Saving an ordinary screenshot as PNG alone does not make an opaque background transparent. Decide first whether you need the viewport, a clipped region, or the full document; the capture settings differ.
Capture a transparent screenshot with CDP
This workflow uses Chromium’s DevTools Protocol. After navigating and waiting for the desired page state, enable a transparent default background, capture a PNG, and clear the override so it does not affect later captures in a reused target.

- Navigate and wait. Load the page and wait for the content and page state you want to capture.
- Set the transparent background. Send
Emulation.setDefaultBackgroundColorOverridewith{"color":{"r":0,"g":0,"b":0,"a":0}}. - Capture as PNG. Call
Page.captureScreenshotwith{"format":"png"}. - Clear the override. Call
Emulation.setDefaultBackgroundColorOverridewithout acolorparameter, or restore the prior emulation state.
CDP documents JPEG, PNG, and WebP output, with PNG as the default. PNG is the simplest choice when you need alpha transparency. The protocol also specifies that omitting the color clears an existing background override. See the CDP Emulation method and CDP screenshot method.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Clipped region
Use the capture method’s clip configuration when you need a specific region rather than the viewport or whole document. The desired region and scale are part of the screenshot parameters; verify the resulting dimensions for your target page.
Full page
For a full-document capture, set captureBeyondViewport: true. With fromSurface: true and no clip, Chromium’s handler uses its full-page capture route. captureBeyondViewport is optional, experimental, and defaults to false, so check support in the Chromium version you run.

Use Puppeteer when you want a wrapper
Puppeteer exposes the omitBackground screenshot option. Its CDP implementation applies a transparent background override for PNG or WebP capture, takes the screenshot, and resets the override afterward. This is more convenient than managing the protocol state yourself. See Puppeteer screenshot options.

Why the basic Chrome screenshot flag is not enough
Chrome Headless documents --screenshot for saving a screenshot named screenshot.png in the current working directory, and recommends --window-size to set the viewport. Its reference also documents --timeout to bound the wait before capture. It does not document a transparent-background switch for --screenshot, so using that flag alone does not establish that the output will have transparent pixels. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.

The Chromium headless shell source parses --default-background-color as eight hexadecimal digits representing red, green, blue, and alpha bytes. This is a shell-specific source detail, not a guarantee that every Chrome CLI build exposes the same flag. Confirm the option in the exact binary and version you use before relying on it: headless shell switch source.
Check the output and manage compatibility
- Inspect alpha, not just the file extension. A PNG can still contain an opaque background. Verify that pixels outside the page content have alpha zero in an image editor or by reading the image’s alpha channel.
- Keep the page’s own background in mind. The CDP override changes the default background; page content that explicitly paints a background is still page content and may remain visible.
- Reset state between captures. If the browser target is reused, clear the override after the capture to avoid carrying it into subsequent screenshots.
- Test the platform you deploy on. Chromium browser tests cover transparent viewport and beyond-viewport captures, but mark relevant cases disabled on Android and note an Android scrollbar issue with semi-transparent viewport captures. Confirm behavior on your exact Chromium build and platform; see the Chromium protocol browser tests.
Troubleshooting
The PNG background is still opaque
Confirm that the transparent override was sent to the same target you capture, with a set to 0, and that the page was captured after the override. Check whether the page itself paints a background. An output format of PNG does not by itself remove that background.

The full-page capture stops at the viewport
Set captureBeyondViewport: true and use fromSurface: true without a clip for Chromium’s full-page route. If the result still differs, check the protocol support and behavior of the Chromium build in use.
A later screenshot unexpectedly has a transparent background
The override is stateful. Clear it by calling Emulation.setDefaultBackgroundColorOverride without a color, or restore the target’s previous emulation state.

The command-line capture is opaque
--screenshot documents screenshot output, not a transparency setting. Use CDP or Puppeteer’s omitBackground instead; if testing the headless shell’s background-color flag, confirm it is present in your specific binary.
Results differ on Android
Transparent screenshot test coverage has Android-specific disabled cases and a noted scrollbar issue. Test the exact device and Chromium build rather than assuming desktop behavior carries over.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API supports transparent backgrounds and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For a PNG screenshot, send one GET request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.png
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response headers say which result occurred. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does JPEG support a transparent background?
No. Use PNG for the straightforward alpha-preserving workflow described here; CDP also lists WebP, but verify the WebP workflow you use.
Will the transparent override remove backgrounds painted by the website?
Not necessarily. It overrides Chromium’s default background; an explicit background rendered by the page may remain visible.
