To spot a client’s website or email problem early, monitor it from outside the client’s network, test the workflows that matter—not just whether a page responds—and send verified alerts to someone responsible for acting on them. For email, pair DNS authentication checks with provider-specific delivery signals; no single dashboard proves that every message reaches every inbox.
What to monitor: availability, behavior and email signals
A basic uptime check tells you whether a monitored endpoint responded to a probe under that monitor’s test conditions. It cannot, by itself, tell you whether a visitor can complete a purchase, submit a lead form or use an account. A site may return a successful response while displaying an error or missing essential content.

Build checks around what each client’s property is supposed to do. Pingdom documents uptime, page-speed, transaction and API monitoring, while GoodPing describes content or keyword checks intended to catch failures that a status code can miss: Pingdom and GoodPing.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Availability: Can an external monitor reach the public website, API or other endpoint?
- Content: Does the response contain expected text or page elements, rather than an error page with a nominally successful status?
- Critical journeys: Can a visitor complete the essential action, such as signing in, checking out or submitting a form?
- Performance: Is a key page or journey becoming slow enough to affect the client’s needs?
Build a monitoring plan for each client
1. Inventory properties and business-critical paths
List each client’s public sites and APIs, then identify the few pages and workflows whose failure would matter most. Include scheduled jobs where a missed run would cause a meaningful problem. Record who receives each alert and who owns client communication. This is an operational recommendation, not a universal inventory template prescribed by monitoring vendors.

2. Check public availability and meaningful behavior
Begin with external HTTP or HTTPS checks for public sites and APIs. Add expected-content assertions for pages that can appear reachable while serving an error or omitting important content. Use synthetic transactions for essential workflows such as login or checkout, and performance checks where speed is a client concern. Pingdom documents uptime, page-speed, transaction and API monitoring: Pingdom.
Read uptime figures as summaries of the checks, scope and measurement window used by that provider—not as a complete rating of site quality. Before comparing reports or vendors, check where probes run, how often they run, what is monitored, how a failure is confirmed and what time period the report covers. The available product documentation does not establish a neutral, independently audited comparison of monitoring accuracy.

3. Add checks for architecture-specific risks
Select additional checks according to the consequences of failure for that site. Common candidates include TLS certificate and domain expiry, DNS changes, broken links, performance degradation and cron or heartbeat monitoring. A marketing site, store and API-backed application do not need identical coverage. Oh Dear describes these health-check categories and client reports; Montastic describes uptime, SSL, DNS and network checks: Oh Dear and Montastic.

For domains that send mail, verify that DNS identifies authorized senders and supports authentication. Google recommends SPF, DKIM and DMARC setup in its Email sender guidelines. As stated in Google’s guidance accessed in 2026, all senders to Gmail must use SPF or DKIM; senders sending more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail have additional SPF, DKIM and DMARC requirements. Google advises keeping the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.10% and avoiding 0.30% or higher. These are Gmail-specific requirements and recommendations, not universal thresholds for every mailbox provider, and guidance can change.

Google Postmaster Tools provides dashboards for authentication, spam rate, domain and IP reputation, and delivery errors for outgoing mail to personal Gmail accounts. Google says the dashboard data is not real-time and may be absent on low-volume days: Postmaster Tools dashboard documentation. Treat it as one provider-specific signal, not a real-time measure of inbox placement across all email services. Google also states that it does not track open rates in its sender guidance; that statement concerns Google’s own tracking and does not establish what third parties may track.
Route alerts so someone can act
A monitor only helps if its notification reaches a person who can investigate. Choose channels based on the client’s support arrangement and the agency’s response workflow. Vendor documentation describes options including email, SMS, Slack, webhooks or incident tools, as well as recovery notifications, escalation delays and maintenance windows. For example, Pingdom documents email and SMS alerts; Cronitor documents alert routing and failure confirmation from another region before alerting; Oh Dear describes client-specific status pages and automated monthly reports. These are vendor-documented features, not a guarantee that all monitoring tools work the same way.

Compare tools by coverage and workflow, not rankings
Product pages establish that tools document particular features; they do not support a definitive ranking or an independent verdict on reliability. Compare the capabilities that matter for the client’s sites and response process:
- Coverage: HTTP/HTTPS uptime, content assertions, synthetic journeys, APIs, DNS, SSL or domain expiry, cron or heartbeat, and email signals.
- Detection: Check interval, test locations and whether a failed probe is confirmed before an alert is sent.
- Response workflow: Notification channels, escalation, recovery alerts, maintenance windows and alert ownership.
- Client communication: Status-page access, incident subscriptions, history, branded reports and permissions.
- Evidence and limits: What is measured, over what reporting window, how quickly data appears, and which provider-specific blind spots apply.
For documented examples, Pingdom lists uptime, page-speed, transaction and API checks with public status pages; Cronitor describes multi-region failure confirmation, alert routes, status pages and email reports; and Oh Dear describes broader site-health checks and monthly client reports. Which, if any, fits depends on the checks and client-response workflow required.
