Start with the kind of puzzle you want to solve
Think about the mental loop you find satisfying, rather than relying on a genre label. Some games ask you to notice a visual rule and apply it in new variations; others center on moving objects or changing spaces, or on interpreting clues and reconstructing events.

- Visual rules: Choose this approach if you like spotting a pattern, testing an idea, and seeing how it applies to a new puzzle. The Witness is a useful example of idea-centered puzzle design. In a 2016 TIME interview, its creator Jonathan Blow said of the game’s panels, “they’re about ideas. They’re not just a thing you solve.” Read the TIME interview.
- Objects and spaces: Look for games whose central appeal is manipulating the environment or reasoning about space. Steam describes COCOON as a puzzle adventure in which each world exists within an orb that can be carried, making nested worlds central to its premise. See COCOON on Steam.
- Clues and mysteries: If you enjoy interpreting evidence and gradually assembling a larger picture, prioritize games that make mystery and discovery part of the experience. Outer Wilds is one example: in a developer playtest update, Mobius Digital discussed its story, writing, and solar-system mysteries. Read Mobius Digital’s updates.
Decide how much direction you want
Exploration can make finding a route feel rewarding, but an open world may also leave you unsure where to go next. If you prefer a clear sequence of objectives, look for descriptions or previews that emphasize a more guided progression. If finding your own route is part of the fun, an open-ended setting may suit you better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Witness is an example of the exploration-led side: its Steam listing describes a single-player open-world game with dozens of locations and more than 500 puzzles. Those are advertised features, not a judgment about how difficult or enjoyable the game will be for you. See The Witness on Steam.

Match the story to your preferences
Consider whether you want an explicit story to follow, a mystery to interpret, or a game that communicates mainly through its environment and puzzle ideas. A story-rich mystery can reward close attention to clues and context; a less explicit approach may leave more room for interpreting what the world is saying. Store descriptions can help set expectations, but they do not establish how much story any particular player will want.
Separate puzzle challenge from uncertainty
A demanding puzzle and a confusing sense of what to do next are different kinds of friction. Before choosing, ask yourself which one you enjoy: working hard to infer a solution, exploring until a new lead appears, or having objectives that clearly point toward the next step.
Rank #2
There is no common difficulty scale here that makes it possible to rank The Witness, COCOON, and Outer Wilds objectively. The available official descriptions and developer comments identify their premises and themes, not a comparable measure of difficulty. Treat “challenging” language as a signal to investigate further, not as a precise rating.
