How to Disable Telnet on an ASUS Router and Check for Unauthorized Access

Disable Telnet in your ASUS router settings, review logs and connected devices for warning signs, and follow ASUS’s recommended response if you suspect compromise.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To disable Telnet, sign in to your ASUS router’s local Web GUI, open Administration > System, set Enable Telnet to No, and select Apply. Then review the system log for repeated login failures or SSH keys you do not recognize, and check for unfamiliar connected devices or settings changes. Those signs warrant investigation, but none by itself proves an attacker accessed the router.

Disable Telnet in the ASUS router Web GUI

ASUS documents this setting using a ZenWiFi XT8, so menu labels and screenshots can differ by router model and software version. The instructions describe signing in through the router’s LAN IP address or http://www.asusrouter.com. Check your router’s actual setting; do not assume Telnet is off because ASUS lists No as the default in its example.

  1. Connect to your router’s local network and sign in to its Web GUI with the administrator account.
  2. Open Administration > System.
  3. Find Enable Telnet and select No.
  4. Select Apply if you changed the setting.

ASUS recommends SSH instead of Telnet if command-line access is necessary, describing SSH as encrypted network communication. That does not make SSH risk-free or necessary for ordinary router use. ASUS’s security FAQ recommends keeping both Telnet and SSH disabled when remote access is not required. See the ASUS Telnet FAQ and ASUS router security FAQ.

Check other management access settings

While reviewing Administration > System, check whether SSH or internet-based management is enabled. Turn off SSH if you do not need command-line access, and keep Web Access from WAN disabled unless you specifically need to administer the router over the internet. ASUS documents SSH access choices such as LAN only and LAN & WAN, but options vary by model and firmware.

Look for signs that deserve investigation

Open the router’s system log and review entries you cannot explain. ASUS identifies repeated login failures and unfamiliar SSH keys as checks for possible unauthorized access. Also inspect the connected-device list and look for router settings that changed without your involvement.

What AiProtection logs can—and cannot—tell you

On supported ASUS models, AiProtection logs may report that a potentially infected host tried to connect to a malicious server and the attempt was blocked. That is a signal about a possible infected device on the network; it is not evidence that someone obtained router administrator access. AiProtection is not available on every model. See ASUS AiProtection log guidance.

Respond if you suspect the router was compromised

ASUS recommends updating the firmware, factory-resetting the router to clear unauthorized or abnormal settings, and then creating a strong administrator password. A factory reset clears configuration, so make sure you can set the router up again before proceeding. This is manufacturer-recommended remediation, not a forensic determination that a specific router was compromised or fully investigated.

  1. Update the router to the latest firmware available for your model.
  2. Factory-reset the router and set it up again.
  3. Create a strong, unique administrator password.
  4. Leave Telnet, SSH, and WAN management disabled unless you have a specific need for them.

Harden the router after the review

ASUS’s general security recommendations include keeping firmware current, using separate passwords for router administration and Wi-Fi, and securing Wi-Fi with WPA2-AES or WPA3. Use AiProtection only if your model supports it, and treat it as an additional defense rather than a replacement for disabling unnecessary management services or investigating suspicious log entries. ASUS’s recommendations are in its router security FAQ.
