To screenshot a page behind a login with PhantomJS, open the login page, complete the site’s actual authentication flow, verify a site-specific signed-in condition, and only then call page.render. A successful page.open callback means the page loaded; it does not prove that login succeeded. PhantomJS is legacy software, so modern identity-provider, MFA, or CAPTCHA flows may not work reliably.
Choose the authentication method the site actually uses
There are three distinct approaches. Use the one that matches the authorized site; HTTP authentication settings do not submit a normal website login form.

Build the capture around a verified signed-in state

For a normal form, inspect the target site and use its actual selectors and submit behavior with PhantomJS page automation, such as
page.evaluate. The PhantomJS page API documents DOM scripting and evaluation. -
Wait until a site-specific success condition is true—for example, the expected post-login URL or an element visible only to signed-in users. Also check that the login form or an error message is no longer displayed.

The key distinction is between page-load completion and authentication. PhantomJS’s page.open documentation says its optional callback receives the page status, either success or fail, after loading. A successful status is not evidence that the site accepted the credentials.

PhantomJS workflow outline
This JavaScript outline shows where to open the page and check load status. It is not an end-to-end login script: the selectors, login interaction, and authenticated-state check must be written for the authorized target site.

PhantomJS documents page.render output as PNG, JPEG, GIF, or PDF. The viewport determines the browser area; a clipRect can constrain the capture to a rectangle. A viewport capture may omit content outside that area, so select dimensions for the content you need and inspect the resulting file.

Common problems and fixes

The screenshot shows the login page. The form may not have been submitted, the selectors may not match the site, the redirect may still be underway, or the success condition may be too weak. Check the actual form and wait for a signed-in-only element or expected destination before rendering.

The callback reports

The page fails to load. Check the URL and network access, then inspect relevant page settings such as resource timeout. The callback’s
failstatus means the page did not load successfully; it is not a credential diagnosis. -
An existing cookie does not restore the session. Confirm its domain and path match the request and that the server still accepts the session. Cookies are credentials; do not expose them in source control or logs.

The script exits before automation finishes. Keep
phantom.exit()until asynchronous page interaction and the authenticated-state check are complete. -
MFA, an identity provider, or CAPTCHA blocks the flow. PhantomJS uses legacy WebKit and may not support modern protections reliably. Do not try to bypass these checks; use an authorized integration or a current browser automation stack supported by the site.

PhantomJS limitations to account for
PhantomJS is legacy software. A tutorial published September 29, 2026 describes 2.1.1 as the latest release, but that release claim was not independently confirmed against an official release record. Regardless of version, test the specific site’s authentication flow: modern identity-provider pages, MFA prompts, and CAPTCHA can make this approach unsuitable.
