They are different changes, and router effects vary by model and internet-service setup. Microsoft advises against disabling IPv6 casually: if you only want Windows to prefer IPv4, use its documented preference setting instead.
Windows and router settings affect different parts of your network
A Windows setting applies to that computer’s network stack or adapter. A router setting applies at the network gateway and may affect multiple devices, depending on the router, its firmware, and the ISP connection. Windows set to Automatic (DHCP) receives IP and DNS settings from the router or another access point, but that does not mean a router control disables IPv6 inside Windows.

| Choice | Scope | Best fit | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change a Windows setting | One PC or network adapter | Investigating an issue on that computer or preferring IPv4 there | Disabling protocol components is an advanced change; Microsoft warns some components may not work if IPv6 is disabled or unbound. |
| Change a router setting | The local network gateway; possible effects on multiple clients | Changing IPv6 behavior for the network, if the router and ISP support the desired configuration | Controls and consequences vary by exact model and firmware; a router setting does not necessarily turn IPv6 off on every device or upstream service. |
Check Windows IP settings before changing the protocol
For a current view of the connection’s IP settings, open Settings > Network & internet, then select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Microsoft’s Windows 10/11 guidance includes manual IPv6 address configuration, but entering an address manually is not the same as disabling IPv6.

The documented DisabledComponents value for preferring IPv4 is decimal 32 (hexadecimal 0x20). This is an advanced registry configuration, not a general-purpose speed or security tweak. Follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully and make changes only if you understand the risks.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Disable IPv6 components in Windows only for a specific troubleshooting need
Microsoft says IPv6 is a mandatory part of Windows Vista and later, and warns that disabling or unbinding it can prevent some Windows components from functioning. Its documented registry setting for disabling IPv6 components is DisabledComponents with value 0xFF at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpip6Parameters. A restart is required for the change to take effect.
This setting does not remove IPv6 entirely: Microsoft says Windows uses IPv6 internally and it cannot be completely disabled. Use the exact current Microsoft instructions rather than older advice that specifies 0xffffffff; Microsoft warns that this older value can cause a five-second startup delay. If you are not troubleshooting a specific problem, do not edit the registry just to turn IPv6 off.

How to disable IPv6 on a router
There is no verified universal router menu path. Sign in to the router’s administration interface using the manufacturer’s instructions, look for its IPv6 or internet configuration if available, and consult the manual for your exact model and firmware before changing anything. Check whether the control affects the router’s WAN connection, local network announcements, or both, and whether your ISP requires or provides IPv6.

Do not assume that a router switch makes every device or the upstream internet connection IPv4-only. Its exact effect depends on the equipment and service. If the router documentation does not clearly describe the setting, contact the manufacturer or ISP rather than guessing at a control.

Choose the smallest change that addresses the problem
- One PC has a connectivity problem: start with that Windows connection’s settings and troubleshoot the specific adapter or network before changing IPv6 protocol components.
- You want Windows to prefer IPv4: use Microsoft’s documented prefix-policy approach instead of disabling IPv6.
- You want a network-wide change: verify the exact router documentation and ISP requirements first; router controls are not interchangeable across models.
