How to Disable Webcam Access for Apps in Windows, macOS, and Your Browser

Windows and macOS control app access; Chrome, Edge, and Safari control website permissions. Follow the right steps for the camera access you want to block.

To stop a particular website from using your webcam, change that website’s camera permission in your browser. To stop a desktop app, change camera access in Windows or macOS. These are separate controls: blocking a site in Chrome does not disable the camera for every app, and turning off an operating-system permission does not replace the browser’s site settings.

Choose the permission you need to change

What you want to block Where to change it Scope
Camera access for apps on Windows Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Camera Device-wide access, individual listed Microsoft Store apps, or the shared desktop-app control
Camera access for an app on Mac System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera Individual apps shown in the permission list
Camera access for a website The browser’s camera or site-permission settings A default for sites or an individual website, depending on the browser

If a website runs in a browser, both layers can matter: the browser needs operating-system access to the camera, and the site needs permission within that browser.

Turn off camera access in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
  2. To prevent apps from accessing the camera, turn off Camera access.
  3. To block only a listed Microsoft Store app, leave the main camera controls on and switch off that app in the list.
  4. For traditional desktop apps, use Let desktop apps access your camera. This is a shared control: Windows does not provide an individual off switch here for each desktop app.

Browsers such as Edge and conferencing apps such as Teams are desktop apps for this setting. Microsoft notes that desktop apps might not appear in the app list, and some can access a camera using methods not fully represented by the controls. See Microsoft’s Windows camera app permissions guide and its camera, microphone, and privacy guide.

Windows Hello and camera indicators

Turning off camera access for apps is not a universal camera hardware shutoff: Windows Hello can still use the camera for sign-in. A camera activity light, if your device has one, indicates camera activity. Windows may show a notification instead when the device has no light.

If you use Windows 10

The camera controls are at Settings > Privacy > Camera. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the system can continue to work, but it no longer receives Microsoft’s free updates, technical support, and security fixes. Details: Microsoft’s camera permissions guide.

Turn off camera access for an app in macOS

  1. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
  2. Switch off the app whose camera access you want to block.

The list contains apps installed on the Mac that have requested access. Apple says built-in apps such as FaceTime and Photo Booth have camera access automatically. Apple documents this privacy panel for macOS Mojave and later. See Apple’s Mac camera access guide.

Block a website from using your camera

Browser permissions control websites, not every app on your computer. If a site stops working after you block its camera permission, video calls and other camera-dependent features may no longer function.

Google Chrome on desktop

  1. To set the default or review exceptions, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera.
  2. Change the default, review allowed or blocked sites, or remove an exception as needed.
  3. To change one site directly, open it, select the site-information icon beside the address, choose Site settings, and change its camera permission.

Previously allowed sites can start recording while you are on that site, but not while you are in another Chrome tab or app. A work or school administrator may manage these settings in a managed browser. See Google’s Chrome camera and microphone guide and guide to changing site permissions.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites.
  2. Select the website, then set Camera to Block.

Blocking a site can stop camera-dependent features such as video conferencing from working. This changes the site’s permission in Edge; Windows’ desktop-app camera control separately governs Edge’s access as an app. See Microsoft’s camera, microphone, and privacy guide.

Safari

  1. Open Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera.
  2. Review the setting for the relevant website or the default, then adjust it as needed.

Safari’s website permission is separate from the macOS camera permission for apps. Apple documents the Websites > Camera location, but the available choice labels may vary. See Apple’s Mac camera access guide.

What to do if an app or site still accesses the camera

  • Check both permission layers when using a website: the browser’s camera permission for the site and the operating system’s camera permission for the browser app.
  • On Windows, confirm whether the app is a listed Microsoft Store app or a desktop app. Desktop apps use a shared setting rather than separate switches.
  • On a managed Chrome browser, ask your work or school administrator if the setting is controlled by policy.
  • Remember that Windows Hello and certain built-in Mac apps have the exceptions described above; app permission settings should not be treated as a physical camera disconnect.
