There is no single disclosure that covers every situation. If you used AI while making a book, first record what it created, then check four separate destinations: your publishing platform, any copyright registration, your publisher or agent, and your readers. Each has a different trigger and purpose.
Start by recording what the AI actually did
Make an inventory before you fill out a platform form, submit a manuscript, or file for copyright registration. Record which tools you used and whether they created material that appears in the final book or merely helped you work on material you wrote.

- Manuscript: Did an AI tool generate prose, dialogue, poetry, or other text that you retained? Or did it only edit, refine, error-check, improve, or brainstorm material you created?
- Visuals: Did it create the cover, interior illustrations, or other images used in the book?
- Translation: Did AI generate any portion of a translation?
- Records: Keep relevant drafts and versions, and note which AI-created material remains in the published work.
This distinction matters: a platform may classify content by how it originated, not by how much you revised it afterward.

For books published through Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon says authors must inform KDP about AI-generated text, images, or translations when publishing a new book or editing and republishing an existing one. KDP describes AI-generated content as material created by an AI-based tool, even if you substantially edit it afterward. By contrast, KDP calls material AI-assisted when you created it and used AI to edit, refine, error-check, improve, or brainstorm it; KDP says that kind of assistance does not require disclosure under its AI-content rule. See KDP’s AI-generated content guidance.
#1 Best Overall
KDP reporting is a submission to Amazon, not automatically a public label for readers. Treat it as a platform requirement, separate from any note you choose to put in the book.
What to disclose for U.S. copyright registration
The U.S. Copyright Office’s March 16, 2023 announcement says applicants have a duty to disclose AI-generated content in works submitted for registration. This is a separate process from KDP reporting. If a publisher is handling registration, tell it what AI-generated material the book contains so the application can accurately identify the relevant human-authored portions. The Office’s announcement does not settle every question about describing a particular contribution or the protectability of a specific book; check the current registration instructions before filing. What to tell your agent or publisher
Review your publishing agreement and the publisher’s AI policy before submitting. Contract terms, originality representations, and house rules can impose obligations beyond a retailer’s workflow. The Authors Guild recommends asking an editor about applicable AI guidance and communicating early about incorporated AI outputs—especially if the publisher will file registration paperwork. If a particular use is permitted, make sure the agreement or an amendment reflects that where appropriate. The answer depends on your contract; the Guild’s advice is at AI Best Practices for Authors.
Whether and how to tell readers
Reader-facing transparency is a separate decision from platform reporting, registration, and publisher communication. The Authors Guild recommends publicly disclosing substantial AI use to generate text and notes that a book’s front matter is one possible location. That is the Guild’s recommendation, not a universal legal rule established by the sources cited here.

Keep the note specific and proportionate. For example, adapt this wording only if it accurately describes your book: “The author used [tool or type of AI tool] to [specific task]. The author reviewed and edited the resulting material.” If AI generated text, images, or translation, identify which parts or types of material it generated and describe your contribution accurately. Do not imply AI generated the manuscript if it only assisted with routine editing or brainstorming.
Review AI output before publication
Disclosure does not replace editorial responsibility. Before releasing the book, check AI output for factual errors, bias, and rights problems, and confirm that the final work follows the relevant platform rules. Avoid copying generated material into the book without review. Also consider whether uploading drafts or research to a public chatbot exposed confidential information or conflicts with an agreement. The Authors Guild discusses these precautions in its author guidance, and KDP sets out its platform policy at its AI-content help page.

The Authors Guild’s Human Authored mark is optional; using it requires registration and acceptance of license terms. It is limited to qualifying literary works whose text is human-authored except for a de minimis amount, such as AI-powered spelling and grammar checks. It is not a general certification for any book whose author reviewed AI-generated content. Check the Human Authored usage guidelines to determine eligibility.
