The 2025 result is promising, but it is preclinical: it does not show that the proteins are safe or effective in people, approved, or available as treatment.
Could designer proteins treat deadly snake bites?
Possibly in the future, as a targeted addition to snakebite treatment. In a study published in Nature on 15 January 2025, Vázquez Torres and colleagues used RFdiffusion, a deep-learning-based protein-design method, to create small proteins that bind selected toxins in the three-finger toxin (3FTx) family. The researchers reported that the designed proteins neutralized toxins from all three 3FTx subfamilies in laboratory assays. Neurotoxin-binding proteins also protected mice in lethal challenge experiments, including tests in which the binders were given after toxin injection.

The authors summarized their results this way: “The designed proteins effectively neutralized all three 3FTx subfamilies in vitro and protected mice from a lethal neurotoxin challenge.” That is evidence from laboratory and animal experiments, not proof of a treatment for people. Three-finger toxins are components of some elapid snake venoms. The study targeted selected short-chain and long-chain alpha-neurotoxins, as well as cytotoxins. Alpha-neurotoxins can interfere with nicotinic acetylcholine receptor function, disrupting nerve-to-muscle signaling and causing severe, potentially life-threatening neurotoxicity. Cytotoxins can damage tissue.

The scope matters: these designs target particular toxin classes and selected toxins and venoms. The findings do not establish protection against every snake species, every toxin, or all the effects of envenoming. A binder that neutralizes one toxin target is not automatically a broad-spectrum antivenom.
Do AI-designed proteins work against snake venom?
They worked against the selected targets in the experiments reported, but “work” needs to be understood at the right evidence stage:

- Ask for medical advice immediately:Snake bite kit is a sturdy, reliable First Aid tool for extracting subcutaneous venom from snake bites, bee stings, wasp stings,Absorbing pus in the wound, etc. Note, venom extractors work well to pull venom from just beneath the skin but not from within the muscle tissue. Effectiveness will vary depending upon where the bite/sting occurred and how deep it is. Always seek professional medical attention immediately.
- In vitro: the designed proteins neutralized tested toxins from all three 3FTx subfamilies in laboratory assays.
- In mice: neurotoxin binders protected animals from lethal toxin challenges, including post-exposure rescue experiments.
- In people: the study reports no human treatment results. It does not establish human safety, effectiveness, dose, or clinical benefit.
Mouse protection is an important step in testing a candidate, but it cannot show whether a treatment will work safely in patients with real snakebites. The study also does not demonstrate that the proteins improve outcomes when combined with conventional antivenom.
How might they complement conventional antivenom?
Conventional antivenoms are made using antibodies from the plasma of immunized animals. The Nature paper describes challenges that can include high production costs, cold-chain needs that complicate access in remote areas, adverse reactions, and limited efficacy against some three-finger toxins. These limitations help explain interest in targeted alternatives; they do not mean existing antivenoms are unnecessary.

The authors suggest that designed proteins might eventually be made through recombinant production, could be small and stable, and might be used to strengthen conventional antivenoms. These are prospective advantages, not demonstrated improvements in cost, storage, safety, access, or patient outcomes. The authors put the idea conditionally: “Although traditional antivenoms will likely remain a therapeutic cornerstone in snakebite treatment for the immediate future, our de novo designed binders could potentially be used as fortifying agents to improve the efficacy of antivenoms.”
| Question | Designed proteins in the 2025 study | Conventional antivenom |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence stage | Laboratory assays and mouse challenge experiments; no human treatment results reported in the study. | Established medical treatment used in clinical care. |
| Coverage | Designed for selected 3FTx toxins; universal snake and venom coverage is not established. | Coverage depends on the antivenom and the venoms it was made to address. |
| Production and storage | Recombinant production, stability, and easier distribution are potential advantages, not demonstrated clinical outcomes. | Animal-plasma antibody production; the paper notes cost and cold-chain challenges. |
| Safety and effectiveness in patients | Not established by the study. | Used clinically, though adverse reactions and limits against some toxins remain considerations. |
Is this new antivenom available to people?
No. The proteins described in the Nature study are research-stage candidates. The study does not report human trials, regulatory approval, or clinical availability, so they should not be treated as an option for a snakebite.

The World Health Organization’s 2025 target product profiles describe goals for small-molecule or engineered-antibody snakebite therapeutics in early-stage development and/or clinical trials. They are intended to guide development toward the needs of affected populations and appropriate safety and effectiveness; they do not indicate that the proteins in this study are in trials or available to patients. The need for better snakebite treatments is substantial. The 2025 Nature article cites more than two million snakebite cases, 100,000 fatalities, and 300,000 permanent disabilities annually, attributing those burden figures to references cited in the paper. They are figures reported by the article, not a new 2026 estimate.

Protein design offers a way to build binders for specific toxins rather than relying only on antibodies raised in animals. Whether this approach can become a safe, affordable, practical treatment—and whether it can meaningfully complement existing antivenoms—requires further development and human evidence.
