A PhantomJS segmentation fault is a process crash, not a diagnosis—and the query alone does not identify its cause. Record your exact PhantomJS version and operating system, reduce the page and script to the smallest reproducible case, and collect a crash trace using the method that matches how PhantomJS was installed. There is no established universal fix for screenshot-related segmentation faults.
What to record before changing anything
Capture the environment and the precise point where the process fails. The PhantomJS project’s troubleshooting guide warns that multiple installations can conflict, while its issue-reporting guidance asks for version and operating-system details.

- Run
phantomjs --versionand save the full output. - Record the operating system and version, machine architecture, and how PhantomJS was installed or built.
- Check whether more than one PhantomJS version is installed and which executable your shell or calling application actually launches.
- Note whether the crash occurs at startup, while opening the page, or during rendering; include the page URL or local input, output format, viewport settings, and timing behavior.
- Save the terminal output and any crash dump. Do not treat the presence of a dump as evidence of a particular root cause.
Reduce the screenshot case
Make a minimal script and page that still reproduce the failure. Remove unrelated callbacks, page settings, and application code one change at a time, while keeping the target input, render format, and relevant timing explicit. If the crash disappears, restore changes individually to identify what affects reproduction. A failure limited to one URL, format, or environment is useful evidence, but does not by itself explain the fault.
The documented capture flow is to create a WebPage, open a page, and call page.render. The official screen-capture documentation lists PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF output. A minimal illustrative script is:

Collect a trace that matches your build
Official binary
For an official binary, follow the project’s crash-reporting guide: use symbol files matching the exact binary version and process the generated dump with minidump_stackwalk. If you get no useful stack output, the guide advises removing error redirection and checking file permissions. A symbol-file mismatch can make a trace less useful.

Build compiled from source
For a source build, the project describes building with debug symbols and running PhantomJS under gdb. Reproduce the crash and enter bt at the debugger prompt to print a backtrace. The project explicitly warns that crash dumps from official binaries are not useful for source builds, so use the workflow for the build you actually ran.
Check environment-specific branches only when they fit
Use symptoms to decide which environment checks are relevant; none is established as the general cause of screenshot segmentation faults.

- Wrong or duplicate executable: verify the version and executable path used by your script or test runner, especially if multiple installations exist.
- HTTPS fails but HTTP works: the troubleshooting guide suggests checking SSL/TLS libraries, commonly OpenSSL, as an initial avenue.
- Process blocked by policy: the guide notes that SELinux can stop PhantomJS from working. Investigate this branch if the system logs or behavior point to a policy denial.
- Only a particular page or output fails: retain that distinction in the reduced test case. It narrows the conditions for reproduction but does not prove that the page or format is the underlying cause.
What historical reports do—and do not—show
Issue reports illustrate why a version number or operating system alone is not enough to diagnose a new crash:
- A May 2014 report describes PDF rendering crashes with PhantomJS 1.9.7 on Ubuntu 14.04 and 12.04; the reporter said it worked on OS X. It does not establish Ubuntu, PDF output, or a particular library as a general cause.
- A January 2017 report describes a crash involving a minimal JavaScript snippet with PhantomJS 2.1.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04. It was not evidence of one screenshot-specific failure or a universal workaround.
- A January 2023 report concerns a Karma build repeatedly failing to start PhantomJS and producing crash dumps. A startup failure is distinct from a crash during page rendering.
Report the failure so it can be reproduced
If you file an issue, include the exact version, operating system, reproducible steps, expected and actual behavior, and the smallest test case you can produce. Attach the matching dump or backtrace. The project asks for these details in its issue-reporting guidance and cautions that volunteer maintenance capacity is limited.

Maintenance expectations
The PhantomJS homepage states: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” See the project homepage. That status matters when deciding whether to keep investing in a PhantomJS-based workflow; the reviewed reports do not establish that a fix for this particular crash is available.
