1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDetecting airborne mould means collecting air with a method suited to the question, then analysing the sample by microscopy, culture, PCR or another appropriate assay. The collection method and the analysis answer different questions: a culture counts organisms able to grow under selected conditions, microscopy can identify and count fungal structures, and PCR detects genetic material from chosen targets. Any result describes the sampled place and time—not total exposure or whether a space is safe.
Is sampling/testing for mold necessary?
Usually not when mould is already visible. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says sampling is generally unnecessary in that situation; finding and correcting the moisture problem and addressing the growth are the priorities. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) do not recommend routine air sampling as part of building air-quality evaluations. EPA guidance on sampling and CDC/NIOSH guidance explain these limits.

Testing may be useful when there is a specific, consequential question that cannot be answered by inspection—for example, a professional investigation of a suspected hidden problem. First decide what decision the result will inform. If a properly designed plan and enough samples cannot answer that question, EPA cautions that sampling may be more misleading than helpful.

An air sample is a snapshot. EPA notes that air sampling reports what was present when sampling took place; concentrations can vary with location, time, activity and environmental conditions. CDC/NIOSH also warns that a short-term negative result may not represent actual exposure. No indoor space is completely free from mould spores, according to CDC/NIOSH.

- Furniture made of wood is a high-risk area for mold, especially black mold. It contains 12 separate tests and is of high value. Take it with you to check your cabinets, wardrobes, and beds!
A count is not a health-risk verdict. EPA says no federal limits have been set for airborne mould or spores, and CDC/NIOSH says short-term spore or culture counts cannot be interpreted as health risks. In healthcare settings, CDC likewise notes that there are no standards linking fungal-spore levels with infection rates; sampling protocols vary and cultures have limitations. A result should not be treated on its own as proof that a building is safe or unsafe.
Choose the collection method and analysis for the question
Collection captures particles; analysis determines what can be detected in what was collected. The right combination depends on whether the question concerns organisms able to grow, fungal structures, or DNA from selected targets. CDC’s environmental sampling guidance describes the options and cautions that no single sampler and assay captures and enumerates every airborne organism.

| Method | What it can contribute | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Solid impaction | Deposits airborne particles on a solid surface, such as coated material or agar, for microscopy or culture. | Sampler design, collection efficiency, airflow and compatibility with the intended analysis matter. |
| Liquid impingement | Collects particles into liquid; CDC describes liquid impingers as practical for microbial air sampling. | Recovery depends on the sampler and organism conditions, so selection must fit the analysis. |
| Filtration or dry collection | Traps particles on a filter and can support nonculture analysis such as PCR. | May not preserve viability; the collection method must suit the planned analysis. |
| Culture | Shows organisms able to grow on the selected media and provides viable/culturable counts. | Can miss organisms that do not grow under those conditions, and results take time. |
| Microscopy | Can resolve and count fungal structures or spores on an appropriate collection medium. | Identification detail and interpretation depend on the method and analyst expertise. |
| PCR | Detects DNA from selected targets, including organisms that are difficult or impossible to culture. | DNA detection does not establish viability, and only chosen targets are detected. |
| Settle plates | Offer simple, low-cost qualitative collection by gravity. | CDC advises against using them to quantify airborne fungal spores: they favour larger particles, may miss suspended individual spores and do not measure sampled air volume. |
Culture and PCR are not interchangeable: culture asks whether organisms grow under the chosen conditions, while PCR detects targeted genetic material. Similarly, a settle plate is not an air-volume measurement. CDC discusses these distinctions in its environmental sampling guidance; culture and PCR considerations are also covered in the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods, Chapter BA.
