How to Set Up a Brick So Essential Apps Stay Accessible

Create or edit a Brick mode, choose Allow, and select the apps and websites you need during a session. Setup steps and platform-specific limits for iPhone and Android.

To keep essential apps available during a Brick session, create or edit a mode, set it to Allow, and select the apps—and any websites—you want to use. Allow mode restricts everything except the items you select. Brick’s initial setup flows start by asking what to block, so an allow list requires a separate mode change after onboarding.

Choose between Block and Allow mode

Brick offers two ways to define what remains usable during a session:

Mode What remains accessible When it fits
Block Apps and websites you did not select; the items you selected are restricted. Use it when you want to block a relatively short list of distractions.
Allow Only apps and websites you selected; everything else is restricted. Use it when you want to preserve a short list of essentials, such as communication, maps, transit, authentication, work, or caregiving apps.

Brick’s mode guide says a mode can include up to 50 apps and websites. If a Block mode reaches that limit, Brick suggests that Allow mode may be a better fit. Brick’s guide to creating or editing a mode explains the two choices.

Finish setup on your phone first

iPhone

  1. Install Brick, sign in with your email address, and enter the verification code Brick sends.
  2. When prompted, continue through the iPhone Screen Time permission prompt, then choose Allow access in the Brick app.
  3. Complete onboarding. The first-mode flow asks you to choose apps to block; after onboarding, create or edit a mode and choose Allow to set up an essentials list. See the Brick iPhone setup guide.

Android

  1. Turn on NFC in your phone’s Settings before starting Brick setup.
  2. Sign in with email and verify your account.
  3. Grant the requested permissions. For Accessibility, open device settings, select Brick App Blocker, and enable it. Also grant Alarms & reminders and Notification access, returning to Brick after each permission.
  4. Complete initial mode setup, then create or edit a mode and choose Allow to select the apps you need. Brick’s Android setup guide lists the current setup steps.

Create or edit an Allow mode

Your phone must be Unbricked before you can edit modes or schedules. The app’s mode guide gives this path:

#1 Best Overall
The Brick Smartphone Access Blocker, Subscription-Free Phone Lock
  • Take Back Control of Your Screen Time: Brick is a physical device that temporarily removes distracting apps and their notifications from your phone by creating real world friction. When you're ready to reconnect, return to your brick and tap to unblock your apps. Includes 1 grey Brick.
  • Effortless Control: Brick is subscription-free and includes lifetime access to the Brick app at no additional cost. No complex setups, just more time for what matters.
  • How to Use: Open the Brick app and choose which apps or websites you want to block. Tap your phone to the Brick to activate it and turn your phone back into a tool that supports your goals. When you're ready to reconnect, simply tap again to regain access.
  • Custom Modes: Create custom modes for different parts of your day — each with its own set of blocked apps. Boost productivity in Work mode, study without distractions in School mode, and be present at home in Family Time mode.
  • Track Usage: Make digital health a daily habit. As soon as your phone is Bricked, a timer starts tracking how long you are staying focused for. You can monitor your Brick activity such as hours spent Bricked or daily average Bricked time in the app.
  1. Tap the mode name beneath the Brick icon.
  2. Select an existing mode or create a new one, then tap Edit.
  3. Choose Allow.
  4. Select the apps you want to keep available and save the mode.

Think through the situations in which you will use the session before activating it. You might include apps for urgent communication, navigation, authentication, transport, work, or caregiving. That is a practical checklist, not a manufacturer-tested list of required apps. Try the mode while your phone is nearby and confirm the apps and websites you depend on are reachable.

Keep websites accessible too

In Allow mode, select the browser and each website you need, or use the mode’s option to allow all websites. A website may not work simply because its browser is allowed: select the sites as well when using the individual-site option. Brick says Safari’s available website choices are controlled by Apple, and Brick cannot add sites to that list. Brick’s troubleshooting guidance also says it can block other browser apps, such as Chrome, but cannot block specific website links inside non-Safari browsers.

Check compatibility and exceptions

It says Brick can block any iPhone app except Phone, and any Android app except Phone and Launcher; it also lists support for up to 10 custom modes. These are Brick’s published compatibility and feature details, so check its FAQ for current information before relying on them.

App availability can also depend on operating-system permissions and other screen-time controls. On iPhone, Brick recommends checking Settings > Screen Time > Always Allowed if an app behaves differently from the mode settings. If Brick is not blocking any apps, verify its Screen Time access and check for conflicting App Limits or other active screen-time app sessions in Brick’s “No apps blocking” troubleshooting guide.
