To import a phpMyAdmin database export to your server, first select or create the destination database, then open that database in phpMyAdmin, choose Import, select the exported .sql file, review the format and character-set options, and start the import. If the dump is too large for a browser upload, transfer it to the server and load it with the MySQL client instead.

Before you start
Have the following information ready before opening phpMyAdmin or a shell:
- The exported file, normally ending in
.sqlor a documented compressed form such as.sql.gz. - The destination server hostname, port if it is not the default, database name, username, and password.
- Permission to create the database or to modify the existing one.
- Access to the phpMyAdmin instance connected to the destination server, or SSH access for a command-line import.
- A backup and rollback plan if the destination contains live application data.
Do not assume that a file named after a database will select that database automatically. Open the export in a text editor and inspect its first statements. A full dump may contain CREATE DATABASE and USE statements. A single-database export often contains table definitions and data only, so you must select or create the destination database yourself.

Protect an existing production database
Importing can create, alter, or replace objects and can insert a large amount of data. Take a fresh backup, schedule a maintenance window if the application will be offline, and decide how you will restore the previous database if validation fails. Importing into a newly created, empty database is safer than testing an unfamiliar dump over production tables.
Understand what the export contains
A SQL export is executable SQL, not merely a passive archive. It can include statements for tables, indexes, views, triggers, routines, and data. The destination account must be able to execute every statement that the file uses.

Single-database export without selection statements
If the file does not contain CREATE DATABASE or USE, create the database through your host’s control panel, ask an administrator to create it, or use SQL if your account has that privilege:
CREATE DATABASE appdb;
Select appdb in phpMyAdmin before importing, or pass its name to the MySQL client. Creating a database can be denied even when you are allowed to create tables inside an existing database.
Dump with its own database selection
If the export contains statements such as CREATE DATABASE and USE, it can select its own destination when run by an account permitted to create or access that database. In phpMyAdmin, still confirm which database is open before starting; an incorrectly selected database can place objects in the wrong location or produce an access error.
How to upload a .sql file to phpMyAdmin
For a small or moderate export, the browser method is usually the simplest approach. phpMyAdmin’s documented workflow is to open the destination database before opening the Import tab.

- Sign in to the correct phpMyAdmin server. Confirm that the instance is connected to the destination host, not a local development server or a different account.
- Open the destination database. Use the left navigation pane to select the existing database. If it does not exist, create it only if your account is allowed to do so; otherwise have the host or administrator create it.
- Open the Import tab. With the database selected, choose Import. phpMyAdmin’s documentation specifically instructs users to open a database or table before using Import when the import must target that object.
- Choose the export file. Use the file picker to select the
.sqlfile. Depending on the installation, you can also drag the file onto the upload area. Supported compressed formats can include files such as.sql.gz; use the formats displayed by your phpMyAdmin version. - Review the format and options. Leave the format set to SQL for a normal SQL dump. Compare the character-set setting with the export metadata and the destination configuration. Review any partial-import option carefully: it can help with interrupted transfers but can also leave an intentionally incomplete database.
- Start the import. Submit the form and wait for the result page. Keep the success message, warnings, and any error text. If several errors appear, record the first SQL error; later messages are often consequences of the first failure.
- Verify the result before changing the application. Check objects and representative data in the destination database before updating application settings.
Using phpMyAdmin’s server-side file directory
Many installations configure an UploadDir directory. When a browser upload is blocked by size or timeout limits, transfer the file to that server-side directory with an approved method such as SCP or FTP. The file can then be selected from the server-side list in the Import form, avoiding the browser-to-PHP upload path.
“To import data, go to the ‘Import’ tab in phpMyAdmin. To import data into a specific database or table, open the database or table before going to the ‘Import’ tab.” — phpMyAdmin documentation
How do I import a large SQL dump?
Large files can fail before MySQL reads a single statement. Browser, web-server, PHP upload, memory, and execution-time limits may interrupt the request. There is no universal file-size threshold: the effective limit depends on the server configuration and hosting environment.
Option 1: Transfer the file and use phpMyAdmin’s UploadDir
- Ask the administrator for the configured
UploadDirlocation and permitted transfer method. - Transfer the original dump to that directory with SCP or FTP. Do not alter line endings or encoding during the transfer.
- Open the destination database in phpMyAdmin and choose Import.
- Select the server-side copy from the available files, confirm the SQL format and relevant options, and start the import.
- Save the result and verify objects and data. Remove the server-side copy when your hosting policy requires it and when you no longer need it.
Option 2: Use the MySQL client over a shell
When SSH or another shell is available, the command-line client avoids the web upload request and is generally more repeatable for large dumps. The -p option prompts for the password, so the secret does not have to appear in the command itself:
mysql -h DB_HOST -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME < export.sql
Replace the placeholders with the destination host, account, database, and local path to the export. The database named after -p is the target for statements read from the file. The account must already be able to access that database.
For an export that contains its own database-selection statements, omit the database argument:

