Volcanoes may have created some of the chemical conditions that helped life emerge, but scientists have not found a single volcanic birthplace or confirmed the complete pathway from chemistry to living cells. Deep-sea hydrothermal vents and land-based hot springs are both plausible settings under study; each offers different sources of energy, minerals and opportunities to concentrate chemical ingredients.
What volcanoes may reveal about life’s beginnings
Volcanic environments bring together heat, water, reactive minerals and chemical imbalances that can drive reactions. Those features make them useful places to investigate how some ingredients or energy pathways relevant to life might have arisen. They do not, by themselves, show that life began in a volcano.

NASA’s overview of early Earth describes a range of possible settings—including oceans, beaches, rock surfaces and volcanoes—and frames life’s emergence as likely involving building blocks interacting in specialized environments with available energy. A 2024 review by Rodriguez and colleagues likewise surveys early-Earth geochemistry and proposed origin settings without establishing one as the answer. One proposed model places early chemistry around alkaline hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s 2014 account of the “water world” hypothesis, alkaline fluids meet a more acidic, carbon-dioxide-rich ocean at mineral chimney walls. The contrast could maintain proton and electrical gradients—differences across a boundary that can help drive energy transfer and chemical reactions.

Minerals in the chimney might help reactions involving carbon dioxide and hydrogen, or methane supplied by vent chemistry. In this model, gradients provide a possible energy source for chemistry; they are not proof that cells formed there. The proposal distinguishes these relatively alkaline systems from hotter, acidic “black smokers.” JPL’s account says whether alkaline vents were life’s hatcheries remains unanswered. NASA JPL: “New Study Outlines ‘Water World’ Theory of Life’s Origins” (April 15, 2014)
JPL research scientist Michael Russell, lead author of the study described there, summarized the model this way: “Life is the process that resolves these disequilibria.” JPL researcher Laurie Barge, the study’s second author, said: “Life lives off proton gradients and the transfer of electrons.” These are explanations of the hypothesis in an institutional news account, not proof that this scenario is the accepted history of life’s origin.

What serpentinization does—and does not—show
Serpentinization happens when water reacts with ultramafic rock. Iron oxidation in that reaction can release hydrogen and heat. Hydrogen can then react with carbon dioxide to produce methane without organisms. NASA Astrobiology describes the Prony hydrothermal field as an analog for investigating such early-Earth processes. NASA Astrobiology: “Hydrothermal Vents Could Explain Chemical Precursors to Life”
This matters because it shows that some simple carbon compounds can form through geology alone. But making methane—or another organic molecule—is not the same as making a self-replicating, evolving system. Prony is a modern analog, not direct evidence of where life began.

Could life have started in hot springs on land?
Terrestrial volcanic hot springs and pools are another proposed setting, not a settled alternative to deep-sea vents. The National Academies’ workshop report discusses how hot springs might concentrate prebiotic ingredients, while also addressing a challenge for forming polymers: water can complicate reactions that join small molecules into longer chains. National Academies: “Terrestrial Hot Springs and the Origin of Life”
A 2024 review by Hadland, Hamilton and Duhamel describes volcanic habitats that include hot springs, fumaroles, lava tubes and newly cooled rock. Present-day microbial colonization of such terrain shows that these environments can support life today; it does not establish that life originated there. How scientists compare the proposed settings
There is no established winner between underwater vents and land-based hot springs. Researchers can compare the environments by asking how each handles the same basic problems:
- Exposure: Is the chemistry occurring deep underwater or in a setting exposed to air?
- Energy and gradients: What chemical imbalances or gradients persist, and could they power useful reactions?
- Concentration: Can ingredients gather together? Hot springs may offer wet-dry cycles, while submerged systems have different water and chemistry conditions.
- Minerals and reactions: Which mineral surfaces and reactants are available, and can they promote abiotic chemistry?
- Increasing complexity: Can candidate organic molecules form, persist and organize into more complex systems?
These comparisons help frame the question, but the cited sources do not resolve it. Early Earth had multiple environments and energy sources, and a plausible setting for one chemical step need not be the place—or the full process—that produced life.
