Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a packet capture to find traffic Wireshark decodes as STUN, then identify the host, application, destination, and behavior behind each flow. STUN is commonly used for NAT traversal, so its presence alone is not evidence of compromise; investigate deviations from approved applications and normal network behavior.
What STUN traffic can—and cannot—tell you
STUN (Session Traversal Utilities for NAT) helps other protocols work through network address translation. It can reveal a NAT-mapped address and port, support connectivity checks, and help maintain NAT bindings. The IETF describes it as “a tool for other protocols to deal with Network Address Translation (NAT)” in RFC 8489.

Applications using ICE, SIP Outbound, and other network functions may generate legitimate STUN traffic. The protocol can use UDP, TCP, TLS-over-TCP, or DTLS-over-UDP, so a search limited to one familiar port or transport can miss activity. TLS and DTLS can also limit what packet contents are visible unless the capture and decryption context allow inspection.
There is no universal packet-level rule that labels a STUN flow malicious. Treat unusual traffic as a lead and establish which application and host produced it before escalating.

Capture traffic on the Linux interface you need to inspect
For live capture with TShark, choose the relevant interface and save packets for review:
sudo tshark -i eth0 -w stun-review.pcapng
Replace eth0 with the interface carrying the traffic under investigation. Capture placement matters: a host interface, switch mirror, or gateway may expose different sides of a flow. You also need sufficient capture permissions, and packet loss or an incorrect interface can leave gaps in the evidence. TShark supports both live capture and saved-capture analysis; see the TShark manual.

Find packets decoded as STUN
Apply the stun display filter to a saved capture:
tshark -r stun-review.pcapng -Y stun
The -Y option applies a display filter. This finds packets TShark recognizes and decodes as STUN; it is more useful than assuming a port number defines the protocol. It is not proof that every STUN flow was captured or decoded, especially when traffic uses secure transports or the capture is incomplete.
For field-level review, the Wireshark STUN display-filter reference documents fields such as stun.type, stun.type.class, and stun.type.method, as well as attributes and malformed- or short-packet indicators. Field names and availability are version-scoped; if a filter fails, check the installed Wireshark/TShark version and its filter reference.

Attribute each flow to a host and application
For each candidate flow, record the packet evidence and then use endpoint or network telemetry to establish context. Packet decoding can show STUN messages and peers, but it does not by itself identify the Linux process that opened a connection.
- Record the flow: note the local host, direction, remote peer, transport, timestamps, and request/response pattern.
- Identify the owner: use host process or socket telemetry, application logs, and service ownership data where available to determine which process or application generated the traffic.
- Check expected use: compare the application with your approved software inventory and expected network behavior. ICE- or SIP-related software may account for otherwise unfamiliar STUN flows.
- Correlate other records: consult DNS and network telemetry, firewall records, and application logs to verify the destination and timeline.
This attribution step helps distinguish expected NAT traversal from unexplained behavior. A remote address or decoded STUN packet alone does not establish intent.

Decide which patterns warrant follow-up
Investigate a flow when its context departs from what is expected for that host or application. Useful leads include:
Recommended Free Tools
- A host with no expected real-time communications or other STUN-using application contacts an unfamiliar destination.
- Traffic appears at an unusual time, or its rate or destination pattern differs from that host’s baseline.
- Requests recur without expected responses, after accounting for the protocol’s transaction behavior and the possibility of capture loss or asymmetric visibility.
- Packets are malformed or unexpectedly short, which merits validation against the capture conditions and tool version.
These are analyst heuristics, not universal alert thresholds. Set thresholds from your own application inventory and network baseline; the protocol standard and Wireshark documentation do not define a standalone malicious-STUN verdict.

Interpret retransmissions and FINGERPRINT carefully
STUN uses transaction IDs and request/response behavior; clients can have multiple requests outstanding. For UDP and DTLS-over-UDP, RFC 8489 describes retransmissions and recommends an initial retransmission timeout of at least 500 ms, with exceptions for some usages and environments. A repeated request can therefore be ordinary protocol behavior, although unexplained repetition still merits comparison with the host’s normal traffic and expected responses.
The STUN FINGERPRINT attribute is optional. It can help distinguish STUN messages from other protocols when they share a transport address, but whether it is used depends on the particular STUN usage. Its absence alone is not a reliable suspiciousness test.
