Could Venus Have Devoured a Moon? What the New Model Says

A new simulation suggests changing tides could have destroyed a hypothetical Venusian moon, but another study finds it may never have formed.

Possibly—but no one has established that Venus ever had a moon. A 2026 numerical study proposes that, if an early Venus formed a satellite, changing tides could have pulled it inward until it broke apart. The same study finds that some modeled moons survive, while a separate impact study suggests Venus may never have formed a lasting moon in the first place.

Did Venus have a moon?

Venus has no natural satellite today, according to NASA’s Venus facts page. That present-day fact does not establish whether it had a moon billions of years ago. The possibility is the subject of computer models, not a discovery of a former moon or direct physical evidence that one existed.

The new proposal comes from a 2026 arXiv preprint by Stephen R. Kane, Franck Selsis, Jeremy Leconte and Sean N. Raymond, titled “Tidal Demise: The Evolution and Fate of a Hypothetical Venus Moon.” Because it is a preprint, its findings should be treated as provisional rather than as a settled account of Venus’s history. How could Venus have pulled a moon inward?

Tides can exchange angular momentum between a planet’s rotation and a satellite’s orbit. Whether that exchange moves a moon outward or inward depends on how the planet’s rotation compares with the moon’s orbital motion. The boundary between those regimes is the synchronous radius: the orbital distance at which a satellite would circle at the same rate that the planet rotates.

In Kane and colleagues’ simulations, Venus’s spin slows over time, moving that boundary. In many modeled cases, it passes the moon’s orbit and reverses the direction of tidal migration. The moon then spirals inward, reaches the Roche limit—the distance inside which tidal forces can disrupt it—and may break into debris that is eventually accreted by Venus. “Devoured” is a vivid description of that proposed sequence, not an observed collision.

When does the model allow a moon to survive?

The preprint explores initial Venus spin periods from 5 to 100 hours and moon masses from 0.01 to 10 lunar masses. It also varies eccentricity, starting orbit and tidal dissipation, and compares two ways of describing tides: constant-Q and constant-time-lag models. These are simulation inputs, not measurements of early Venus.

Within the paper’s assumed setup, a circular moon with the mass of Earth’s Moon can survive in both tidal models when Venus initially spins at about 12 hours or faster. Slower initial rotation or a more massive moon often favors destruction. Eccentricity and the choice of tidal prescription also affect which cases survive; the models do not give identical outcomes in every scenario. The roughly 12-hour boundary is therefore a result of this study’s assumptions, not a universal threshold or a known property of ancient Venus.

The authors summarize the implication for a subset of their modeled starting conditions: “For last-impact conditions within this region, the present absence of a Venusian satellite arises through tidal evolution alone; a subsequent catastrophic stripping event, while capable of removing a moon, is not required.” That statement describes what their model can produce, not proof that Venus followed that path.

Could Venus have failed to form a lasting moon?

Yes. A different explanation starts earlier, with the giant impact that may have shaped Venus’s rotation. A 2025 simulation study by Bussmann and colleagues examines impacts compatible with Venus’s present spin. It reports that these scenarios typically produce minimal debris disks inside Venus’s synchronous orbit. Material there would likely fall back onto the planet rather than remain in orbit long enough to assemble into a lasting moon. Read the impact study.

The two explanations concern different stages. In the impact scenario, suitable orbiting debris is scarce and a lasting moon may never form. In the tidal-demise scenario, a moon forms but later migrates inward and is disrupted. Both are simulation-based accounts, and neither establishes which, if either, describes Venus’s actual history.

Question Impact and reaccretion scenario Tidal-demise scenario
When is the moon absent? A lasting moon may never form after the impact. A moon forms, then is lost later.
Proposed mechanism Too little suitable orbiting debris; material likely reaccretes onto Venus. Changing tidal exchange reverses migration and draws the moon inward.
Evidence described in the cited study 2025 simulations of giant impacts compatible with Venus’s present rotation. 2026 tidal-evolution simulations of hypothetical moons.
Does it establish Venus’s history? No. No.

What does “Venus ate its moon” really mean?

It means that a moon, if one existed, might have been driven inward by tidal evolution and broken apart near Venus—not that astronomers have found remains or observed an ancient impact. In WIRED, lead author Stephen R. Kane put the idea this way: “Venus didn’t require a catastrophe to arrive at what we can see today.” He also said, “It turns out the gravity of the planet itself combined with the rate at which it spins naturally caused the moon to collapse on top of it.” These are explanations of the modeled mechanism, not evidence that a Venusian moon has been detected. WIRED’s report quotes Kane and summarizes the proposal.