Loading a file from inside the MySQL client
Start the client, select the destination database if necessary, and use the documented source command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →source export.sql;
The path is interpreted by the client process. Use an absolute path when the current working directory is uncertain, and quote or escape the path according to the client and operating system.
Windows PowerShell redirection
In Windows PowerShell, the < operator is reserved rather than being passed to the MySQL program in the same way as in a traditional shell. MySQL documents invoking the command through cmd.exe instead:
cmd.exe /c "mysql -h DB_HOST -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME < export.sql"
Enter the password at the prompt. Avoid putting a real password in a command, script, shared terminal, or shell history.
Browser import versus command-line import
Both methods execute the SQL against the destination server. The practical difference is how the file reaches the server and how much control you have over errors and repeatability.
| Consideration | phpMyAdmin browser import | Server-side or MySQL-client import |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Small files and administrators who have phpMyAdmin but no shell access | Large dumps, repeatable migrations, and servers with SSH or approved file transfer |
| File path | Uploaded through the browser, or selected from the configured UploadDir |
Already on the server or read directly by the client process |
| Failure exposure | Can be affected by browser, PHP, HTTP, memory, and timeout limits | Avoids the web upload request; SQL errors are printed by the client or captured in terminal logs |
| Database selection | Usually determined by the database open when Import is selected | Passed as DB_NAME or selected by statements inside the dump |
| Repeatability | Manual unless you document every selection and option | Commands can be recorded and rerun after correcting the cause of a failure |
| Required access | phpMyAdmin login and permission on the selected database | Shell or file-transfer access plus a MySQL account with the required privileges |
Database and privilege preparation
MySQL authenticates the account and then checks privileges for each statement. A successful login does not prove that the account can create a database, create tables, insert rows, or create programmable objects.

