Yes, you can use an Oura Ring without a membership, but what remains available depends on the ring generation. Gen2 does not require a paid membership. Gen3 and newer rings still work without one, but the Oura app is limited to three daily scores and a small set of basic screens.
What works without an Oura Membership?
For Gen3 and newer rings, Oura says the app without an active membership shows your daily Readiness, Activity and Sleep scores, ring battery, basic profile information, app settings and Explore content. Oura describes use without membership as limited functionality in its General FAQs.

That means the ring does not become unusable when the subscription ends, but you lose access to the detailed analysis behind those scores and many of the tracking features commonly associated with the ring. The retained scores should not be mistaken for full access to Oura’s sleep and health insights.
Generation makes a difference
| Ring generation | Membership required? | What to expect without membership |
|---|---|---|
| Gen2 | No. Oura says Gen2 users do not need membership and are not charged a membership fee. | Some features introduced in later generations are incompatible because of hardware differences. |
| Gen3 and newer | Membership applies. | Access is limited to the three daily scores, battery, basic profile information, app settings and Explore content, according to Oura. |
These distinctions come from Oura’s Oura Membership FAQs. Oura Ring 4 follows the Gen3-and-newer membership model.

What happens if you cancel?
Oura says membership belongs to your Oura account, not to an individual ring. If you cancel but keep the account, your account information and data remain saved; Oura says that data becomes accessible again if you re-enroll. You can also export data as a CSV through Membership Hub without membership.
- Access continues until the end of the current billing period after cancellation.
- Oura says it does not offer partial refunds for canceled prepaid or annual plans after the included month has ended.
- When you pair a new or replacement Ring 4, the membership tied to your account carries over.

Is an Oura Ring worth it without a membership?
For Gen2, a paid membership is not required, though the hardware cannot support some later-generation features. For Gen3 and newer, decide based on whether the three daily scores and basic app access are enough for you: Oura’s detailed sleep analysis and many advanced tracking features require membership. Include the ongoing fee in the purchase decision rather than treating it as optional full access to the app.
If you already have a ring and are considering canceling, Oura says your account data is retained and can be exported; cancellation changes access to features rather than deleting the account data.
