content in an appropriate manner that does not hamper the display or enjoyment of the work.”
In practice, a discreet caption, programme note, end card, or credits entry may be more appropriate for a film or installation than a warning that obscures the work. The notice still needs to communicate that generated or manipulated content exists.

Article 50 also addresses AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public about matters of public interest. The provision includes an exception when the text has undergone human review or editorial control and a natural or legal person holds editorial responsibility, provided the Article’s conditions are met. That is a scoped legal exception, not a blanket exemption for every human-edited AI draft.
Keep records that support your process: who reviewed the text, what editorial decisions were made, and who accepted responsibility. If the work falls outside the Article’s specified cases, another law, contract, or destination policy may still require a notice.
Icons, guidance, and provenance
The Commission offers guidelines, a voluntary Code of Practice, and icons for certain labeling contexts. An icon can support a transparency obligation, but it is not a universal mark that answers every legal or editorial question. A visible symbol should therefore be paired with the wording or placement the governing rule requires.
How to disclose AI-generated or altered video on YouTube
YouTube’s current guidance, accessed 4 October 2026, focuses on realistic content that could mislead viewers about a person, event, or place. Examples include making a real person appear to say or do something they did not, changing footage of a real event or location, or creating a realistic scene that never happened.

- Classify the footage before upload. Ask whether AI generated or meaningfully altered realistic content, rather than merely helping with a routine edit such as trimming or color correction.
- Open YouTube Studio’s upload flow. Use the AI-use disclosure setting provided during upload. The exact label or screen can change as YouTube updates Studio.
- Answer the disclosure question accurately. Select the option when the content meets YouTube’s listed cases. Do not rely on a generic description in the video or description field if Studio requires the dedicated control.
- Review the viewer-facing result. YouTube may show a “How this content was made” section. It can appear through creator disclosure, use of YouTube’s own generative tools, or Content Credentials.
- Keep other duties separate. A YouTube disclosure does not decide whether a law, client, broadcaster, festival, or contract requires another notice.
YouTube states that using the disclosure setting does not limit a video’s audience or eligibility to earn money. Its camera-origin information can depend on C2PA metadata, and Content Credentials may provide provenance context. Metadata is helpful evidence about origin; it is not a substitute for a required platform control or a legal, editorial, or contractual disclosure.
How to disclose AI use in a journal submission
Wiley’s Short Form CTA for Editorials, published in November 2025, illustrates a publisher agreement rather than a universal journal rule. Under that example, authors should describe generative AI use transparently and in detail in the methods, acknowledgements, or an equivalent section. The agreement says AI applications or models cannot fulfil the role of, or be listed as, an author of the contribution.
What to record for the editor
- The system or type of system used, if the journal asks for that detail.
- The task: for example, drafting, translation, coding assistance, image generation, transcription, or analysis support.
- The section, figure, table, or stage of production affected.
- The human checks, revisions, fact verification, and reference checking performed afterward.
- The person or people who accept responsibility for the final accuracy and citations.
The Wiley example excludes tools used for spelling, grammar, and general editing from its description requirement. That exclusion belongs to that agreement; another journal may ask for broader disclosure. Read the target journal’s current instructions and agreement before submission, and ask the editor when the policy is ambiguous.
How do I credit AI-generated art?
For an image, illustration, animation, music track, or installation, place the notice where an audience normally looks for authorship or production information: a caption, wall label, programme, end credits, catalogue entry, or project page. Name the contribution, not just the existence of a tool.
Generated image
“This image was generated with an AI image system from prompts by the artist. The artist selected the output and edited color, composition, and typography before publication.”
Materially altered photograph
“The background and lighting were generated or materially altered with AI; the subject and original exposure were photographed by the artist.”
AI-assisted music or sound
“AI generated the backing vocal texture. The composer wrote the melody and lyrics, selected the usable takes, and mixed the final track.”
Fiction, satire, or an installation
“This fictional scene contains AI-generated imagery.”
The last form can fit the EU creative-work accommodation when it accurately describes the work and does not obstruct its enjoyment. A gallery, festival, commissioner, or collecting institution may still require a more detailed production record.
What should I write in an AI disclosure statement?
A useful statement answers three questions: what system or category of system was involved, what task it performed, and what happened afterward. Add the affected part of the work when that helps a reader understand the contribution.
General creative-work pattern
“I used [tool or type of AI system] to [specific task] in [part or stage of the work]. I [reviewed, selected, edited, or verified] the result before publication.”

