If Google Search traffic falls, confirm the decline in Search Console and identify which clicks, impressions, pages, queries, or search types changed before editing the site. A traffic drop can reflect measurement differences, lower search demand, crawling or indexing problems, enforcement, a migration, or ranking changes; the symptom alone does not reveal the cause. Google’s traffic-drop guidance recommends investigating the scope and evidence first, and cautions that changes do not guarantee a visible improvement.
Confirm the drop in Search Console
Start with the Performance report in Google Search Console. Compare the affected period with an equivalent earlier period—for example, the same weekdays or season where possible—and check clicks, impressions, and average position. These metrics describe different things: fewer clicks with similar impressions may point to a change in position or click-through behavior, while fewer impressions can indicate reduced demand, visibility, or both. Average position is an aggregate measure, so do not treat a small movement by itself as proof of a meaningful loss. Google says clicks and impressions are generally more useful measures of search success than focusing too heavily on absolute average position.

Before diagnosing the site, check that you are looking at the right Search Console property. Its protocol and hostname should match the site URL you intend to measure; a property that covers a different host or protocol can make traffic seem absent. Google’s Search Console traffic-drop help page also recommends checking the reporting context before acting.

Find which searches and pages lost visibility
Break the comparison down rather than relying on the site-wide total. In Performance, use the Search type filter to inspect Web, Image, Video, and News results separately, then compare the Pages and Queries tables. Also check country and device. Sorting pages by click difference can reveal whether the decline is broad, concentrated in one URL, or shared by a group of similar pages.

- Site-wide loss: Investigate shared technical changes, broad demand shifts, security or enforcement notices, and changes affecting the whole property.
- Page-group loss: Look for a common template, directory, topic, or deployment affecting those URLs.
- One or a few URLs: Inspect those pages directly and compare their crawl, indexing, and content status.
These patterns narrow the investigation but do not prove a cause. Compare the change in clicks, impressions, and position with the affected search types, query demand, dates of deployments or URL changes, and the crawl and index status of representative pages.
Check whether Google can crawl and index affected pages
For broad declines, review site-level reports
If many pages lost visibility, check Search Console’s Page indexing and Crawl stats reports for new errors or changes in crawl activity. Compare the timing with deployments, template edits, hosting changes, or changes to robots.txt. A technical block may not show up as a traffic loss until Google revisits and processes the affected pages.

For specific URLs, use URL Inspection
Inspect representative affected URLs in Search Console. Check whether Google can access the page and whether it is indexed. Review the live page for robots.txt restrictions, a noindex directive, not-found or other error responses, and recent changes that may have altered the page or its links. Search Console’s crawl history can help establish whether Google has revisited the site; a page may remain in results temporarily after a change until a later recrawl.

Check Search Console’s Manual Actions and Security Issues reports, especially if the site or important pages have disappeared from results. Google says spam-policy violations can lead to lower rankings or no appearance in Search, and a manual action may follow human review. If either report identifies a problem, follow the remediation instructions shown there. A clean Manual Actions report does not establish that an algorithmic change caused the decline.

Also check whether a successful URL removal request is affecting the pages in question. If a page is missing from results for reasons you cannot identify, Google’s guide to pages missing from Google Search provides additional checks.
Separate changing demand from site-specific performance
For queries that lost clicks or impressions, compare broader interest in Google Trends. A decline in demand across the web may explain fewer impressions even if the site’s relative visibility has not changed. Consider weekly and seasonal patterns as well as changes in the mix of queries people use.

Compare the timing with Google ranking updates and reported data anomalies, but treat a date match as a lead to investigate, not proof of causation. Rankings can fluctuate naturally, including after a small shift near the top of results. Google advises against radical edits to pages that are already performing well. If a large, persistent decline spans many terms, review affected pages and the site overall for helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than making speculative changes across the board.
Investigate a migration if URLs changed
If the site changed hostname, protocol, or URL paths, verify the new URLs and redirects against Google’s site-move guidance. Confirm that old URLs lead to the intended new pages and that the new pages can be crawled and indexed. Rankings may fluctuate while Google recrawls and reindexes. Google says it may take a few weeks for it to notice a move on a medium-sized site; larger sites can take longer. This is guidance, not a deadline or a guarantee of restored traffic.

Make changes only when evidence supports them
Match the fix to the confirmed issue: correct crawl or indexing blocks, follow the instructions for security or spam problems, and repair migration or redirect errors. For ranking or content concerns, improve the affected pages for readers instead of applying broad, unverified edits. Record what changed and when, then compare the same Search Console metrics and segments after Google has had time to process the work.
Google says some effects may appear within days, while others can take several months to be reflected; in relevant cases it recommends waiting a few weeks before evaluating changes in Search Console. The time depends on the issue and how quickly Google recrawls and reassesses pages. As Google Search Central puts it, “There is no guarantee that changes you make will result in noticeable impact in search results.”
