Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose based on what your projects and team actually need: VS Code is the safest starting point when extensions and compatibility matter; Cursor suits an AI-centered workflow in a familiar VS Code-based environment; and Zed is worth considering for native editing, built-in collaboration, and reviewable agent changes—if its extensions cover your work.
Start with the constraint that could rule an editor out
Before comparing features, identify anything your workflow cannot lose: a required extension, a team-wide setup, a privacy requirement, or a particular way of collaborating. The best choice is the editor that handles your real project without forcing costly workarounds.
- Required extensions or established team configuration: start with VS Code. Its extension system adds support for languages, frameworks, and services, and its profiles support configurable setups. VS Code’s extension documentation describes that ecosystem.
- AI-centered coding in a VS Code-based environment: try Cursor. Its documentation covers codebase understanding, planning and building, bug fixing, and reviewing changes. Cursor’s documentation describes these workflows.
- Native editing, human collaboration, and reviewable agent edits: evaluate Zed, while checking extension coverage first. Zed says it has its own extension system and does not directly support VS Code extensions. Zed’s extension documentation explains its approach.
These are starting points, not universal rankings. A must-have extension that is missing can outweigh a preferred AI workflow or collaboration feature.
Compare the workflows, not just the feature lists
| Workflow priority | Where to start | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Specific extensions, customization, or team compatibility | VS Code | Confirm that the extensions and configuration your project depends on are available to the team. |
| AI-assisted codebase work in a VS Code-based setting | Cursor | Try representative planning, implementation, bug-fixing, and review tasks. |
| Native editing, human collaboration, and agent changes you can inspect | Zed | Check required extensions and whether the collaboration and diff-review workflow fits the team. |
| Privacy-sensitive code | Compare the current settings and policies for all candidates | Review the chosen provider, model, settings, and your organization’s rules. |
| Predictable AI spending | Compare billing against actual usage | Check what usage is included, what is billed separately, and whether usage can be capped or controlled. |
VS Code: choose breadth and compatibility
VS Code is a practical choice when a project depends on particular language, framework, or service extensions, or when a team needs a configurable editor setup. Its broad extension and customization focus makes it a useful baseline for comparison. If AI is part of the workflow, VS Code also documents agent workflows, so choosing it does not mean giving up AI features. VS Code’s agent documentation outlines those capabilities.

Cursor: choose an AI-forward workflow with familiar foundations
Cursor is a VS Code-based editor oriented around AI-assisted coding. Its documented use cases include understanding a codebase, planning and building, fixing bugs, and reviewing changes. That combination may suit developers who want an AI-centered workflow without leaving a familiar editor model. Cursor describes itself as “a coding agent for building ambitious software” in its official documentation; that is the vendor’s positioning, not an independent assessment.
Zed: choose native editing and collaboration, after checking extensions
Zed describes features for multi-file changes, background agents, editable diff review, MCP, and external agent support, alongside built-in human collaboration. Those features make it a candidate for teams that want to work together in the editor and inspect agent-produced changes before accepting them. Its distinct extension system is the key compatibility trade-off: do not assume a VS Code extension will work in Zed.

Check extensions before moving a project or team
Make a short list of extensions that are essential—not merely convenient—and verify each one in the editor you are considering. Include language support, framework tooling, debugging, formatting, linting, and integrations your team uses. For Zed in particular, confirm support in its own extension system rather than assuming VS Code compatibility.
For a team migration, have more than one person try the same project. A setup that works for one developer may still miss a shared integration or configuration requirement. Keep the existing editor available until the new setup covers the essentials.

Evaluate AI by doing representative work
Vendor feature descriptions are useful for identifying workflows to try, but they do not establish which editor will work best on your codebase. Use the same tasks in each candidate and judge the result, the review process, and the amount of correction required.
- Choose a contained task from a representative project, such as tracing a bug or making a small multi-file change.
- Ask the editor to explain or plan the change before implementation, if that is part of your normal workflow.
- Inspect the proposed edits and diff. Check whether you can understand and revise the changes before applying them.
- Try a bug-fix or review task and note where the tool needs correction or misses project context.
- Compare the complete workflow, including setup, review, and any usage charges—not just how quickly a suggestion appears.
For Zed, its documented options include background agents and editable diff review. For Cursor, its documentation emphasizes codebase understanding, planning, implementation, bug fixing, and change review. VS Code also documents agent workflows. The practical distinction is how these capabilities fit your project and your preferred way to supervise changes.

Compare recurring cost using the pages checked October 4, 2026
The listed prices below are the vendors’ published plan prices on pages accessed October 4, 2026. Prices, plan inclusions, and usage rules can change; check the live pages before deciding. A subscription price alone does not establish the total cost of AI use.
| Product | Published plans | Usage-cost detail |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor | Hobby: $0; Individual: $20/month; Teams: $40/user/month; Enterprise: custom pricing | Cursor describes included usage and on-demand billing; check current plan inclusions and rates on its pricing page. |
| Zed | Personal: $0; Pro: $10/month; Business: $30/seat/month | Zed says hosted Pro usage beyond included credits is billed at API list price plus 10%; user-provided keys are also supported. Check current details on its pricing page. |
| VS Code | Not stated in the cited VS Code feature documentation | AI-related costs depend on the services and plans you choose; compare those separately for your setup. |
To estimate cost, consider how often you use AI, which models or services your workflow calls on, what the plan includes, and how additional usage is billed. For Zed’s hosted Pro usage, account for the documented charge beyond included credits; for Cursor, check the current included allowance and on-demand terms. Recalculate if your usage or team size changes.

Review privacy settings and provider terms
Privacy depends on product settings and the selected provider or model, as well as any organization policy. Read the current terms for the configuration you intend to use rather than treating an editor’s general privacy statement as a blanket guarantee.
- Cursor: Cursor says enabling Privacy Mode prevents code data from being used for training by Cursor or its providers. See its privacy information and verify the setting in your account.
- Zed: Zed says prompts and code are discarded after each request and are not used for training, while noting a short-term retention exception for certain provider-designated models. Zed describes telemetry controls separately. Review its privacy information and the terms for the model or provider you select.
- VS Code: check the current privacy settings and terms for the specific AI features and services you plan to use; the cited agent overview describes workflows, not a complete privacy comparison.
For company or regulated code, have the organization confirm that the chosen settings, provider terms, and data-handling rules meet its requirements before enabling AI features.
Treat performance claims as claims, not guarantees
Zed’s comparison page publishes startup, typing-latency, and memory comparisons with VS Code. Those figures are vendor-reported; they do not establish a controlled, independent head-to-head result across machines, extensions, projects, or all three editors. Actual experience can depend on the project and configuration. Try the editors on your own hardware and representative workload instead of choosing on a general speed claim. Zed’s comparison provides the vendor’s claims and context.
Quick Recap
A practical decision process
- List non-negotiables. Write down essential extensions, team conventions, privacy requirements, collaboration needs, and any spending limits.
- Rule out compatibility gaps. Verify the essential extensions and integrations in each candidate, especially before considering a move to Zed.
- Run the same real tasks. Test a representative codebase, AI task, and review workflow rather than relying on a feature checklist.
- Check privacy and billing. Confirm current settings and provider terms, then estimate recurring costs from actual usage.
- Choose for the whole workflow. Prefer the editor that handles daily work with acceptable setup, review effort, compatibility, and cost.
