How scheduled screenshot checks detect changes
A visual check compares a new screenshot with an accepted reference image. Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions: the first run can create the reference, and later runs compare against it. The baseline files belong in your project so changes to the expected appearance can be reviewed alongside code changes. See Playwright: Visual comparisons.

This detects rendered visual differences, not every kind of change. A page can change its text or behavior without producing a meaningful pixel difference, and a visual diff may result from the capture environment rather than a site update.
Build a Chromium screenshot test
Install Playwright Test
In a Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its Chromium browser:

});Replace the example URL with the page you want to monitor. Run the test once:
npx playwright testOn its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Review the image and commit it with the test. Later runs compare the rendered page with that reference; a mismatch fails the test and produces comparison output. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to be identical before comparing them, which helps avoid capturing during an unstable render. See Playwright PageAssertions.
Choose the capture area
- Visible viewport: omit
fullPageto focus on what a visitor sees without scrolling. - Entire page: set
fullPage: trueto include the full scrollable document. This can expose lazy-loaded content and makes long pages more sensitive to changes below the fold. - One element: use a locator screenshot assertion when a particular component matters more than the whole page, for example

Make captures stable without hiding real changes
Chromium screenshots are not automatically identical across machines. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Create baselines and run scheduled comparisons in the same controlled environment, with a stable viewport and managed browser version. Avoid generating a baseline on one operating system and comparing it on another.

Wait for meaningful content
Wait for the page and any important client-rendered content before asserting the screenshot. networkidle is used in the example, but it may not be appropriate for pages that keep requests open. In that case, wait for a meaningful element instead:

Animation suppression, masks, and screenshot comparison tolerances are also available. Use these controls selectively: masking a rotating ad or timestamp may reduce irrelevant noise, but masking the component you intend to monitor defeats the check. Schedule the check with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions workflows can run on a recurring POSIX cron schedule. Scheduled workflows run from the repository’s default branch. GitHub documents a shortest interval of five minutes, but schedule times are not a real-time guarantee: high load can delay runs, especially near the start of an hour, and queued runs may be dropped under sufficient load. if-no-files-found: ignoreThe cron expression above requests a run at minute 17 every six hours. Pick an interval that suits how quickly you need to notice a change, and avoid scheduling exactly at the top of the hour when possible. Keep the runner and browser setup stable between baseline creation and scheduled runs; if you create snapshots locally, use an environment matching CI as closely as practical.

Configure failure notifications through the channel your team uses, and choose how long to retain screenshots and diffs based on how far back you need to investigate. The workflow’s artifact step makes available files uploadable when present; your retention and alerting policy remain implementation choices.
Review diffs and maintain the baseline
When a check fails, inspect the actual screenshot and comparison output before accepting a new reference. Determine whether the difference is an expected site update, a rendering-environment change, or capture noise. Update snapshots only after deciding the new appearance is correct:

npx playwright test --update-snapshotsReview the resulting image changes and commit them deliberately. Blindly updating snapshots after every failure converts the current page into the expected state without establishing whether the change was wanted.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Snapshots differ on every run: check that scheduled and baseline captures use the same OS, Chromium version, viewport, and headless settings. Wait for dynamic content and consider disabling animation or excluding only genuinely irrelevant volatile regions.
- The assertion captures too early: wait for a selector that appears only after the required content is rendered. For pages with persistent network connections, replace
networkidlewith a targeted element wait. - The full-page image misses content: lazy-loaded sections may not render until scrolled into view. Consider a deliberate scroll/load strategy or monitor a specific element instead of assuming the initial viewport has loaded every section.
- CI cannot launch Chromium: install the browser and its operating-system dependencies in the workflow with
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium, and use Playwright’s CI guidance to diagnose environment setup. - Every scheduled run appears to be skipped or late: confirm the workflow is on the repository’s default branch and remember GitHub’s documented scheduling delays and queue limitations. Use manual dispatch to check the workflow independently of its cron trigger.
- A failed comparison is actually an intended redesign: inspect the diff, then update the reference using the snapshot-update command and commit the reviewed change.
When a hosted visual-review service may fit
Self-managed Playwright gives you control over the test code and capture environment, but your team owns browser maintenance, baseline storage, diff review, scheduling, and artifact handling.
