To descale an electric kettle, use the vinegar, citric-acid or descaler method specified in its manual, then empty the solution and rinse the kettle thoroughly. The amount, whether to heat the solution and how long to leave it vary by model, so do not combine instructions from different brands.

What mineral buildup is—and when to descale

Limescale forms as water is heated. It is primarily calcium carbonate and often looks like a light-colored, chalky deposit. How quickly it accumulates depends on the mineral content of your water. Deposits can also look brown or black in areas with high iron, so color alone does not establish that residue is dirt or rust.

Use your kettle’s manual to choose a descaling method. Manufacturers specify different concentrations, heating steps and soak times; the procedures below are examples for the named guidance, not interchangeable recipes.

How to descale a kettle with vinegar or citric acid

Use the method in your kettle’s manual

Check the manual for the kettle model before adding anything. If it permits vinegar or citric acid, follow its stated quantity, temperature and waiting time exactly. Do not assume a method approved for one brand or model is suitable for another.

Example: Tefal instructions for the KI280D27

For the cited Tefal ELEMENT KETTLE KI280D27 guidance, the vinegar option is 500 ml of commercial 8° white vinegar, left in the kettle for one hour without heating. The citric-acid option is to boil 500 ml of water, add 25 g of citric acid, and leave the mixture for 15 minutes. These are model-specific directions.

After either treatment, empty the kettle and rinse it five or six times. Repeat the descaling process if needed, following the product guidance.

Example: Fellow kettle instructions

For Fellow electric kettles, Fellow advises heating a solution of half vinegar and half water to a boil, then leaving it for at least half an hour before emptying and rinsing thoroughly. Its citric-acid option uses 500 ml of water and two spoonfuls of citric acid; bring the solution to a boil, leave it for at least half an hour, then empty and rinse thoroughly. The instructions do not specify the spoon size, so consult the product guidance rather than converting this into an assumed weight.

Fellow notes that citric acid leaves less lingering scent than vinegar. That is a scent difference, not evidence that one method is universally safer or more effective. See Fellow’s cleaning and descaling guidance for its kettle-specific directions.

What to do after descaling

  • Empty the used solution and rinse the kettle as directed by its manufacturer. For the cited Tefal procedure, rinse five or six times.
  • Keep the kettle, electrical base, cord and plug out of water. Tefal specifically warns not to immerse them.
  • Avoid steel wool and abrasive brushes, which Fellow warns can damage the interior surface. Use a sponge or soft brush only if the manual allows it.
  • If the manual calls for a fresh-water boil or another rinse step, follow that instruction. De’Longhi’s cited vinegar guidance calls for boiling and discarding fresh water twice after treatment.

How often to descale

Descale based on water hardness and your kettle’s instructions, rather than following a universal calendar. De’Longhi recommends monthly descaling in particularly hard-water areas and every three months in very soft-water areas. Those intervals are its guidance, not a rule for every kettle; check the manual for your model. See De’Longhi’s kettle descaling FAQ for its advice and vinegar alternative.

Can you use a purpose-made kettle descaler?

A commercial descaler is an option when the kettle manufacturer permits it. Check both the kettle manual and the descaler label for compatibility, quantity, treatment time and rinsing directions. De’Longhi cautions that proprietary descaler can damage the surface finish if its directions are not followed. Do not substitute a product’s directions for the appliance instructions.
