DAU counts users who perform a defined action in a day; cohort retention tracks whether a defined group returns over time; wallet activity describes either in-app wallet behavior or on-chain transactions. These measures answer different questions. A rise in DAU does not by itself show that users are sticking with an app, and on-chain transactions do not by themselves prove that someone returned to a particular app.
How the three metrics differ
| Measure | What it counts | Question it answers | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| DAU | Unique users who perform a chosen action during one daily interval. | How many users were active today under this definition? | A daily count does not show whether those users return over time. The selected event and identity rules affect the result. |
| Cohort retention | Users in a defined starting group who meet a return-event condition, measured against the eligible cohort. | Which users return, when do they return, and after what starting behavior? | The start event, return event, interval, timezone, and retention method can all change the result. |
| Wallet activity | In-app wallet events or on-chain behavior, potentially counted as users, addresses, sessions, or transactions. | Are people using wallet features in the app, or are blockchain addresses transacting? | An address or transaction is not necessarily an identifiable person or an app user. |
Amplitude describes retention as measuring how often users return to an app over a time frame in its glossary. Product analytics generally relies on logged events, while blockchain analysis can examine address-level behavior. Because those are different measurement units, the results should remain separate unless there is a defensible way to connect them.

Define DAU before comparing it
DAU is not a universal count of everyone who opened an app. It is the number of unique users who performed a specified action during a specified daily interval. Amplitude’s definitions describe activity through logged events in a selected interval; Mixpanel’s DAU explainer, published June 9, 2026, likewise emphasizes deciding what “user” and “action” mean for the product.
For a crypto app, a team might report a broad activity measure and a narrower core-action measure. Possible tracked events include app open, wallet creation or import, asset view, receive or send flow initiation, and completed transaction. These are examples for a tracking plan, not a claim that any particular app records them. A background refresh or automated event may be useful operationally, but it should not count as meaningful user activity unless that is explicitly the metric’s purpose.

- Specify the identity rule used to deduplicate activity across devices, accounts, or wallets.
- State the daily interval and timezone; calendar-day and rolling-window definitions need not produce the same count.
- If both broad reach and core product use matter, publish them as separate measures with separate definitions.
Build a cohort-retention measure readers can interpret
A retention figure needs two event definitions: what puts someone into the cohort and what qualifies as a return. An acquisition cohort may group users by the period of first use. A behavioral cohort may group users who share an action or property. Amplitude explains entry cohorts and chart methods in its retention interpretation guide; its retention FAQ distinguishes the return conditions.
Choose the starting event
Possible starts include first app use, account creation, wallet setup, or a first successful transaction. These represent different stages of user commitment. Comparing one cohort defined by first app use with another defined by first transaction can make the latter look more retained simply because users had to reach a later milestone to enter it. Label the start event and keep it consistent when comparing cohorts.

Choose the return event
A return to view a balance answers a different question from completing a transaction. Choose the event that represents the behavior being evaluated, and avoid silently switching it between reports. For example, a product team could track return visits separately from repeat successful transactions rather than treating them as interchangeable signs of retention.

Choose the retention method and time basis
“Return On” counts users who perform the return event in a particular interval. “Return On or After” counts users who perform it in that interval or later, so a user who misses an earlier interval may still qualify in a later one. The Amplitude FAQ describes this distinction. A strict calendar date is also different from a rolling 24-hour window; timezone and window behavior can affect which interval receives an event. See Amplitude’s guide to time in retention analysis.

When reporting a cohort result, identify the start event, return event, cohort period, interval basis, timezone, and whether the chart uses “Return On” or “Return On or After.” Without these, two figures both labeled “week 2 retention” may not be comparable.

In-app wallet analytics can track product events such as setting up a wallet, viewing an asset, starting a transfer, or completing an in-app transaction flow. On-chain analysis instead observes blockchain activity, often associated with addresses and transactions. An address may be shared, controlled by one person alongside other addresses, or used without an identifiable visit to the app being measured.

Research applying cohort analysis to Bitcoin blockchain data demonstrates that cohorts can be constructed from blockchain observations; it does not make those observations equivalent to app-user retention. The paper, “Deciphering Bitcoin Blockchain Data by Cohort Analysis” (2021), concerns blockchain data. Amplitude describes its product analytics as event-based in its overview. Together, these illustrate why app events and chain events should be reported as distinct series unless a valid, privacy-conscious identity method connects them.

- State its unit: users, addresses, sessions, transactions, or another clearly defined count.
- Document identity resolution, deduplication, and the treatment of multiple devices, accounts, or wallets.
- Do not describe address or transaction activity as app retention without a defensible link to identifiable app users.
Use the metrics together without conflating them
DAU is useful for the scale of activity in a day. Retention adds the time dimension by showing whether a defined starting group returns. Wallet activity can add product-specific or blockchain context, provided its unit is clear. A crypto app can therefore see DAU rise while retention remains weak—for example, if new-user acquisition grows while relatively few users return. The DAU count alone cannot distinguish that pattern.
For useful comparisons, hold the event definitions and cohort rules steady, then segment only groups that are sufficiently defined. Acquisition channel, onboarding path, geography, or wallet setup can be informative cuts, but a comparison is difficult to interpret if groups have different instrumentation or materially different cohort-entry rules.
Are there crypto-app retention benchmarks?
The cited sources explain measurement methods, but they do not establish a current, representative crypto-app retention benchmark. Example percentages shown in an analytics chart guide are illustrative data, not an industry norm. Avoid presenting a generic percentage as the expected retention rate for crypto apps; compare consistently defined cohorts within the product and disclose the event, interval, and identity rules behind each figure.
