For movies, reduce motion smoothing if it makes movement look unnaturally slick. Use Game Mode when gaming responsiveness matters. Make these adjustments while the content you care about is playing: picture settings can differ between HDR and SDR, inputs, and built-in apps.
Which settings should you change first?
Change the picture mode first, then make a few practical adjustments. Avoid copying a set of slider numbers from another TV: labels, controls, and results vary by brand and model.

1. Choose an accurate picture mode
For supported films and TV, try Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it. Otherwise, start with Movie or Cinema, or the manufacturer’s closest accuracy-focused mode. These are generally better starting points for an image that does not look excessively processed than a bright Standard mode, though no mode is guaranteed to be perfect on every television. RTINGS describes Filmmaker Mode as a useful starting point that disables extra picture and motion processing; TCL says it presents supported content closer to the creator’s intended style. Sony notes that available picture options depend on the model. RTINGS’ TV calibration guide, TCL’s Google TV settings guide, and Sony’s picture-settings support page explain the variation.
2. Set screen light for the room
Adjust the control that changes the TV’s light output—often called Backlight or a similar term—until the picture is comfortable and visible in your actual viewing conditions. A bright room or reflections may call for more light; a dim room may be more comfortable with less. There is no universal slider number because the room, reflections, TV capability, and personal preference all matter. Samsung distinguishes screen light output from other picture adjustments in its picture-settings guide; LG also publishes settings examples for its own TVs and conditions, not as targets for every brand: LG’s picture settings guidance.

3. Try a warm color temperature
For a natural-looking film image, try Warm or the closest equivalent. RTINGS says warm is closest to the 6500 K reference used by professional calibrators. If you are used to a cooler default, it may initially look yellowish; choose a setting that remains comfortable to watch. Some Samsung TVs label warmer options Warm1 and Warm2, but labels vary by model. See RTINGS’ calibration guide and Samsung’s picture-settings guide.
4. Reduce motion smoothing for movies if needed
Motion smoothing interpolates frames to make movement appear smoother. If films look like live video or soap operas, turn the feature off or reduce it. Movies are commonly filmed at 24 frames per second, and interpolation can make their motion look unnaturally smooth. For sports or other fast-moving live content, you may prefer a modest custom setting. Samsung describes these trade-offs in its guide to motion smoothing and the soap-opera effect.

5. Check picture size and screen fit
Look for a setting such as Fit to Screen, Screen Fit, or an equivalent full-image option, and use it when the picture is cropped. Overscan enlarges the image and can cut off edges; a fit-to-screen option displays the full image. The exact label depends on the TV. See Samsung’s picture-settings guide and TCL’s settings guide.

For console gaming, Game Mode can reduce processing delay and prioritize responsiveness. Samsung notes that it may slightly reduce graphics quality and that support varies by model. Compare it with your regular picture mode using a game you play often; the right balance depends on whether responsiveness or the regular mode’s processing matters more to you. Samsung’s picture-settings guide describes the feature.

Why settings may change between content and devices
HDR and SDR can have separate adjustments
A setting made while watching SDR content may not carry over to HDR, or vice versa. Check the picture while the relevant HDR or SDR content is playing instead of assuming one set of changes applies to both. RTINGS discusses this behavior in its TV calibration guide.
Inputs and apps may have separate picture memories
Your TV may store settings separately for different HDMI inputs and built-in apps. RTINGS says settings often need to be adjusted per input, and native apps may be treated separately. TCL notes that some models offer a choice to apply settings to the current input or all inputs. After adjusting the picture, check the devices and apps you actually use; consult the TV’s manual for its available options. See RTINGS’ guide and TCL’s settings guide.

Which settings should you leave alone at first?
Keep advanced controls at their defaults unless you can identify a specific problem or have model-specific guidance. Dynamic contrast, tone mapping, noise reduction, local contrast or dimming, color space, and white balance can all change how the image is processed, and their labels and effects differ across TVs. More sharpness is not automatically more detail: sharpness is a processing control, and a universal numeric target is not established. Sony describes it as a picture-detail adjustment, while TCL groups it among clarity settings. Their guides are Sony’s picture-settings page and TCL’s Google TV settings guide.

How to choose between the main picture options
| Choice | What it prioritizes | When it may suit you | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filmmaker, Movie, or Cinema | Film-like presentation and fewer extra processing effects | Films and TV when you want a more accurate starting point | May look less bright than Standard, and no preset is perfect for every TV or room |
| Standard or a brighter mode | A brighter or more vivid presentation | Bright rooms or viewers who prefer that look | May look less natural for films than an accuracy-focused mode |
| Motion smoothing off | Film-like motion without frame interpolation | Movies where smoothing creates a soap-opera effect | Motion may look less smooth than with interpolation |
| Low or custom motion smoothing | A compromise between smoothness and a film-like appearance | Sports or fast-moving content if you prefer added smoothness | Results depend on the content and your preference |
| Game Mode | Responsiveness and lower processing delay | Console gaming when response matters | Some processing or graphics quality may be reduced; model support varies |
