Start by defining the character’s growth pattern, silhouette, density, length, grooming and asymmetry. Then choose strands, cards or a texture according to camera distance and performance budget. Build the beard as a separate groom group, give it its own masks and material controls, blend its roots into the skin, bind it to the animated face and author deliberate lower-detail representations.
The result should preserve a believable outline at gameplay distance, reveal skin through sparse areas, follow plausible growth directions, deform with the jaw and lips, and respond credibly to light. The workflow below applies whether the creator is built around an Unreal groom pipeline, a procedural character tool, or a custom engine.

Start with a hair story, not a brush preset
Before creating geometry or painting a mask, write a short description of the character’s facial-hair history. Include age, time since the last shave, grooming routine, occupation, climate, ethnicity and whether the beard is deliberately styled, routinely trimmed or neglected. These decisions determine the visual evidence the player should see.
Translate the story into visible traits
- Fresh stubble: keep the apparent length short, allow skin to show between follicles and use strong value breakup rather than an opaque dark patch.
- Several days of growth: vary length and direction, soften the cheek and neck borders and let a few hairs extend beyond the main field.
- Trimmed beard: use clean but imperfect cheek and neck boundaries. A perfectly straight edge looks painted on; small variations in length and density make the line believable.
- Long beard: establish clumps, directional flow, flyaways and secondary motion. The lower silhouette matters as much as the cheek coverage.
- Mustache and sideburns: treat them as separate design zones. Mustache hairs follow the lip line, while sideburns must transition into the head-hair silhouette and ear area.
Preserve asymmetry. One cheek can be slightly denser, one mustache edge less tidy, or one sideburn a little shorter. Small differences prevent a procedural pattern from reading as a mirrored decal.

Choose strands, cards or texture by camera and budget
Representation is a camera-and-performance decision. Epic’s 2026 Unreal documentation describes a strand workflow that renders individual hairs with physically accurate motion, while also supporting traditional card-based approximations. Strands are appropriate when facial hair is a hero feature in a close dialogue shot or cinematic and the target hardware can carry the simulation and rendering cost. Cards or baked groom textures scale better for ordinary gameplay, crowds and lower levels of detail. Texture-only stubble is suitable only when the face occupies few pixels and the lighting does not expose its limitations.
Practical representation choices
| Representation | Best use | Strengths | Risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual strands | Hero close-ups, cinematics and dialogue shots | Natural silhouette, strand-level variation and physically based motion | Higher rendering, simulation, memory and binding cost |
| Hair cards | Gameplay characters and mid-distance views | Scalable geometry with controllable alpha, depth and flow textures | Can reveal ribbons, square edges or sorting problems if poorly authored |
| Baked groom or hair-helmet textures | Lower-detail gameplay and crowds | Low runtime cost while retaining a designed coverage pattern | Limited parallax and little response to changing facial shape |
| Texture-only stubble | Small on-screen faces and distant LODs | Minimal geometry and simple animation integration | Looks painted on when the camera, light or resolution reveals the flat surface |
Unreal’s generated strands textures are intended to support card and hair-helmet meshes. That makes it possible to derive lower-cost forms from a higher-quality groom rather than inventing an unrelated beard for every LOD.
A four-level LOD ladder
- LOD 0: use strands or dense cards for close dialogue and cinematics. Preserve mustache, sideburn and chin separation.
- LOD 1: reduce strand count or card complexity while keeping the outer silhouette and the major facial-hair zones.
- LOD 2: use low-density cards with baked depth and coverage. Simplify internal clumping, not the cheek and jaw outline.
- LOD 3: switch to a beard or stubble texture, or a sparse mask, when the face occupies only a few pixels.
Fade between representations over a distance or screen-size threshold that you test from the actual gameplay camera. A technically detailed groom that disappears abruptly is less convincing than a simpler asset with a controlled transition.

Model or paint the beard as regions rather than one uniform field. Create masks for the cheek, jaw, chin, mustache, soul patch, sideburn and neck. Each region can then receive different density, length, curl, clumping and color parameters.
Make growth direction anatomically readable
- Cheek hair generally angles toward the jaw rather than pointing in one repeated screen-space direction.
- Chin hair often projects outward or curls differently from cheek hair.
- Mustache hair follows the upper-lip contour and should not form a straight horizontal brush stroke.
- Neck growth can change direction and density as it approaches the throat; avoid a hard painted ring.
- Sideburns need a gradual transition into head hair instead of an isolated vertical block.
Use a few shorter, lighter or misaligned hairs around each edge. The irregular fringe should be sparse enough to imply growth, not so noisy that it destroys the designed silhouette. Sparse zones must reveal skin; making every pixel opaque removes the follicle pattern that signals real stubble.

