A YouTube stream that drops frames or stalls is not, by itself, proof of packet loss. To find the cause, first verify the ingest URL and protocol, then correlate the stream symptom with Linux host counters and repeated network measurements taken at the same time. MTR or ping can reveal route and latency clues, but loss at an intermediate hop alone does not prove that stream traffic is being dropped.
Identify what is failing and where the stream goes
Write down the exact symptom and its UTC timestamp. A connection that never starts, dropped frames after connection, a stalled output, repeated reconnects, and a warning in YouTube Live Control Room are different observations; do not treat them as interchangeable diagnoses.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMap the publishing path before testing:
- Direct: the encoder on the VPS sends the stream to YouTube.
- Relayed: an encoder sends to an RTMP relay, which then publishes to YouTube. These are two separate network legs, and evidence that one is healthy says nothing conclusive about the other.
Record the encoder’s own dropped-frame, connection, and error indicators, along with any YouTube stream-health observation. Preserve relevant settings, but never include the stream key in logs or support messages.
Verify YouTube ingest configuration before diagnosing the network
Use the current ingest URL provided for the live stream, not a hostname or application path remembered from an earlier setup. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application name, and TLS over port 443. The TLS connection must send the hostname using SNI so the server can authenticate the endpoint.

- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
If connection setup fails with an SSL or TLS error, check the server, port, protocol, and SNI configuration first. Do not send cleartext RTMP to an endpoint that requires RTMPS. A setup or negotiation failure is not evidence of intermittent packet loss.
Capture evidence at the time of the incident
Take a baseline before the next expected incident if possible. During an event, note the UTC time and capture the same observations again; continue briefly after it ends. The useful question is whether independent measurements change at the time the stream misbehaves.

- Network path: repeated ping or MTR output to a relevant hostname or IP address you can test.
- Relay, if present: observations for the encoder-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube legs separately.
A speed test or trace collected hours later may describe different conditions. Correlated evidence is more useful than an isolated average throughput result.
Check Linux interface and network-stack counters
Linux can drop packets at more than one point, including the network interface’s RX/TX rings, kernel networking, and socket or application buffers. Red Hat’s RHEL 10 network troubleshooting and performance tuning documentation describes these layers and counters such as UDP socket drops.

Inspect the interface and stack counters available on your distribution and VPS. Compare values before, during, and after the symptom. A lifetime counter that is nonzero does not establish that drops caused this particular stream problem; an increase that coincides with the incident is a stronger lead to investigate, not automatic proof of root cause.
If counters rise with the stream symptom, check host load, virtual NIC or provider-side interface statistics, and workload contention. Do not begin by changing ring-buffer or kernel tuning values: changing ring settings can briefly interrupt connectivity on some drivers.

Use ping and MTR as route clues, not verdicts
Ping provides basic latency and response observations. MTR combines route and latency reporting over repeated probes. Run measurements repeatedly against relevant hostnames or IPs you can test, particularly during the incident, and compare the destination’s behavior with intermediate hops.
An intermediate router may rate-limit or deprioritize probe replies while continuing to forward traffic. Therefore, a loss percentage shown at one hop does not alone establish end-to-end packet loss. If later hops and the application remain healthy while only an intermediate hop reports loss, do not label that router the cause. Top.host gives Linux examples such as mtr --report-cycles=20 IPADDRESS; its “first hop with loss” heuristic is not universal proof that forwarded stream packets are being dropped. See its packet-loss measurement guide.

Use iperf3 only to test the endpoints you control
iperf3 measures between its own test endpoints. Unless YouTube provides a test endpoint for this purpose, an iperf3 result is not a measurement of the YouTube ingest path. A test to another provider, region, or server can help assess a controlled path or available capacity, but it does not prove the different YouTube route is healthy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft’s Linux VM troubleshooting guide demonstrates starting an iperf3 server with iperf3 -s and connecting a client to it. For a UDP check, choose a bitrate and payload size that resemble the workload, then increase cautiously rather than saturating the path immediately. UDP tests also use TCP control and UDP data sockets. Red Hat cautions that utility results may differ from production application behavior under its workload; as it explains, “The throughput of applications depends on many factors, such as the buffer sizes that the application uses.”
Interpret the evidence by pattern
| What you observe | What it supports | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Interface or kernel drop/error counters increase during the stream symptom | A host-side or virtual-network issue is plausible; the timing is a useful correlation, not proof by itself. | Check host processing load, provider virtual NIC counters, and workload contention; share timestamps with the VPS provider if needed. |
| Only intermediate MTR hops show loss, while later hops and the stream appear healthy | Probe replies may be rate-limited or deprioritized; end-to-end loss is not established. | Do not diagnose the intermediate router from that display alone. Compare destination and application observations. |
| A controlled iperf3 path is stable, but the YouTube-bound stream still falters | The tested path differs from the YouTube path, so the result neither implicates nor clears YouTube. | Correlate ingest and route observations and ask the VPS provider to investigate egress or routing with incident timestamps. |
| RTMPS connection setup or TLS negotiation fails | Endpoint or protocol configuration is a more immediate issue than intermittent packet loss. | Recheck the current ingest URL, port 443, TLS, and SNI. |
| A relay is in use | The two publishing legs can fail independently. | Measure encoder-to-relay and relay-to-YouTube separately; a healthy first leg does not verify the second. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel rather than diagnose a live encoder’s VPS path, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud.
- Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
