Use toLocaleDateString() with the en-GB locale and explicit day, month, and year options to format a JavaScript Date as DD/MM/YYYY. For example, a date rendered as 4 October 2026 becomes 04/10/2026. The timezone used to render the date determines which calendar day appears.
Format a Date as DD/MM/YYYY
TypeScript uses JavaScript’s built-in date and internationalization APIs. Set the locale to en-GB for day/month/year ordering, then request two-digit day and month fields and a numeric year:

const date = new Date();
const formatted = date.toLocaleDateString("en-GB", {
day: "2-digit",
month: "2-digit",
year: "numeric",
});
console.log(formatted); // e.g. "04/10/2026"
The example produces a localized date string; the exact date depends on the instant in date and the timezone used to format it. MDN’s toLocaleDateString() reference documents these options and shows en-GB producing day/month/year order.
Choose the timezone deliberately
JavaScript Date represents an instant, not a timezone-free calendar date. By default, toLocaleDateString() renders that instant in the machine’s local timezone, so an instant near midnight can appear on different calendar days in different zones.
#1 Best Overall
If the intended calendar date is UTC, set timeZone explicitly:
const utcFormatter = new Intl.DateTimeFormat("en-GB", {
day: "2-digit",
month: "2-digit",
year: "numeric",
timeZone: "UTC",
});
const formattedUtc = utcFormatter.format(date);
Use the timezone that matches the meaning of the value. UTC is not necessarily right for a locally defined appointment or date of birth. See MDN’s timezone and locale-formatting guidance.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

Reuse a formatter for repeated dates
If the application formats many dates with the same settings, create one Intl.DateTimeFormat instance and reuse it rather than calling toLocaleDateString() with identical arguments each time. MDN notes that repeated calls perform localization-data lookups and recommends considering a formatter instance for this case.

When locale formatting is not an exact-string contract
For ordinary display, the locale formatter is the appropriate built-in option. But localized output can vary between implementations, including whitespace or bidirectional control characters. Do not compare it to a hardcoded string when an exact machine format or exact-string comparison is required. The MDN reference advises against relying on a specific localized output string for such comparisons.
Also avoid omitting the locale when the required order is fixed: the host’s default locale may use a different order, such as month/day/year. The explicit en-GB locale and 2-digit options provide the requested ordering and leading zeroes for display.
Handle invalid Date values intentionally
This formatting pattern does not define how an application should parse or validate input. If a value may be invalid, check it before formatting and choose an explicit application behavior, such as reporting a validation error or showing a fallback. Do not assume the formatter itself supplies your input-validation policy.
