To stop Alexa from placing Amazon orders by voice, open the Alexa app and go to More > Settings > Account Settings > Voice Purchasing, then turn voice purchasing off. You can instead require a spoken confirmation code or disable purchasing only in kid skills. The setting may not cover transactions a third-party skill processes itself.
Turn off voice purchasing in the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select More, then Settings.
- Open Account Settings and select Voice Purchasing.
- Turn off voice purchasing to block Amazon voice purchases through Alexa.
Amazon says voice purchasing is enabled by default. The setting is an account control; you do not need a particular Echo device to change it. If the labels differ in your app, search Settings for “Voice Purchasing.” Menu wording and placement can vary by app version or marketplace. Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs documents this path.

Choose the level of control you need
| Option | Scope | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off voice purchasing | All Amazon voice purchases governed by the setting | Prevents Alexa from making those purchases by voice. |
| Require a confirmation code | Purchases that use the setting | Alexa requires the spoken code before completing a purchase; this adds friction but is not a guarantee of privacy from nearby listeners. |
| Disable purchasing in kid skills | Purchases through kid skills | Restricts that category without necessarily turning off other voice purchasing. |
Amazon’s FAQ describes eligible product orders and reorders through Amazon, plus subscriptions and skill purchases; the exact flow depends on the service and payment arrangement. Use the all-purchases switch if your goal is to prevent Amazon voice orders broadly. Choose the narrower controls only if they match the specific household concern. Amazon’s FAQ lists these controls.
Check third-party skill payments separately
Turning off Alexa voice purchasing does not necessarily stop every transaction started through a skill. Amazon cautions that its settings may not apply when a customer gives payment details directly to a third-party provider, and some skill purchases may be processed outside Amazon. If a particular skill can charge you, review that provider’s payment settings and terms as well as the Alexa setting. See Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use and its documentation on purchases in kid skills.

- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Manage purchases through kid skills
Kid-skill purchases have separate enablement and approval controls. Amazon says approval is required by default for Amazon voice purchases through kid skills. Its developer documentation explains that turning off voice purchasing or kid-skill purchasing prevents new premium-content purchases through kid skills, while content already purchased remains accessible. The consumer app’s labels and placement may differ, so check the current controls in your account rather than relying on an older screenshot. Amazon’s FAQ and kid-skills documentation describe these distinctions.

- Confirm that the Alexa app is signed in to the account you want to change.
- Check the account’s marketplace and look under Account Settings for Voice Purchasing.
- Search the app’s Settings for “Voice Purchasing” if the expected path differs.
- If the purchase is made through a third-party skill, check whether that provider handles payment directly; Amazon’s switch may not apply.
Amazon does not establish one alternative navigation path for every app version or country, so follow the labels currently shown in your app.
