Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPhotoshop errors do not all have the same cause. If the app crashes, freezes, lags, shows a graphics warning, or reports a full scratch disk, start with the exact symptom, check Adobe’s known issues, and test likely causes one at a time. The sequence below applies to Photoshop desktop on Windows and macOS.
Start by identifying the failure
Write down the exact error text and when it appears. Note whether the problem affects one document or every document, and whether it began after an app or operating-system update or a change to a graphics driver, plug-in, font, connected device, or preference. These clues help distinguish a file-specific problem from an app, system, or storage issue.

- Check Adobe’s known issues in Photoshop for a reported problem that matches your symptoms.
- Close Photoshop and restart the computer, then reopen the same document or repeat the same action.
- Check for a Photoshop update in the Creative Cloud desktop app and install one if available.
- Change only one setting or variable at a time, then repeat the same test. If several changes are made at once, it becomes harder to identify what helped.
Adobe lists outdated software, damaged preferences, graphics processor or driver trouble, plug-ins, fonts, security software, and system permissions among possible causes of crashes or freezes. An error message by itself does not establish which one is responsible. See Adobe’s crash and freeze troubleshooting and Photoshop crashes, lags, or freezes guidance.
If Photoshop crashes or freezes on startup
Test without optional plug-ins
Hold Shift while launching Photoshop. If prompted, choose the option to skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins. If Photoshop then starts normally, a plug-in may be involved. Re-enable or add plug-ins individually and relaunch after each change to identify the one associated with the failure.

Reset preferences only after simpler checks
Preference reset restores Photoshop’s defaults. Back up settings you want to keep before proceeding. Close Photoshop, then launch it while holding Alt+Ctrl+Shift on Windows or Option+Command+Shift on macOS. Accept the prompt to delete the Photoshop settings file. Reconfigure preferences as needed and test before making additional changes. Adobe documents this method in its startup crash guidance.
If Photoshop says the scratch disk is full or low
Messages such as “Scratch disk full,” “Scratch Disk Low,” “Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full,” and “Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full” indicate that Photoshop is short of temporary storage on a selected drive. Adobe’s scratch-disk troubleshooting article, updated February 23, 2026, says to free at least 100 GB on the primary scratch-disk drive. That is Adobe’s recommendation, not a guarantee that the warning will disappear in every setup.

- Built for Photoshop users who want to edit faster: Photoshop's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you work.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
- Check the free space on the drive Photoshop uses as its primary scratch disk. Remove or move files only if you can do so safely, then empty the system trash or recycle bin if needed.
- In Photoshop, open Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks on Windows or Photoshop > Settings > Scratch Disks on macOS. The precise wording can vary by release. Select another drive with ample free space if one is available, then restart Photoshop.
- If the warning occurs during demanding work, consider reducing History States in Preferences/Settings > Performance. Fewer saved history steps can reduce temporary-storage demands, but also limit how far back you can undo.
Adobe explains that Photoshop uses scratch disks as temporary memory when system RAM is low and recommends a drive with ample free space, ideally an internal SSD. Its scratch-disk guidance lists APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for macOS, and NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32 for Windows. Confirm that a drive’s format and connection work with your operating system and Photoshop version before relying on it.

If Photoshop lags, redraws slowly, or shows graphics problems
GPU-related symptoms can include slow or lagging tools, flicker or visual artifacts, missing interface elements, slow redraw, or crashes when using particular features. Test the graphics processor before assuming the GPU or driver is defective.
- Open Edit > Preferences > Performance on Windows or Photoshop > Settings > Performance on macOS.
- Temporarily deselect Use Graphics Processor, restart Photoshop, and repeat the action that triggered the problem.
- If the issue clears, check the computer or GPU maker’s site for a driver intended for the exact graphics processor and operating system. Install an appropriate update, re-enable the graphics processor, restart, and test again.
If disabling the GPU changes nothing, restore the setting and investigate another cause. Leaving GPU acceleration off can disable or affect features that depend on it, including Oil Paint, Perspective Warp, Smooth Brush Resizing, and some 3D functionality. Adobe’s GPU and graphics-driver troubleshooting explains the diagnostic steps and feature limitations. Updating a driver may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every adapter or configuration.

Check memory allocation
In Edit > Preferences > Performance on Windows or Photoshop > Settings > Performance on macOS, review the memory allocation setting. Adobe’s performance guidance, updated October 4, 2026, says Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM by default and advises not allocating more than 85%, so memory remains available to the operating system and other apps. Adobe recommends changing the allocation in 5% increments; these are Adobe’s guidelines, not a universal performance guarantee. Details are in Configure performance preferences in Photoshop on desktop.

Match cache settings to the work
Cache settings affect how Photoshop handles document data and screen redraw. Adjust them only when you have a specific performance reason, then test the same file and actions. A setting that helps with one kind of document or workflow may not help another; Adobe describes the relevant controls in its performance preferences documentation.
Collect diagnostic details if the problem continues
Before contacting support or investigating a persistent issue, capture Photoshop’s system report. Choose Help > System Info and copy the report into a text editor. Adobe’s system information troubleshooting page explains how to use it.
Useful report details include the graphics-card vendor and renderer, video memory, memory used by Photoshop, scratch-volume size and free space, plug-in paths, and any plug-ins that failed to load. Adobe also recommends sharing system information and crash logs for persistent crashes; see its basic troubleshooting steps.

Use the test result to choose the next step
- Only one document triggers the issue: repeat the test with another document and note what is distinctive about the affected file before changing global preferences.
- The problem began after an update or settings change: check known issues and test the changed component or setting first.
- Photoshop starts when plug-ins are skipped: isolate optional plug-ins individually.
- The issue clears with the GPU disabled: investigate the driver and graphics configuration, then re-enable acceleration to check whether the fix holds.
- A scratch-disk warning appears: address free space and the selected scratch volume before changing unrelated performance settings.
- No test isolates the cause: provide Adobe support with the exact error, reproduction steps, system report, and crash logs if available.