Author the beard as a separate groom group
Keep facial hair independent from the scalp hair and the skin material. Epic’s quick-start guidance states that a character groom can contain distinct head, beard, brow and other hair types, each with its own material and physics settings. This separation lets you change beard density, simulate only selected regions, assign a different LOD policy and repair facial intersections without disturbing the hairstyle.
Unreal-oriented import path
- Export the groom from the digital-content-creation application as an Alembic
.abcfile. - Import the Alembic groom into the project.
- Add or configure a Groom Component on the character and attach the beard groom to the face.
- Create a Binding Asset for the target skeletal mesh. The binding caches projected groom data so the projection does not have to be repeated at startup.
- Assign beard-specific materials, physics settings and LOD behavior rather than inheriting scalp-hair defaults.
The exact property names and plugin requirements can vary with engine releases, so verify them against the documentation for the version used by the project. The production principle remains stable: the groom, binding and animated face must share a consistent coordinate and deformation setup.

Procedural and digital-human starting points
A digital-human base can supply photorealistic proportions, skin and existing hair, allowing the team to concentrate on beard design. Epic’s MetaHuman material describes a photoreal digital-human starting point with hair and clothing. A procedural workflow is also viable: SideFX’s tutorial listing dated March 24, 2026 follows a character from initial idea through grooming, skinning, rigging, look development and final engine integration. In either case, replace generic facial-hair presets with character-specific growth maps and edge treatment.
Build a material that describes hair, not paint
A single dark base color cannot create convincing facial hair. Use separate controls for coverage, direction, depth and variation so lighting produces the visual cues the eye expects.
Core maps and parameters
- Diffuse or base color: establish the broad hair tone, then add restrained warm, cool and gray variation. A black beard still contains tonal differences.
- Alpha or coverage: define the visible portion of a card and break up ribbon edges. Use irregular opacity at cheeks, jaw and neck borders.
- Root-to-tip variation: vary root and tip color or value where the character’s hair supports it. Roots may be darker or less saturated, while sun-exposed tips can be lighter.
- Roughness and specular: keep highlights directional and controlled. Excessive gloss makes facial hair look like plastic fibers.
- Tangent and flow: align the anisotropic highlight with strand direction. Epic describes the Tangent property as a vector controlling the direction in which the elongated hair highlight stretches. Flow maps are useful when card sheets bend or are oriented differently.
- Depth and pixel-depth treatment: add the impression of volume and soften the point where cards meet skin. This is especially important on flat cheek cards.
- Unique-ID or random variation: break repeated card patterns and prevent every strand cluster from receiving the same response.
Reallusion’s Auto Setup documentation uses a practical parameter vocabulary for hair, brows and beards: color, strand highlights, roughness, specular, thickness or alpha, root color, tip color and additional opacity. Those controls are useful even in a custom shader because they separate the visual jobs that artists otherwise try to solve with one texture.

Do not overgeneralize a historical texture set
Epic’s photorealistic-character reference identifies a 4K skin-texture setup from its UE4.27-era documentation with five maps: diffuse, roughness, specularity, scatter and normal. Treat that as a historical Epic reference, not a universal requirement. A beard material may need fewer maps for a stylized or performance-constrained game, while a close-up character may need more targeted masks.
Blend follicles into the skin
The beard should appear to emerge from the face, not sit on top of it. Epic documents follicle textures as distance fields of hair roots that let the underlying skeletal-surface material capture hair-root effects. Its example combines separate hair, eyelash and mustache or stubble grooms into channels, allowing the skin shader to react to each groom.
Skin-integration checklist
- Generate or paint a follicle/root mask for the beard regions.
- Let sparse stubble reveal pores and the skin’s own roughness instead of replacing them with a flat gray patch.
- Add a restrained occlusion or value shift under dense regions; keep it subordinate to the skin response.
- Lower opacity irregularly at the cheek and neck edges rather than drawing a perfect contour.
- Ensure the skin and beard use compatible color space, normal orientation and tangent conventions.
A root mask is not a substitute for coverage control. If the beard is uniformly opaque, the skin shader cannot restore natural density variation. Conversely, an overly strong follicle darkening can make the character look bruised, so judge it under neutral and colored lights.
Test deformation with the face actually moving
Facial hair must be bound to the same animated head or facial mesh as the character. Static inspection misses the failures that appear when the jaw opens or the lips compress.
Animation tests to run
- Open and close the jaw through its full range.
- Compress and protrude the lips; verify that the mustache does not intersect the upper lip.
- Raise the cheeks into a smile and pull them down into a frown.
- Turn and tilt the head while checking cheek, chin and sideburn attachment.
- Move the neck and inspect the lower beard boundary for floating cards or shearing.
- Scrub quickly through the animation to expose popping, unstable sorting or delayed simulation.
Use the Binding Asset where appropriate to cache projected groom data, as documented by Epic. Inspect both the highest-detail groom and every lower LOD: a beard that follows the face at LOD 0 can still float when a simplified card mesh uses a different anchor or normal.

