The National Sheriffs’ Association has raised that concern, but the sources reviewed do not establish how often drivers do this—or show that Waze causes speeding or helps drivers avoid fines.
What Waze shows about police and enforcement
Waze lets users report police sightings along a route. Google has also described police-presence reports shared by the Maps and Waze communities, as well as alerts for some cameras that can record speeding and other traffic violations. These features are not proof that a report is accurate, available everywhere, or being used to evade enforcement.

Waze Help says users can configure alerts for report types such as police. The app also limits the number of alerts shown on a route to reduce driver distraction. Exact menus, settings and availability can vary by app version and location. Waze Help: Customise your alerts

In a March 2024 announcement about speed-limit-change alerts, Google said the alerts are meant to give drivers time to slow safely. That stated purpose is not independent evidence that they improve safety or reduce speeding.

Can drivers use Waze to avoid speeding tickets?
In principle, a driver who sees a police report could slow down near the reported location and accelerate after passing it. The National Sheriffs’ Association argued this in its 2015 “Google Waze Info Sheet.” That is an advocacy group’s concern, not a measured finding about what Waze users do.
The material reviewed here does not establish how common deliberate misuse is, whether Waze causes drivers to speed, or whether its alerts reduce the number of speeding fines. It would be misleading to treat the association’s argument as proof of any of those effects.

Police alerts can also serve a safety purpose
Police-location information is not limited to community sightings. In October 2024, Illinois described a system in which drivers approaching the GPS location of an Illinois State Police trooper could receive an alert and an icon for a police vehicle, crash or disabled vehicle. The alerts were intended to prompt drivers to slow down and move over.
This government example shows how police markers can support roadside awareness. It does not verify every community report or settle the concern that a driver might use a police alert to change speed only near enforcement.

Keep phone distraction separate from the speeding claim
Using navigation while driving can raise a separate safety issue: distraction from handling or looking at a phone. The Netherlands Police advises drivers to set navigation before departure, silence notifications and put the phone out of reach. Its October 6, 2026 report described 55 fines for holding a mobile device while driving during an enforcement day. That number concerns phone handling, not Waze use, speeding or fines avoided.
If you use Waze, set your route and alerts before moving, then leave the phone alone while driving. An alert is information to support safe driving, not a reason to speed once you pass a reported location.
Quick Recap
What the available evidence supports
- Waze supports community reports of police sightings, and Google has described police-presence and some enforcement-camera alerts in its mapping products.
- A law-enforcement association has argued that drivers could slow near a reported officer and speed afterward.
- The sources reviewed do not quantify that behavior or demonstrate that Waze causes speeding or prevents tickets.
- Police markers can also be used for roadside safety alerts, while phone distraction remains a distinct concern.
