Close the window and start the game. Steam’s global overlay setting can remain enabled for every other title.
The one-game fix
Steam stores an overlay preference for each game. Changing that preference affects the selected title rather than the entire client.

- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Find the Linux game that should run without the overlay.
- Right-click its name and select Properties….
- In the General section, clear Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Close the Properties window.
- Launch the game normally.
That is the complete procedure for both a native Linux game and a Windows game running through Proton. You do not need to disable the overlay globally, change the default shortcut, or add a launch command for the usual case.
What the per-game checkbox changes
The checkbox controls Steam’s overlay integration for the title whose Properties window you opened. When it is cleared, the overlay should not appear when that game is running, even if the client-wide overlay preference is still on.

This distinction matters because Steam has two levels of control:
- Global control: the setting at Steam > Settings > In-game determines the client’s general overlay behavior.
- Per-game control: the checkbox in Library > game Properties… > General overrides the behavior for the selected title.
The standard overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab. Leaving the global setting enabled preserves that shortcut and overlay access in games that have not been individually disabled.
Keep Steam Overlay enabled for every other game
If the goal is to remove the overlay from one game while retaining it elsewhere, do not turn off the global switch.
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select In-game.
- Leave the global option that enables Steam Overlay in games turned on.
- Use the Library Properties checkbox only for the title that should not load it.
Steam applies the selected title’s per-game preference when that game starts. Other games continue to use the global setting unless they have their own per-game override.
How to confirm that the overlay is really disabled
After clearing the checkbox, close the Properties window before launching. Then use a simple check that does not alter any game files:

- Start the game from the Steam Library.
- Press Shift+Tab once. With the per-game overlay disabled, the Steam overlay should not open for that title.
- Return to the game and test the behavior that prompted the change, such as a stutter, input conflict, crash, or unwanted overlay window.
A shortcut test alone is not a complete diagnostic: a game may have its own key binding for Shift+Tab, and overlay-dependent Steamworks features can fail without producing an obvious message. Confirm the actual symptom as well as the absence of the overlay interface.
Native Linux games versus Proton games
Native Linux builds
A native Linux build uses the same Steam-client workflow described above. Open the game’s Properties dialog, clear the checkbox in General, close the dialog, and relaunch. The operating system does not require a separate Linux-only overlay switch.

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. The per-game overlay checkbox is still the first setting to change, because it belongs to Steam’s game configuration rather than to a particular executable format.
Proton also exposes per-game runtime controls in the same Properties dialog. Valve’s Proton documentation describes entering per-game configuration in Properties through Set Launch Options, with environment variables placed before %command%. Ubuntu’s documentation places Proton-version selection at Properties > Compatibility. These controls are separate from the General-tab overlay checkbox:
- Use General to enable or disable Steam Overlay for the title.
- Use Compatibility when you need to select or force a Proton version.
- Use Set Launch Options only when a launch-time override is necessary.
Changing Proton versions is not required merely because the overlay is disabled. Keep the existing compatibility selection unless you are troubleshooting a separate Proton problem.

When the checkbox does not work
Most games honor the per-game setting immediately after the next launch. If the overlay still appears, first exit the game completely, verify that the checkbox remains clear, and start the title again from Steam. Do not leave the game suspended, running in the background, or open while changing the setting.

If the checkbox is ineffective on a Linux system, a community-reported fallback is to add a Vulkan-layer environment variable to that game’s launch options:
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties….
- Remain on General and locate Launch Options or Set Launch Options.
- Enter exactly:
DISABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1=1 %command% - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
The variable is placed before %command% so Steam passes it into the game’s launch environment. It targets the Vulkan overlay layer rather than changing Steam’s general integration preference.
This is a Steam Community workaround, not a universal Valve-supported instruction. Its result can depend on the Steam and Proton versions, graphics driver, display server, rendering API, and the game itself. If the game stops launching, shows a new graphics error, or behaves worse, remove the entire launch option and retry with only the General-tab checkbox cleared.