| Dump operation | Capability the account may need | Typical symptom when it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Create the destination database | Permission to create databases | Database-creation statement returns an access-denied error |
| Create or alter tables and indexes | Database-level or table-level create and alter privileges | Tables are absent or the import stops on a definition statement |
| Insert data | Insert permission on the target tables | Definitions exist but rows are missing |
| Create views | Permission to create views and any required referenced-object access | View statements fail while ordinary tables import |
| Create triggers | Trigger privilege and access required by the server version | Tables load but trigger statements fail |
| Create routines | Routine-related privileges and any required execution or definition access | Procedures or functions are skipped or rejected |
An “access denied” message usually points to the wrong account, wrong selected database, or insufficient privileges. Ask the administrator to grant only the capabilities required by the dump rather than using an unrestricted account by default.
Be cautious with full-system exports
A full-system dump can contain account-management statements, users, or grants. Do not copy those statements into a shared host unless the administrator explicitly intends to change server accounts. User creation and grant operations require elevated privileges, and credentials can be exposed through logs or client history in some circumstances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility checks before retrying
Compare the source and destination environments before treating a failed import as a file-transfer problem:
- Database engine and version: Check whether the destination runs a compatible MySQL or MariaDB version. Statements accepted by one release may not be accepted by another.
- SQL mode: Strictness, quoting rules, and validation settings can change whether a statement succeeds or is rejected.
- Character set and collation: Confirm that the destination supports the definitions in the dump. Mismatches can produce errors or alter how text compares and sorts.
- Storage engines: Verify that engines named by table definitions are enabled on the destination.
- Optional features: Views, triggers, routines, generated objects, and other features may require server support and additional privileges.
Keep the original export unchanged. If an import stops, record the first failing statement and its exact error before editing or regenerating anything. A dump reproduces object definitions and table data; reloading it requires the privileges implied by those statements.
Why is my phpMyAdmin import failing?
The upload is rejected or times out
This usually occurs before SQL execution. Check the displayed upload limit and server timeout, then use the server-side UploadDir workflow or the MySQL client. Transferring the file directly to the server removes the browser upload step but does not remove database privilege or compatibility requirements.
“Access denied” appears immediately
Confirm the hostname, username, and selected database. Then ask an administrator to verify the account’s privileges for the statements in the file. A user who can log in may still lack permission to create the database, create objects, insert data, or define views, triggers, and routines.
Best Value
The database does not exist
Open the dump and determine whether it includes CREATE DATABASE and USE. If it does not, create the database through an authorized administrator and select it in phpMyAdmin or pass its name to mysql. Do not assume a database name embedded in the filename is meaningful to the server.
Tables import but views, triggers, or routines fail
Check the first error for the missing privilege, unsupported feature, or referenced object. Confirm the destination version, SQL mode, and enabled features. If the application depends on those objects, treat the import as incomplete until they are created successfully.

Compare the export’s character-set metadata with the destination and the character-set option shown by phpMyAdmin. Do not repeatedly retry with random encodings; preserve the original file and correct the source or destination configuration based on the actual metadata.
The import stopped partway through
Do not assume that a success page means every statement ran. Review warnings and errors, identify the first failed statement, and determine which objects and rows were committed before the stop. For a clean retry, restore the backup or use an empty destination so that partially imported objects do not hide the problem.
Verify the imported database
Verification should match the application’s schema rather than rely on one universal success message. Perform these checks after the import and before changing production configuration:
- Confirm the selected database. In phpMyAdmin, verify the database name in the navigation pane. In a client session, run
SELECT DATABASE();after selecting the target. - Check expected tables. Use phpMyAdmin’s table list or run
SHOW TABLES;. Compare the result with the source export’s expected objects. - Check representative data. For important tables, inspect sample records and, where appropriate, compare row counts with the source. Use schema-specific queries such as
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table_name;with an actual table name substituted. - Check views and triggers. Use the object lists in phpMyAdmin or commands such as
SHOW FULL TABLES;andSHOW TRIGGERS;. Confirm that objects required by the application exist. - Check routines and indexes. Confirm procedures, functions, and indexes that the application or maintenance jobs depend on.
- Review warnings and logs. Look for skipped statements, truncation warnings, permission errors, and character-set messages in the phpMyAdmin result or shell output.
- Update application settings only after validation. Set the application’s database host, port, database name, username, password, and any table-prefix setting to the destination values.
- Test safely. Perform a representative read and, in a non-production environment or approved maintenance window, a controlled write. Confirm that the application can reconnect after the change.
A repeatable recovery plan
When an import fails, use a controlled retry rather than repeatedly submitting the same file:
- Preserve the original export and the complete first error message.
- Identify whether the failure occurred during upload, database selection, authentication, privilege checking, SQL parsing, or object creation.
- Correct only the relevant cause: transfer method, destination database, account privilege, compatibility setting, or export content.
- Restore the destination or create a clean database when partial objects could affect the next attempt.
- Retry with the same method while capturing output, then run the verification checklist.
If you do not have permission to create databases, transfer files to the server, or grant the required privileges, provide the host administrator with the export, destination name, account name, and first failing statement. They can perform the import without exposing administrative credentials.
