To stop automatic SHIELD system upgrades, open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade and turn Auto-upgrade off. You can still check for and install an update manually from the same screen.
Turn off automatic updates on SHIELD TV
- From the SHIELD TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Device Preferences > About > System upgrade.
- Turn Auto-upgrade off.
NVIDIA says SHIELD can automatically download and install system upgrades when this option is enabled. Its guide documents the control and the manual update check on the same screen: NVIDIA SHIELD TV software upgrade guide.

Check for updates manually later
Return to Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade and use the update check there when you decide you are ready to update. Turning off Auto-upgrade disables the automatic process; it does not remove the manual check documented by NVIDIA.
If you cannot find Auto-upgrade
Menu labels can vary with SHIELD software. NVIDIA’s older documentation gives the path as Settings > About > System upgrade > Auto-upgrade, and its SHIELD 7.2 release notes record the addition of this option: SHIELD TV 7.2 release notes. If the newer path is not present, inspect the About or System upgrade menus on your installed software rather than assuming every version uses identical labels.

What the setting controls
This setting applies to SHIELD system upgrades. NVIDIA’s software page lists SHIELD Software & Firmware Upgrade V9.2.4; available software can change, so check NVIDIA’s current SHIELD software upgrade page for the release applicable to your device.