Use the checkbox first. The launch option is a narrower technical override for cases where Steam’s normal per-game control does not produce the expected result.

Features that may stop working
Disabling the overlay is not a cosmetic change only. Valve explains that some games use the overlay in the background, and that in-game purchasing requires it. Developers can also use Steamworks-integrated overlay functionality for other features.
After disabling it, check the functions you actually use in that game:
- Steam’s in-game purchasing flow may no longer open.
- Overlay-based Steamworks functions may be unavailable or behave differently.
- Any developer feature that expects Steam’s overlay to be present may stop responding.
The game itself should still launch through Steam, but the availability of individual integrated features depends on how its developer implemented the overlay. If a missing feature is more important than the original overlay problem, re-enable the checkbox rather than adding more launch parameters.

The overlay still opens immediately
- Quit the game instead of returning only to its main menu.
- Open its Properties dialog again and confirm Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game is still cleared.
- Close Properties, then start the game from the Library.
- If it remains present, try the Vulkan launch option described above and test again.
Do not assume that a different game’s setting was changed. Each title has its own Properties window, so verify the exact game name before editing.
The game launches, but purchasing or an integrated Steam feature fails
This can be an expected consequence rather than a broken installation. Valve identifies in-game purchasing as an overlay-dependent function, and other Steamworks features may also rely on it. Re-enable the per-game checkbox and relaunch. If the feature returns, the overlay was a prerequisite for that function.
The launch-option workaround causes a launch failure
- Open the affected game’s Properties… dialog.
- Remove
DISABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1=1 %command%from Launch Options. - Leave the General-tab overlay checkbox cleared.
- Close Properties and launch again.
Because the environment variable is a community workaround, a launch failure is a reason to undo it, not to add additional variables blindly. The exact cause can vary with the game, driver, display server, Proton version, or Vulkan path.
The checkbox keeps changing back
Reopen the same game’s Properties window and inspect the General section before every test. If Steam does not retain the state, fully exit and reopen the Steam client, then set the preference again. Avoid editing several games at once so you can identify which title has the override.
Only one Proton game has the problem
Keep the global setting enabled and treat the affected title as a per-game exception. Clear its General-tab checkbox first. If that does not suppress the overlay, use the launch option for that title only; there is no need to change Proton settings or disable the overlay for unrelated games.

Shift+Tab is Steam’s default shortcut, but a user may have changed it. A customized shortcut does not alter the per-game procedure. Check the Steam client’s Settings > In-game page if you need to identify the current shortcut, while remembering that the per-game checkbox is what disables the feature for the selected title.
How to re-enable the overlay for one game
Re-enabling is the reverse of disabling:
- Open the game’s Properties dialog from the Steam Library.
- In General, select Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- If you added the Vulkan workaround, remove it from Launch Options.
- Close Properties and relaunch the game.
Remove the launch option even if checking the box appears to restore the overlay. Leaving both controls in place can make later troubleshooting confusing, and the environment-variable workaround is not needed once the standard setting works.
A practical decision path
- Need to disable one game only? Clear the checkbox in that game’s Properties… > General page.
- Want the overlay in other games? Leave Steam > Settings > In-game enabled.
- Is the title running through Proton? Use the same checkbox; use Properties > Compatibility only for Proton selection.
- Does the overlay persist on Linux? Try
DISABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1=1 %command%in that game’s launch options. - Did the workaround create a launch problem? Remove it and return to the checkbox method.
- Did a Steam feature disappear? Re-enable the overlay if that feature depends on Steam’s in-game integration.
What to remember
The reliable, supported starting point is a per-game setting: Library > game Properties… > General > clear Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. It works for native Linux games and Proton titles, and it leaves the overlay available elsewhere when the global setting remains enabled. The Vulkan environment variable is a reversible, community-reported fallback for stubborn Linux cases, but it should be treated as version- and game-dependent rather than guaranteed.