Replace the bracketed wording with facts. Do not claim review that did not happen, and do not name a tool when the venue prohibits or does not require that detail.
Writing and translation
“I used AI for an initial translation of the interview transcript. I checked the translation against the source recording, corrected terminology, and made the final wording decisions.”
Language editing only
“I used AI for spelling and grammar suggestions. The ideas, reporting, evidence, and final wording are mine.”
Substantial drafting
“AI generated an early draft of the introduction and two alternative outlines. I replaced and rewrote the draft, verified every factual claim, and approved the final text.”
Visual or multimedia work
“The central character was generated with AI and composited into the photographed set. I directed the composition, selected the final generation, and performed the retouching.”
These are plain-language patterns, not legally approved formulas. Adapt them to the destination’s required location and level of detail.
When is AI assistance routine editing rather than a material contribution?
Classifying the task helps you choose a proportionate notice, but the destination’s rule controls. Consider the difference between the following activities:
- Generation: creating a new image, voice, melody, paragraph, character, or scene from a prompt.
- Material transformation: changing a real person’s face or voice, reconstructing a real event, replacing a background, or rewriting a passage so extensively that the wording or meaning changes.
- Translation or transcription: converting language or speech, followed by human checking.
- Editorial assistance: spelling, grammar, formatting, or suggestions that a human accepts or rejects.
- Production assistance: resizing, noise reduction, masking, color cleanup, or other technical operations that do not create the expressive substance of the work.
There is no universal boundary between these categories. A journal can exempt general editing while a client contract asks you to disclose every automated system. A platform can focus on photorealistic manipulation while a gallery asks for a complete production history.
Where should the disclosure appear?
Match the placement to the audience’s point of contact:
- Upload control: use a platform’s dedicated AI-use setting when required.
- Caption or description: suitable for a single image, video, post, or audio release when the audience encounters the work online.
- Visible on-work notice: use when the governing rule calls for an immediately apparent label and the work’s presentation permits it.
- Credits or programme note: useful for films, performances, exhibitions, games, and installations, especially where an intrusive label would disrupt the experience.
- Methods or acknowledgements: appropriate for manuscripts, reports, and academic submissions.
- Machine-readable provenance: Content Credentials or related metadata can preserve origin information across a workflow, but they do not replace a required human-readable disclosure.
Store the longer production record separately when a short public notice is appropriate. Keep prompts, version history, source files, review notes, and approvals only as long as your privacy, contract, and records policies allow.

Fix: Start with the destination’s current rule and use its required channel. Add a plain-language explanation where useful.
Hiding a material contribution behind “editing”
Problem: A generated illustration or extensively rewritten passage is described only as “polished with AI.”

Over-disclosing trivial assistance
Problem: A notice implies that AI created the work when it only suggested punctuation.
Fix: Describe the limited role accurately. If the governing policy excludes spelling, grammar, or general editing, follow that policy while keeping your own records if needed.
Assuming a human edit erases every duty
Problem: The creator believes a quick review automatically removes a legal or platform requirement.

Fix: Check whether the relevant rule defines a human-review or editorial-control exception and whether all its conditions are met. Do not generalize one exception to another venue.
Relying on metadata alone
Problem: A provenance record is present, so the creator skips a required caption or upload declaration.
Fix: Treat metadata as supporting provenance. Complete the human-readable or built-in disclosure the governing rule requires.
Claiming authorship for an AI system
Problem: A manuscript lists the model as a co-author.
Fix: Follow the target publication’s authorship rule. The Wiley editorial agreement example says an AI application or model cannot fulfil the role of, or be listed as, an author; human authors retain responsibility for accuracy and references.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the destination and the audience’s relevant jurisdiction.
- Open the current policy, contract, submission instructions, or law; note its effective date and required channel.
- Describe the AI task in one sentence without minimizing or exaggerating it.
- Identify the affected section, asset, scene, voice, image, or production stage.
- Record what a human selected, edited, verified, or approved.
- Prepare the notice in the destination’s requested format: setting, caption, label, credits, methods, acknowledgements, or metadata.
- Check whether the destination requires a separate disclosure even when another platform already displays one.
- Review the final wording for accuracy, especially claims about human review, originality, authorship, and factual verification.
- Recheck the rule immediately before release when the platform or law is known to change.
What disclosure cannot decide for you
A disclosure does not by itself settle copyright ownership, permission to use a person’s likeness or voice, confidentiality, contractual rights, plagiarism, defamation, or the accuracy of a publication. Those questions require their own legal, editorial, or contractual analysis. The disclosure’s job is narrower: to communicate AI’s role through the channel that governs the work and to keep responsibility with identifiable people.

Do I need to disclose AI use if the final work looks completely human-made?

Can I disclose AI use after publication?
