To disable Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) on a standalone Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, add -insecure to the server process’s launch switches and restart the server. If you start the server through a Steam dedicated-server interface, clear the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox instead. Insecure mode is intended for controlled testing, development and plugin work; restrict access because the server no longer has VAC protection.

What the -insecure switch does
-insecure changes the security state of the CS2 server process at startup. It tells the server not to operate as a VAC-secure server. This is a launch argument, not a gameplay console command, and it takes effect only after the server process is started with that argument.

The setting is binary: a checked Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) option means VAC is enabled, while an unchecked option means VAC is disabled.
VAC-secure and insecure servers are separate security classes. Valve explains that players can use insecure servers when the game provides them, but an insecure server does not provide the protections or secure-server status associated with VAC. Do not treat the switch as a temporary cosmetic setting; it changes how the server is advertised and what security expectations apply to it.

Before you turn VAC off
- Confirm the scope. The procedure below is for a CS2 dedicated server. It is not a way to change the VAC state of every server you join.
- Decide why you need it. Valve’s multiplayer-networking documentation identifies plugin loading as a case that requires
-insecure. Local testing, development and controlled experiments are appropriate uses. - Control access. With VAC disabled, use a private, LAN-only or otherwise access-controlled environment when possible. Avoid presenting an insecure test server as a normal public competitive server.
- Record the current startup configuration. Save the existing executable path, map, ports, account-token arguments and service-manager settings before editing them. The exact command differs by operating system and hosting arrangement.
- Plan a restart window. The server must be stopped and started again with the new launch setting; adding text to a file without restarting the running process does not change its current security state.
Method 1: Add -insecure to a standalone server command
This is the direct method for a server launched from a shell, script or service manager. Keep every existing argument that your deployment already needs and add -insecure as another launch switch.
- Find the real startup command. Check the script, scheduled task, container definition or service unit that actually starts CS2. Editing a shortcut or an unused script will have no effect if another process launches the server.
- Append the switch. Place
-insecureamong the executable’s launch switches. For example:
/path/to/cs2 -dedicated -insecure +map de_dust2
The executable path and the other arguments in this example are illustrative. Your host may use a different path, map, port declaration, account token or service syntax. The documented requirement is the -insecure switch; there is no single universal CS2 command line for every host.

Method 2: Disable VAC in a Steam dedicated-server interface
Some Steam dedicated-server workflows expose the setting without requiring you to edit a command line manually. In that interface, locate the server’s security settings and find Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat).

- Open the configuration or launch screen used to start the dedicated server.
- Find the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox.
- Clear the checkbox. Steam’s description defines a checked box as VAC enabled and an unchecked box as VAC disabled.
- Apply or save the configuration.
- Stop and restart the server from that interface so the new launch configuration is used.
If the interface regenerates a script or service definition, confirm that the generated startup entry contains the insecure setting before relying on it. A graphical setting that was changed but never applied to the process will not alter a server that is already running.
Command line versus Steam interface
| Choice | Where the setting lives | Typical use | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone launch | The server executable’s launch switches, script, container or service definition | Automated hosting, local development and custom deployments | Starting the process with -insecure removes VAC-secure operation for that instance |
| Steam dedicated-server interface | The Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox | Hosts managed through a Steam-provided setup screen | Clearing the box produces the equivalent insecure setting when the server is restarted |
| Client launch | The player’s CS2 client startup environment | Client-side troubleshooting, not server administration | Does not configure the dedicated server and should not be confused with the server switch |
The first two rows describe server startup. The last row matters because CS2’s Trusted Mode documentation also discusses clients entering insecure mode when unsigned DLL injection is detected. That client-side condition prevents the client from playing on VAC-secure servers; it is not an alternative way to disable VAC on a server.
Why plugins commonly require insecure mode
Valve’s Source Multiplayer Networking documentation states that loading plugins for Counter-Strike 2 requires -insecure, because plugin loading disables VAC. This makes the setting relevant when you need to load or test server-side extensions that are not compatible with a VAC-secure process.