Lighting, simulation and performance checks
Evaluate under more than one light
- Neutral front light: reveals density, color variation and painted-on edges.
- Warm and cool light: exposes whether the material is relying on an inappropriate fixed tint.
- Rim and back light: tests translucency or scatter. The beard should show controlled light transmission, not a glowing halo.
- Side light: reveals card depth, tangent errors and repeated texture patterns.
Judge the result at the smallest expected face size, not only in a high-resolution editor viewport. Count strand and card cost, texture memory, simulation workload and the frequency of LOD transitions. Separate beard physics from scalp physics when possible; short facial hair often needs little or no secondary motion, while a long beard may need clump-level movement rather than expensive simulation for every strand.
Compare a creator’s facial-hair options systematically
If a character creator offers several beard presets, evaluate the actual output rather than the thumbnail. Use the same head, expression, camera and lighting for each option.
| Axis | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Silhouette | Cheek, jaw, chin, mustache, sideburn and neck shape from front and profile |
| Density | Whether skin shows naturally through sparse regions |
| Direction | Whether flow follows plausible growth instead of one repeated brush stroke |
| Variation | Root and tip color, length, curl, clumping, asymmetry and gray hairs |
| Skin blend | Irregular edges, follicle treatment, visible pores and no decal-like border |
| Animation | Jaw, lip, cheek and neck deformation without floating or intersection |
| Performance | Strand count, card complexity, texture memory and LOD transitions |
| Lighting | Roughness, anisotropic highlights, scatter and backlight behavior |
Troubleshoot the common failures
“The beard looks painted on”
Usually the coverage is too uniform, the edge is too straight or the shader lacks depth. Lower density in selected regions, add an irregular alpha fringe, introduce a root mask and use depth or pixel-depth treatment on cards. Check that pores and skin roughness remain visible through stubble.
“Every strand points the same way”
Separate the growth maps by cheek, chin, mustache and neck. Rotate flow direction with the anatomy, then add small curl, length and tangent variation. A random noise texture alone produces visual static rather than believable growth.
“Cards look like ribbons”
Inspect alpha coverage, card orientation, tangent or flow maps and depth treatment. Break large sheets into clumps with varied widths, avoid visible rectangular borders and ensure the card normals are consistent. Check sorting under backlight and at grazing angles.
Best Value
“The mustache intersects the mouth”
Test lip compression rather than only a neutral pose. Correct the binding or groom guide around the upper lip, preserve a small clearance and verify the same fix in each LOD. Do not hide the intersection by making the mustache uniformly opaque.
“The beard floats after an LOD switch”
Compare the simplified mesh’s anchors, skin weights, normals and binding data with LOD 0. Reproject or rebuild the Binding Asset if the target skeletal mesh changed. A texture-only LOD may need a matching skin mask even when it has no geometry.
“The beard glows around the outline”
Reduce backlight transmission or scatter, inspect alpha fringes for bright matte pixels and verify that the hair’s color space is correct. Keep edge translucency controlled and localized to individual hairs rather than the entire card.
A production-ready checklist
- The character brief specifies age, shaving interval, grooming, climate, occupation, ethnicity and intentional asymmetry.
- Cheek, jaw, chin, mustache, soul patch, sideburn and neck masks are independently editable.
- Growth direction, density, length, curl, clumping and gray variation are represented by parameters or maps.
- The beard is a separate groom group with its own material, physics and LOD policy.
- The high-detail groom exports as Alembic
.abc, imports correctly, uses a Groom Component and has a Binding Asset for the target skeletal mesh. - Materials include coverage, root-to-tip variation, restrained roughness and specular, tangent or flow control, depth treatment and random or unique-ID variation where needed.
- A follicle or root mask integrates the beard with the skin without overpowering pores and roughness.
- Jaw, lip, cheek, neck and head-turn animation tests pass at every LOD.
- Neutral, warm, cool, rim and backlight checks show no painted edge, plastic gloss or glowing halo.
- The representation changes with camera distance, and transitions are tested from the actual gameplay view.
Bottom line
Design realistic facial hair as a controlled system of silhouette, growth maps, material variation, skin integration, animation binding and LODs. Use strands when close-up fidelity justifies their cost, cards or baked groom textures for scalable gameplay and texture-only stubble only at distances where the camera cannot expose its flatness. The beard becomes convincing when its direction, density and edge irregularity agree with the character’s story—and when it continues to behave like part of the face during movement and under changing light.
