How to Design Crypto Onboarding That Gets Users to Their First Transaction

A practical guide to crypto onboarding: set expectations, explain verification and custody, make transaction effects clear, and measure each step through completion.

A strong crypto onboarding flow connects account creation, any required identity checks, wallet setup, and the first transaction in one guided journey. Set expectations before asking for sensitive information, explain each security or verification step when it appears, and make the transaction’s effects understandable before the user approves it. Then measure where people get stuck and improve the flow without weakening necessary controls.

What should a crypto onboarding flow include?

Design onboarding as a sequence that ends with a user understanding and completing a first transaction—not as a signup form followed by a separate tutorial. The path may include account creation, identity verification, wallet or custody setup, funding, transaction review, submission, and completion. Which steps apply depends on the product, its capabilities, risk controls, and the user’s jurisdiction.

Keep useful explanations close to the action they explain. A short, relevant prompt at the moment a person is asked to verify identity or approve a transaction is more useful than requiring them to absorb a large block of technical guidance before they can proceed. Stripe’s crypto onboarding guidance recommends clear steps, progress indicators, status updates, and localized requirements.

What should users know before they provide sensitive information?

Set expectations before the request

Before asking for identity details or security setup, explain what the user will need, why the step is appearing, and what capability it enables. Describe how the information or security measure is used in plain language; do not assume that a request is self-explanatory just because it is common in financial services.

Show progress and status

Use a progress indicator that reflects the actual journey. After a user submits information, distinguish between received, pending, approved, and action-needed states where those states apply. If a check is delayed or unsuccessful, explain the next useful action instead of leaving the user at a generic error screen.

Localize instructions and requirements to the markets the product serves. A single global flow may not accurately explain what a particular user must provide or which capabilities are available to them.

How should crypto KYC fit into the flow?

Decide which identity checks apply to each intended capability, transaction limit, risk control, and jurisdiction. The sequence and depth of verification are product- and market-specific; there is no universal KYC flow established for every crypto service. Do not imply that a user can skip a check when the product or applicable requirements make it necessary.

Make the relationship between verification and access legible. If a user can proceed with some capabilities while another check is pending, show what is available now and what still requires approval. For example, Coinbase’s Customers API documentation describes capability requirements with states such as active, pending, and still needed. That is a specific partner infrastructure example, not a universal model: the documentation says live access is limited to onboarded select partners and that KYC currently supports US individuals.

Track verification submission, outcomes, time to resolution, and recovery paths separately. That makes it easier to tell whether users are confused by the request, unable to provide what is needed, or waiting on a decision.

How should the flow explain custody and wallet setup?

Explain whether the service is custodial or self-custodial when that distinction changes what the user controls, must protect, or may need to recover. Introduce concepts at the moment they affect the next action rather than front-loading unfamiliar terms. Before a user sets up or uses a wallet, tell them what they are protecting and what the next approval authorizes.

Choice What to make clear Key design trade-off
Custodial journey Who controls the keys, what the service manages, and how account access or recovery works. The product can manage more of the wallet experience, but users still need a clear account-security and recovery explanation.
Self-custodial journey What the user controls, what they must protect, and what recovery options do—and do not—restore. The user has direct responsibility for wallet access, so the flow must make approval and recovery implications understandable.
Embedded or abstracted wallet How the wallet is created or accessed, what remains under the user’s control, and how transaction approval is shown. It may reduce the number of wallet-specific steps in the interface, but it must not obscure custody, recovery, or what an approval does.
Standalone wallet How the wallet connects to the service and which steps require the user to switch contexts. The user encounters a more distinct wallet flow; the handoff and transaction details need to remain clear across interfaces.

Coinbase Institutional’s 2025 outlook, published in December 2024, discusses account abstraction, session keys, passkeys, and embedded wallets as UX trends expected or emerging in 2025. Treat that as the publisher’s market view, not evidence that one approach is right for every product. Choose based on who controls keys, the user’s recovery responsibilities, the required compliance model, and how clearly the interface can present transaction approval.

How can the first crypto transaction be easier to understand?

Show the meaningful details before approval

Before signature or submission, present the asset, amount, recipient or destination, fees or estimated costs, and any material uncertainty the interface can explain. Use familiar labels and a clear review step; do not make a user infer the transaction’s practical effect from raw technical data alone.

Translate technical effects when the data supports it

Where reliable decoding or simulation is available, explain in ordinary language what the transaction is expected to do and what the simulation indicates. Avoid presenting either as infallible: decoded details and predicted outcomes depend on the quality and availability of underlying data.

The Ethereum Foundation identifies blind signing—approving transaction data without understanding its effects—as a major wallet UX security problem. It describes human-readable transaction decoding and simulated outcomes as possible ways to improve transparency in “Trillion Dollar Security – Phase 2”, published August 20, 2025. Its statement that “Wallet UX is where security begins for all users of Ethereum” underlines why transaction comprehension is part of security design, not just presentation.

How should submission and completion states work?

Do not label a transaction “complete” merely because the user pressed a button or the app submitted it. Show submission as its own state, then communicate confirmation or another product-defined completion state when it occurs. Explain pending, delayed, and failed states in language that tells the user what has happened and what they can safely do next.

Status labels and timing should match the product’s network and transaction model. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal confirmation time or a single status taxonomy, so avoid promising one timeframe across transactions or networks unless the product can support it.

How should a team measure and improve the journey?

Instrument the whole activation path rather than treating account creation as the finish line. Useful events include:

  • Account creation started and completed
  • Verification started, submitted, and resolved, including the outcome
  • Wallet setup completed
  • Funding started and completed, where funding is part of the journey
  • Transaction review opened, submission attempted, and transaction completed or failed

Compare abandonment and failure at each stage, then investigate the reason behind the drop. Test changes with the product’s own audience. Consider completion alongside fraud, support burden, and whether users understand what they are approving; reducing screens alone is not a sound measure of success.

One dated reference point is Incognia’s February 8, 2022 company announcement: it said a study reviewing 19 crypto exchange and wallet apps found an average onboarding time of 1 minute and 53 seconds and 11 screens on average. Those figures describe that study, not today’s market average or a target for completing a first transaction. The reviewed material does not establish a current, independently verified universal first-transaction completion rate or a quantified causal lift from a particular design change.

What compliance boundaries should product teams account for?

Legal obligations depend on the activity, product, and jurisdiction. The SEC Division of Trading and Markets’ April 13, 2026 staff statement addresses broker-dealer registration under Exchange Act Section 15(a) for certain interfaces that prepare transactions in crypto asset securities using self-custodial wallets. It describes conditions involving user customization and education, routing presentation, objective parameters, compensation, and prominent disclosures. It is not a general clearance for crypto products; the statement describes itself as interim and says that, absent intervening action, it will be considered withdrawn five years after April 13, 2026. Read the SEC staff statement in its stated scope and have qualified counsel assess the particular service and jurisdiction.
