In a 2008 report, a research team described a material that swells when it absorbs water and shrinks as it dries, altering the spacing of its optical structure. The result is a visible humidity response—not evidence of a currently available consumer monitor.
What are the “crystals” in this humidity sensor?
They are not ordinary mineral crystals. The material is a polymer-based photonic-crystal hydrogel, described by Chemistry World in a report published on 28 January 2008.

The team led by Yanlin Song of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made styrene-based polymer spheres approximately 150 nm in size, soaked them in acrylamide solution, and used ultraviolet light to initiate polymerization. The resulting structure, called a composite opal, combines the spheres with a polyacrylamide hydrogel.

How does humidity produce a colour change?
The hydrogel takes up water from humid air and swells; as the air dries, it loses water and shrinks. That movement changes the spacing of the structure and therefore its optical response, which appears as a change in visible colour. Song described the mechanism this way: “When the humidity increases or decreases, the polyacrylamide swells or shrinks, which extends or contracts the structure.”

In the same 2008 report, Yadong Yin, an expert in colour-changing photonic crystals at the University of California, Riverside, said the system had “a large tuning range that covers the entire visible spectrum” and was “completely reversible.” That was an expert assessment reported at the time, not a current evaluation of a marketed sensor.
How does it differ from a conventional humidity sensor?

Is this a product you can buy?
The report describes a research approach and suggests possible uses, not a verified retail monitor. It mentions food and electronics as settings where harmful condensation matters and presents inexpensive, accurate sensors as a potential application. It does not establish deployment, commercial availability, or measured accuracy. The 2008 account also provides no response time, sensing range, cycle life, or calibration requirements, so those performance characteristics cannot be inferred from the colour-changing demonstration.
What the reported size does—and does not—tell you
The approximately 150 nm figure refers to the styrene-based polymer spheres used to construct the material. It is a fabrication detail, not a measurement of sensor accuracy, sensitivity, or usable humidity range.
