Choose a phone-based VR viewer only if your exact foldable phone fits that specific viewer and has the sensors it requires—and you are happy with simple phone-powered VR. Choose a standalone headset for dedicated tracking, controllers or hand input, and VR software that runs without using your phone.
What is the difference?
Phone-based VR uses your phone as the display
A phone-based viewer holds a smartphone in front of your eyes and relies on the phone for the display and, in systems such as Google Cardboard, motion sensing. Google describes Cardboard as working with Android and iOS phones, with head movement detected using phone sensors and interaction through a viewer button or gaze-based controls. Compatibility varies by viewer: Google warns that not every viewer works with every phone. Its developer documentation lists Android 4.1 or higher and iOS 8.0 or higher as platform requirements (Google Cardboard developer documentation).

Google’s manufacturer help describes a holder for phones with screens up to 6 inches (Google Cardboard Manufacturer Help). That limit applies to the holder described there, not every Cardboard-style viewer. It does not confirm that a foldable phone will fit, whether folded or unfolded.

A standalone headset has its own display, processing and tracking hardware. Meta describes its VR devices as all-in-one and says they require no PC (Meta quick-start guide, updated September 9, 2026). Its current device comparison lists head and hand tracking, controllers, passthrough and standalone operation for Quest 3 and Quest 3S (Meta device comparison, updated September 30, 2026).

Will your foldable phone fit in a VR viewer?
Do not assume that a foldable’s large screen makes it suitable. Fit depends on the exact phone and viewer, including the dimensions of the phone in the required state, the viewer’s holder, hinge placement, balance and whether a case must be removed. A phone may also need a gyroscope or other motion-sensing capability for the experience to work as intended.
- Identify the exact phone and viewer models. Check the viewer maker’s compatibility information for your phone, rather than relying on a generic “Cardboard compatible” label.
- Confirm the phone’s required position. Verify whether the viewer expects the phone folded or unfolded and whether the holder accommodates its dimensions and hinge.
- Check case and sensor requirements. Find out whether you must remove the case and whether your phone has the motion sensors the viewer requires.
- Check the apps you plan to use. Confirm they support your phone’s operating system and the viewer’s control method.
Google’s general documentation does not certify any particular foldable phone and viewer pairing. Get confirmation for the exact combination from the viewer maker before buying.

Choose a phone viewer for an occasional, simple trial
A compatible viewer can be a reasonable way to try basic phone-based VR if you already own a suitable phone and do not need dedicated controllers or a broader headset platform. The key condition is confirmed fit and sensor support for your precise phone and viewer.

Choose a standalone headset for tracked interaction
A standalone headset is the better match when you want dedicated tracking, controller or hand input, passthrough, and software designed for a headset. It is also the straightforward choice if you do not want VR to depend on having your phone mounted in front of you.
