Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo disable automatic GPU tuning, open the NVIDIA App, choose System in the left navigation, open Performance, and switch Automatic Tuning (or Enable automatic tuning) to Off. Stay on that page until the control no longer indicates that automatic tuning is enabled.
The setting does not uninstall the NVIDIA App or turn off unrelated driver, game, overlay, or monitoring features. It stops the app from automatically scanning and tuning the GPU. NVIDIA has changed labels and layouts between releases, so the System → Performance location is more reliable than the exact wording.

What automatic tuning does
Automatic Tuning is the one-click overclocking feature in the NVIDIA App’s Performance panel. NVIDIA describes it as an advanced scanning algorithm that tests the graphics card, selects an automatic overclock, and manages the resulting tuning profile.

During the initial process, NVIDIA says the app tests the GPU’s capabilities for 10–20 minutes (NVIDIA, 2024). The company recommends leaving the computer idle while the scan runs. After the first pass, the app can perform additional checkup scans periodically rather than treating the first result as permanent.

An overclock can increase performance, but it changes the GPU’s operating behavior. NVIDIA cautions that overclocking may make a PC unstable or produce visual artifacts in certain games. NVIDIA also says Automatic Tuning will not damage the GPU or invalidate its warranty. Disabling the feature is therefore useful when you want stock, repeatable behavior, when a scan is inconvenient, or when a game becomes less stable after tuning.
Turn off Automatic Tuning: the exact steps
- Open the NVIDIA App. Launch it from the Windows Start menu, desktop shortcut, or notification-area icon.
- Select System. In the left navigation, click System. Do not use the separate graphics-driver, library, or overlay pages; the tuning control is in the System section.
- Open Performance. Select the Performance panel within System. This page contains GPU statistics and the automatic-tuning controls.
- Find the automatic-tuning switch. Look for Automatic Tuning or Enable automatic tuning. NVIDIA has used both labels as the interface has changed.
- Switch it off. Click or tap the toggle so it is in the Off position. If a confirmation appears, accept it.
- Verify the state. Remain on System → Performance and confirm that the panel no longer shows automatic tuning as enabled. A disabled switch is the important result; the surrounding statistics and other Performance controls may remain available.
You do not need to uninstall the app, remove the graphics driver, or disable every NVIDIA background feature to stop this particular function.
Where is “Enable automatic tuning”?
In some NVIDIA App releases, the control is written as Enable automatic tuning; in others, the heading is shortened to Automatic Tuning. Both refer to the same setting. The control can also move slightly within the Performance panel when NVIDIA revises the layout.

Why the NVIDIA App keeps scanning your GPU
The recurring scans are part of Automatic Tuning’s design. The first scan establishes what NVIDIA’s algorithm considers a safe overclock for that GPU. NVIDIA says the initial scan takes 10–20 minutes and recommends leaving the PC idle. The app then manages the tuning profile and may run additional checkup scans periodically.
If you see a scan after startup, after opening the Performance panel, or at another interval, first check the switch in System → Performance. If it is still enabled, turn it off using the steps above. A scan that began before you changed the setting may need to finish or be cancelled by the control presented on screen; the exact cancellation wording depends on the app release.
Reasons to disable automatic GPU tuning
Predictable stock behavior
With automatic tuning off, the app is no longer instructed to apply and manage its automatic overclock. This is preferable for troubleshooting because clock behavior is easier to reproduce from one test run to the next.
Fewer interruptions and background scans
The initial 10–20 minute test can use the computer while it evaluates the GPU. Periodic checkups add further scan activity. Turning the feature off avoids those automatic scans, which matters on a workstation, a shared PC, or a system that must remain available for long-running tasks.
Investigating crashes or visual artifacts
NVIDIA warns that overclocking can cause instability or artifacts in some titles. If a game begins crashing, shows flickering or corrupted textures, or behaves inconsistently after tuning, disabling the automatic feature removes one documented variable from the investigation.

Repeatable benchmarking
Benchmarks are easier to compare when the GPU is not being retuned between runs. Automatic profile management and later checkup scans can change the conditions, so a fixed, stock configuration is the cleaner baseline for troubleshooting or comparing driver versions.

Leave tuning on or turn it off?
The choice is mainly between convenience and control. NVIDIA’s documentation supports the behaviors in the table; the practical consequences are a decision framework rather than a promise of a particular performance increase.
| Consideration | Automatic Tuning on | Automatic Tuning off |
|---|---|---|
| Performance approach | The app scans the GPU and applies an automatic overclock intended to improve performance. | The app does not perform its automatic tuning process; stock, manually configured, or otherwise existing settings remain the responsibility of the user. |
| Initial activity | NVIDIA says the first scan takes 10–20 minutes and recommends leaving the PC idle. | No new initial automatic scan is requested by this setting. |
| Recurring activity | The app can perform periodic checkup scans and manage the tuning profile. | Automatic checkup scans are no longer requested by the disabled feature. |
| Stability | NVIDIA cautions that overclocking may cause instability or visual artifacts in certain games. | Removing automatic tuning gives you a more predictable baseline for testing; it does not by itself diagnose every possible crash. |