Use a separate test deployment for plugin development rather than changing the security state of a server used for ordinary public play. Keep the plugin files, configuration and startup command under version control or another change-tracking system so that you can identify exactly what was changed when you return to secure operation.
Do not infer that every custom file, map or configuration automatically requires VAC to be disabled. The documented requirement specifically concerns plugin loading. If a particular add-on author gives a different prerequisite, verify that requirement independently and assess whether it is appropriate for your server’s threat model.
Private, LAN and development servers
Private internet server
A password or allowlist can reduce unwanted access, but it does not restore VAC enforcement. Tell invited players that the server is insecure and limit the audience to people who understand the test environment.

LAN server
A LAN-only setup is a natural place for insecure-mode experiments because exposure can be restricted to the local network. The launch procedure remains the same: start the dedicated server with -insecure or clear the Steam security checkbox, then restart.
Plugin-development server
Keep plugin compilation, installation and testing on a disposable or isolated instance when possible. An isolated instance makes it easier to return to a known secure configuration and reduces the chance that a development file is accidentally deployed to a public server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to return to VAC-secure operation
- Stop the insecure server process.
- Remove
-insecurefrom the standalone launch switches, or reselect the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox in the Steam interface. - Remove or disable any plugin that required insecure mode before attempting secure startup.
- Save the script, service definition or graphical configuration that actually launches the server.
- Start a fresh server process and inspect its startup output.
- Test with a client that is not itself in client-side insecure mode; an unsigned DLL injection condition on the client can independently prevent play on VAC-secure servers.
Changing the configuration while leaving the old process running does not convert that process. A complete stop and start is required in either direction.

Troubleshooting when the setting appears not to work
The server still behaves as secure
- Check that the edited script is the one used by the active service, scheduler, container or hosting panel.
- Look for a second CS2 process and stop the instance that was launched with the old arguments.
- Confirm that
-insecurewas entered as a server launch switch rather than typed into the in-game console or a client shortcut. - Restart after saving the change; a live process does not reread its startup switches.
The server will not start after editing
- Compare the new command with the previous working command and restore any accidentally removed executable path or argument.
- Check quoting and spacing in the service or script syntax used by your operating system.
- Remove only the newly added switch temporarily to determine whether the failure is caused by the edit or by another configuration change, then reapply the documented setting carefully.
Players cannot join from a secure client
First distinguish server state from client state. An insecure server is not a VAC-secure server, and a client that has entered insecure mode because of unsigned DLL injection also cannot play on VAC-secure servers. Check that the client and server are being tested against the same security expectation rather than treating a connection failure as proof that the switch was ignored.

- Confirm that the plugin is installed in the location and format required by its own documentation.
- Confirm that the server was restarted with
-insecureafter the plugin was installed. - Read the server startup output for a plugin-specific error; the VAC switch alone does not guarantee that an unrelated plugin configuration is valid.
Security and operational trade-offs
| Operating mode | VAC status | Best fit | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Secure | VAC enabled | Normal public or competitive use where anti-cheat enforcement is expected | Plugins that require insecure mode cannot be used under the documented condition |
| Insecure | VAC disabled | Controlled plugin testing, development, LAN sessions and private experiments | The server loses VAC protection and should be access-controlled |
The choice is therefore operational, not a performance tweak. Use secure mode when players need a VAC-secure environment; use insecure mode only when the development or testing purpose justifies giving up that protection.
Quick Recap
What this procedure does not do
- It does not disable VAC globally for Counter-Strike 2 or for other servers.
- It does not turn a client into a secure client. Client-side Trusted Mode problems are separate.
- It does not provide a universal command line for every operating system, hosting company or service manager.
- It does not make a plugin compatible merely by starting the server insecurely; plugin files and their configuration still have to be valid.
- It does not preserve VAC protection while allowing a plugin that requires insecure mode. The documented plugin workflow explicitly disables VAC.
Quick checklist
- Identify whether the server is launched directly or through a Steam interface.
- For a direct launch, add
-insecureto the server executable’s existing switches. - For the Steam interface, clear Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat).
- Save the actual startup configuration and restart the process.
- Verify that you are testing the intended server instance.
- Use access controls while VAC is disabled.
- Remove the switch or recheck the security option and restart when returning to secure operation.
