Connect a compatible display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad to your Mac mini, then press the power button on its bottom and follow Setup Assistant. The right cable depends on the ports on your exact Mac mini and monitor, so check those before connecting the display.
1. Check your Mac mini and monitor ports
Mac mini ports and supported display features vary by model. Identify your Mac mini generation and inspect the monitor’s video inputs before choosing a cable or adapter. Apple’s display connection guide covers model-specific display connections and capabilities.

On the current Mac mini described in Apple’s guide, display output is available through the HDMI port and rear Thunderbolt/USB-C ports. The two front USB-C ports do not support video. Check your model’s port layout in Apple’s Mac mini port guide rather than assuming every generation has the same arrangement.

2. Connect and turn on the monitor
- Plug the monitor into power if it needs a separate power connection, then turn it on.
- Connect the monitor’s video cable to a compatible video-output port on the back of the Mac mini. If the cable’s connector does not match the available ports, check the monitor’s manual and use a suitable adapter or replacement cable.
- Make sure the cable and ports support the display features you want. A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not guarantee that a cable supports every video capability; confirm compatibility in the device documentation.
Do not choose an adapter based only on the Mac mini’s port. The correct connection depends on the monitor’s input as well as the Mac mini’s output.

3. Connect the keyboard and mouse
You can use wired or Bluetooth accessories. Wired keyboards and mice connect to compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt ports; an adapter may be needed for a different connector. For Bluetooth devices, have them ready to pair. Apple explains accessory connections in its Mac mini accessory guide.
- Wired: Connect the keyboard and mouse to compatible ports. This avoids Bluetooth pairing, though the cable or accessory connector may require an adapter.
- Bluetooth: Select the accessory under System Settings > Bluetooth when pairing is available. Apple says Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse can be connected with their provided cable to pair, then disconnected for Bluetooth use.
4. Turn on the Mac mini and complete Setup Assistant
- Press the power button on the bottom of the Mac mini.
- Follow the Setup Assistant prompts to configure the initial settings. You can choose to transfer data or set up the Mac as new when those options appear.
- If you need to pair a Bluetooth accessory, use System Settings > Bluetooth to select it. Setup Assistant needs a display and an input device to complete setup.
Apple’s Mac mini setup guide describes the initial setup flow. Its getting-started guide likewise directs you to connect a display and input devices, press the power button, and follow Setup Assistant.

5. Adjust display settings after setup
After the Mac starts, open System Settings > Displays to adjust available options such as resolution and whether to mirror or extend the desktop. The resolution and refresh rates supported depend on the specific Mac mini model and display, so check Apple’s display guide for your generation rather than applying current-model specifications to an older Mac mini.
