To trade between Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver, connect two DS-family systems locally, enter the Union Room on the second floor of a Pokémon Center in each game, and complete the exchange there. Each player needs a compatible Generation IV game card. Nintendo’s original online service, including the Global Trade Station, was discontinued on May 20, 2014; local wireless trading is the documented route for nearby players.
What you need
- Two DS-family systems, one for each player.
- One compatible Generation IV Pokémon game card for each system. Nintendo lists HeartGold, SoulSilver, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum as compatible games for this communication setup.
- Both players in range for local DS Wireless Communications.
You do not need a cable, wireless adapter, or Pokéwalker for this Union Room trade. The procedure below is for the original Nintendo DS releases.

How to trade locally
- Start a compatible game on each system and use local DS Wireless Communications. For a nearby trade, do not try to use the discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.
- In both games, go to a Pokémon Center and take the stairs to the second floor.
- At the counter, enter the Union Room on both systems.
- Once both players are in the room, face the other player and press A to interact.
- Select Trade, choose the Pokémon you want to offer, then select TRADE.
- Review the Pokémon your partner is offering. Select YES only if you are happy with the exchange.
Nintendo’s HeartGold instruction booklet documents the Union Room procedure and compatible cards. It does not establish the exact story milestone at which the room first becomes available, so this guide does not specify one.

Trade evolutions
A Pokémon that evolves by trading evolves as part of the exchange. Check the Pokémon and the proposed trade before confirming if you want to keep a particular Pokémon in its current form.

Ball Capsules
A Pokémon wearing a Ball Capsule cannot be traded. Remove the Ball Capsule before offering that Pokémon.

No—not through the original official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Nintendo says the service was discontinued on May 20, 2014, ending online features that included exchanging in-game characters through the Global Trade Station. Nintendo also says the change did not affect offline play, so local wireless Union Room trades remain the documented option for two nearby players. See Nintendo’s service discontinuation notice.
