Can AI Predict and Make New Inorganic Materials? Google DeepMind and Berkeley Lab Put It to the Test

Google DeepMind predicted crystal candidates while Berkeley Lab’s A-Lab used robotic synthesis and X-ray diffraction to test selected inorganic powders. Its paper confirmed 36 of 57 targets, not working devices or commercial materials.

AI can help identify promising inorganic crystal structures, and robots can test ways to make selected candidates—but a predicted structure is not a synthesized material, and a synthesized phase is not proof of a useful product. In a 2023 study, Google DeepMind’s GNoME supplied computational materials information while Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s A-Lab used robotic powder synthesis and experimental measurements to test selected targets. A-Lab’s peer-reviewed paper reports that it synthesized 36 of 57 targets over 17 days of continuous operation.

What did Google DeepMind and Berkeley Lab each contribute?

GNoME, short for Graph Networks for Materials Exploration, is a Google DeepMind system that generates candidate crystal structures and predicts their stability. Berkeley Lab’s A-Lab is an autonomous laboratory that attempts to synthesize selected inorganic materials and checks the resulting powders experimentally. The systems addressed different parts of the materials-discovery process: prediction helped identify candidates, while the laboratory tested whether particular target compounds could be made.

The A-Lab paper says its target materials were drawn from the Materials Project and cross-referenced with an analogous Google DeepMind database. That does not mean A-Lab attempted every GNoME prediction or that all its targets came from GNoME. The A-Lab paper and DeepMind’s GNoME announcement describe related but distinct contributions.

What do the prediction and synthesis numbers mean?

DeepMind reported that GNoME predicted 2.2 million crystals, including 380,000 it identified as its most stable candidate materials. It also reported that external researchers had independently made 736 structures predicted by GNoME. These figures describe GNoME’s broader computational and external-validation context; they are not A-Lab’s target count or synthesis result.

For A-Lab’s own experiment, the peer-reviewed paper reports 36 of 57 target compounds synthesized during 17 days of continuous operation. The authors manually reviewed the X-ray diffraction patterns to confirm those 36. The paper’s confirmation of a target phase does not mean every resulting sample was pure: successful samples could contain substantial byproducts. The paper’s review also differs from a contemporaneous Nature News account that described 41 materials; four additional cases were inconclusive in the paper’s later manual review. The peer-reviewed result is therefore best stated as 36 confirmed targets out of 57.

Stage What the evidence establishes What it does not establish
GNoME prediction Computationally generated crystal candidates and predicted stability. That every candidate can be synthesized, or that A-Lab tested it.
A-Lab synthesis The paper reports 36 target phases confirmed by manual diffraction review among 57 targets. That each sample was high-purity or suitable for a device.
Application Potential relevance to areas such as batteries, solar cells, superconductors and electronics. Useful device performance, economical large-scale production or commercial readiness.

How did A-Lab use robots and machine learning?

A-Lab focused on air-stable inorganic powders, not arbitrary chemistry or the liquid-handling tasks often associated with chemistry automation. Its workflow linked computer-guided recipe selection with physical preparation, heating and measurement:

  1. Choose a target and propose a recipe. The system combined computational phase-stability data, machine-learning interpretation and synthesis heuristics learned from research literature to generate initial recipes and propose temperatures.
  2. Prepare precursor powders. Robots dosed and mixed the starting materials, then moved crucibles into furnaces for heating.
  3. Measure the products. After cooling, samples were transferred robotically for grinding and X-ray diffraction. Machine-learning analysis estimated which phases were present and their fractions; automated Rietveld refinement provided a further check.
  4. Adjust when the target yield was inadequate. Active learning used computed reaction energies and observed outcomes to propose follow-up recipes.

This loop made experimental outcomes useful for later attempts, rather than treating a computer prediction as the final answer. The paper describes multigram powder samples as useful for subsequent device-level testing, but it does not report a working device demonstration. For the experimental workflow and its results, see the Nature paper.

Why did some predicted materials fail to appear?

“Stable” in this context describes computational phase-stability predictions; it is not a promise that a material will form readily under a particular recipe. A-Lab did not obtain 17 of its 57 targets. The paper discusses several possible reasons for failure:

  • Slow reaction kinetics that prevented the desired phase from forming under the attempted conditions.
  • Volatile precursors that could be lost during processing.
  • Amorphization, which can leave material without the expected crystalline structure.
  • Inaccuracies in computation, including errors relevant to predicted stability.

These outcomes illustrate why synthesis is a separate test of a candidate. A model can rank or propose structures, but laboratory conditions, reaction pathways and measurement determine whether a target phase is actually obtained.

Does this mean AI has made better batteries or solar cells?

No such device result is established by this study. Batteries, solar cells, superconductors and electronics are motivating areas where better materials could matter, not demonstrated applications of A-Lab’s confirmed powders. The distinction is important: prediction is not synthesis; detecting a target phase is not proof of high purity; and neither result alone shows performance, scalable manufacturing or commercial readiness.

As Ekin Dogus Cubuk, who led Google DeepMind’s materials discovery team in London, put it: “A lot of the technologies around us, including batteries and solar cells, could really improve with better materials.” That is the rationale for the work, rather than a claim that this study delivered those improvements. Nature News’ 29 November 2023 report discusses that motivation and the collaboration.
