You can turn on YouTube’s live automatic captions for an individual stream in YouTube Studio, but the built-in live captions are currently English-only, may not be available to every channel, and require normal latency. To provide other languages, use a caption feed or a separate translation workflow; YouTube Studio does not offer a universal switch that publishes translated captions for every live stream. Viewers can also use private browser-side translation tools, which do not add captions to the stream itself.
Choose the kind of captions you need
“Live captions” can mean different things: selectable closed captions supplied alongside the video, text burned into the picture, or subtitles displayed privately in a viewer’s browser. The right method depends on who needs to control the captions, which languages are needed, and whether the captions must remain available after the broadcast.

| Method | Who sets it up | What viewers see | Language and stream considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube automatic live captions | Creator, per stream | YouTube caption display during the live stream | English only; feature rollout and latency restrictions apply |
| Creator-supplied caption feed | Creator or captioning operator | A caption track delivered with the stream | Can support professional caption workflows; YouTube’s documented embedded workflow currently supports one caption track |
| Translation through a streaming API | Developer or stream-service operator | Generated captions and translations in an HLS or DASH stream | Requires API configuration; supported translation locations and languages are limited |
| Burned-in translated text | Creator, using an overlay or encoder | Text is part of the video picture | Viewers cannot turn it off or style it like a caption track |
| Browser-side translation | Individual viewer | Personal subtitles over the open browser tab | Does not change the creator’s stream or provide captions in native YouTube apps, according to the tool vendor |
Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions
YouTube documents this feature in its Help page “Use automatic captioning”. YouTube says, “Automatic captions for live streams are available in English only.” Availability is still rolling out, so the option may not appear for every channel.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Open the settings for the specific live stream. Captions are enabled per stream, not through one channel-wide captions switch.
- Turn on Closed captions, choose Automatic captions as the source, and set the video language to English.
- Use normal latency for the documented native automatic-caption workflow. YouTube lists low and ultra-low latency as availability limitations.
- Preview the stream and check captions for names, numbers, and other important information before relying on them.
Labels can change as YouTube updates Studio. If the option is missing, check the stream’s latency and channel eligibility; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions that rollout eligibility may be a factor for channels with 1,000 or fewer subscribers, rather than stating a permanent universal threshold.

What happens when the stream ends
Live automatic captions do not simply carry over as the same captions on the replay. YouTube Help states: “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” YouTube creates a new caption track for the video-on-demand version, and that track may differ from the live captions.
Why automatic captions may be wrong or absent
YouTube identifies poor audio, speech the system cannot recognize, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages spoken at once as reasons automatic captions can fail or become inaccurate. Improve the source audio where practical, avoid people speaking over each other, and review critical details. A microphone can help when input audio is poor, but it cannot guarantee correct recognition.

Provide captions with a caption feed
For accessibility requirements, greater control, or a non-English caption track, creators can supply captions instead of relying on YouTube’s English-only automatic live captions. YouTube’s “Live caption requirements” describes embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and supported software that sends captions over HTTP.

- Create or open the event in YouTube’s live workflow and enable Closed captions.
- Choose the caption delivery method supported by your encoder or captioning application: embedded 608/708 captions or software sending captions over HTTP.
- For the event caption workflow, use the signed caption-ingestion URL provided by YouTube where applicable, and configure the caption software to send its feed to that destination.
- Allow for the 30- or 60-second broadcast delay specified in YouTube’s event instructions.
- Configure one caption feed per stream entry point, then test the output before the event.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, Caption Maker, and StreamText.Net among software options. The 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube says its documented embedded workflow currently supports only one caption track. Do not assume that the standard’s theoretical capacity means YouTube will accept four tracks in this workflow.

How to handle translated captions
Creator-published translations
YouTube’s ordinary live-stream caption documentation describes English automatic captions; it does not document a general Studio setting that automatically publishes translated caption tracks for any live stream. YouTube’s per-viewer automatic translation options for some video caption tracks should not be treated as a guaranteed live translation feature.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation describes generated captions and translations for HLS and DASH streams. This is a developer/configuration route, not a toggle in YouTube Studio. The documentation says AI-generated translation is supported in the locations us-west1 and europe-west1; language availability also depends on location.

Translated text burned into the broadcast
A creator can add translated text as an on-screen overlay. StreamTranslate, for example, advertises an OBS browser-source overlay and says its captions are baked into the video. That makes the text visible in the picture, rather than a selectable closed-caption track: viewers cannot turn it off or restyle it through YouTube’s caption controls. Its claims about accuracy, latency, and language coverage are vendor claims, not independently established measurements.

Some browser extensions listen to audio from the open tab and draw translated subtitles for the person watching. Trippi describes this kind of Chrome extension and says it does not work in YouTube’s native apps. It is a personal viewing aid: it does not add captions to the creator’s stream, and other viewers do not receive the same subtitles. These capability and compatibility details are the vendor’s statements.

Pick a workflow by need
- English captions, simplest setup: Try YouTube’s automatic live captions if the stream has normal latency and the feature is available to the channel.
- Reliability or professional accessibility: Use a captioning application or embedded captions, test the feed, and arrange a human captioner if the event’s needs require correction beyond automatic recognition.
- Translated captions controlled by the creator: Choose a translation-capable streaming/API workflow or an overlay, and be clear whether the result is a caption track or text embedded in the picture.
- One viewer wants another language: A browser-side tool may provide private subtitles, subject to the vendor’s compatibility limits.
- Captions on the replay matter: Check the VOD caption track after the stream and correct it as needed; do not expect the live automatic captions to persist unchanged.
Troubleshoot missing or poor captions
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic caption option is missing | Feature rollout, stream configuration, or latency mode | Check the individual stream’s Closed captions settings, use normal latency, and review YouTube’s current eligibility guidance. |
| No live automatic captions appear | Feature not available to the channel, unsupported configuration, or audio recognition issue | Confirm English is selected, verify the stream is not using low or ultra-low latency, and test the audio. |
| Words are inaccurate or disappear | Poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, or simultaneous languages | Improve audio clarity, reduce overlap, and review important information rather than assuming transcription is exact. |
| Captions are absent from the replay | Live captions are not retained as the same VOD track | Check the VOD’s newly created caption track and edit or provide captions for the replay if needed. |
| External captions do not arrive | Incorrect signed ingestion URL, feed routing, or event delay configuration | Verify the caption software’s destination, the one-feed-per-entry-point setup, and the event’s 30- or 60-second delay instructions. |
| Translated overlay is not selectable | Text is burned into the video picture | That is expected for a baked-in overlay; use a caption-track workflow if viewers must control caption visibility or styling. |