| Other NVIDIA App features | Available alongside the tuning feature. | Remain available; turning off this switch does not uninstall the app or disable unrelated features. |
What changes after you turn it off
The direct change is limited to automatic GPU tuning. The NVIDIA App can still be installed and used for the other functions exposed in your release, and the Performance page can still be used for monitoring. You are disabling the automatic scan-and-profile workflow, not removing NVIDIA software from Windows.
The available documentation explains what the switch enables, but it does not specify in every release whether an overclock already applied by a completed scan is immediately replaced with stock clocks when the switch is turned off. If you need to establish stock behavior, use the controls visible in your current Performance panel, restart Windows if appropriate for your troubleshooting procedure, and verify the resulting clock behavior with a monitoring utility. Do not assume that merely closing the app has the same effect as switching the feature off.
Troubleshooting when the switch is missing or ineffective
The Performance page is not visible
- Confirm that you opened System in the left navigation before looking for Performance.
- Expand the NVIDIA App window or scroll within the System page; a narrow window can hide cards lower in the panel.
- Look for the alternate label Enable automatic tuning rather than only searching for the words “AI” or “overclock.”
The label differs from the instructions
NVIDIA changes labels and layouts across releases. Stay in System → Performance and identify the control that describes automatic tuning or an automatic GPU scan. The wording may not match screenshots or older help pages exactly.

The app is scanning right now
Do not treat a running scan as proof that the switch is off. Return to the Performance panel and inspect the automatic-tuning state. If the interface offers a stop or cancel action, use it, then set the main automatic-tuning switch to Off and verify the final state. If no cancellation action is shown, wait for the panel to finish updating and check the switch again.
The GPU still behaves as if it was tuned
Turning the feature off prevents the automatic workflow from continuing, but the supplied NVIDIA description does not guarantee how an already-created profile is handled in every app version. Check the Performance panel for a reset, default, or profile control if your release provides one. If you cannot identify such a control, record the current clocks and temperatures, restart, and compare them with the behavior you are trying to establish. Avoid changing several unrelated driver or game settings at the same time, or you will lose a clear baseline.
A game still crashes or shows artifacts
NVIDIA’s warning concerns possible overclock-related instability, but disabling Automatic Tuning cannot rule out every other cause. Confirm that the switch is off, reproduce the problem under the same game settings, and note whether the symptoms change. If artifacts continue with automatic tuning disabled, investigate other graphics, driver, temperature, memory, or game-specific causes separately rather than repeatedly toggling the same control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify that automatic tuning is really disabled
Use a short verification checklist after changing the setting:
- System is selected in the left navigation.
- Performance is open.
- The control reads Off, or the enable switch is visibly not selected.
- The panel does not show an active automatic scan or an enabled automatic-tuning status.
- After reopening the NVIDIA App, the setting remains off.
Checking again after reopening the app is useful because it distinguishes a saved setting from a temporary visual change. If the switch returns to On, set it to Off once more and note the app version and any message displayed; NVIDIA’s interface can vary between releases.
Best Value
Can you turn it back on later?
Yes. Return to NVIDIA App → System → Performance and enable Automatic Tuning (or Enable automatic tuning). If you do, plan for the initial scan described by NVIDIA: 10–20 minutes, with the computer left idle while the algorithm tests the GPU. The app may also perform periodic checkup scans afterward.
Re-enable it only when the convenience of an automatic overclock is more valuable to you than a fixed, reproducible configuration. If you are diagnosing a crash, artifact, benchmark discrepancy, or unwanted background activity, leave it off until that work is complete.
Frequently asked questions
Is “AI GPU tuning” a separate switch?
No separate AI-labeled control is required. In the NVIDIA App, the relevant setting is called Automatic Tuning or Enable automatic tuning in System → Performance.
Will disabling it remove the NVIDIA App?
No. It disables this automatic tuning feature only. The app remains installed, and unrelated functions are not turned off by this switch.
How long does the automatic scan take?
NVIDIA says the initial scan takes 10–20 minutes and recommends leaving the computer idle during it. Later checkup scans may also occur while the feature remains enabled.
Can automatic tuning damage my GPU?
NVIDIA says Automatic Tuning will not damage the GPU or invalidate its warranty. The company nevertheless warns that overclocking can cause instability or visual artifacts in certain games.
Do I need to disable automatic tuning to monitor my GPU?
No. The Performance panel can continue to provide GPU statistics when automatic tuning is off. You are disabling the automatic scan-and-profile function, not the monitoring page itself.
The Bottom Line
Use NVIDIA App → System → Performance, switch Automatic Tuning or Enable automatic tuning off, and verify that the panel shows it as disabled. This stops the app’s automatic scans and overclock-management workflow while leaving the NVIDIA App and its unrelated features installed.
