The reliable deployment pattern is to keep CherryPy on a private local listener, expose Nginx on the public address, and have Nginx forward dynamic requests to CherryPy. Nginx can also serve static files and distribute traffic between multiple CherryPy processes. Configure forwarded headers on Nginx and CherryPy’s proxy tool so the application sees the public host and original client address rather than the proxy’s address.

How the deployment is arranged
A browser connects to Nginx, not directly to CherryPy. Nginx terminates the public HTTP connection, selects an application process from an upstream group, and forwards the request with the headers CherryPy needs to reconstruct the original request context.

The basic request path is:
- The client requests the public hostname, such as
www.example.com. - Nginx accepts the connection on its public listener.
- Nginx serves a matching static file itself when the URL begins with
/static/. - For other paths, Nginx sends the request to CherryPy on a private address such as
127.0.0.1:8080. - CherryPy generates the response, and Nginx returns it to the client.
CherryPy’s own HTTP server is documented as production-ready, so using a local CherryPy listener is a supported baseline. uWSGI is an optional WSGI process model, not a requirement for putting CherryPy behind Nginx.
Choose the application process model first
Nginx must proxy to the protocol and endpoint that actually exist. Decide whether CherryPy will expose its own HTTP server or whether a WSGI server will expose the application before writing proxy_pass.

| Model | What listens locally | Nginx target | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct CherryPy | CherryPy HTTP server on an address such as 127.0.0.1:8080 |
http://127.0.0.1:8080 or an upstream containing that server |
The simplest supported arrangement when the application already runs correctly with CherryPy’s server |
| CherryPy through uWSGI | uWSGI exposing a local HTTP endpoint, for example 127.0.0.1:8080 |
An HTTP proxy_pass target matching that endpoint |
A WSGI-oriented process model with CherryPy’s built-in HTTP server disabled |
Do not run both models on the same port. If you switch from direct CherryPy to uWSGI, change the process configuration and verify that Nginx still points to the endpoint and protocol uWSGI exposes.
Prepare CherryPy to listen privately
Set the listener in CherryPy’s global server configuration. A minimal direct-server application can look like this:

"server.socket_port": 8080,
"tools.proxy.on": True,
"tools.proxy.base": "http://www.example.com",
})
cherrypy.quickstart(Root())
Why bind to 127.0.0.1?
Binding to the loopback address keeps the application port off the public network. Nginx, running on the same host, can reach it, while external clients must use the public Nginx listener. If CherryPy and Nginx are on different hosts, use a private network address and restrict that port with the host firewall; do not expose an unprotected application listener unnecessarily.
Set the proxy tool and base URL
tools.proxy.on tells CherryPy to use proxy-provided request information when determining the client address and URL context. Set tools.proxy.base to the public URL represented by the Nginx server. The example uses http://www.example.com; if the public site is HTTPS, use the public HTTPS scheme and hostname used by clients.
The base must correspond to the public name in Nginx’s server_name. A mismatch can produce redirects, absolute links, or generated URLs pointing at an internal address or the wrong hostname.

Verify CherryPy before adding Nginx
Test the application’s private endpoint first. This separates application failures from proxy configuration failures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Start the CherryPy process with the selected configuration.
- From the server, request the local address and port, for example
http://127.0.0.1:8080/. - Confirm that the expected response is returned and that the CherryPy log shows the request.
- If the local request fails, fix the application, listener address, port, or process permissions before editing Nginx.
A successful local response proves only that CherryPy is reachable locally. It does not yet verify host headers, forwarded client addresses, static-file mapping, public DNS, TLS, or Nginx routing.
Configure Nginx as the reverse proxy
Create a server configuration under the Nginx configuration directory. On Ubuntu, the CherryPy deployment documentation places the adapted file under /etc/nginx/conf.d/. Use the path appropriate to your distribution and existing Nginx layout.
upstream apps {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.example.com;
location ^~ /static/ {
root /app/static/;
}
location / {
proxy_pass http://apps;
proxy_redirect off;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $server_name;
}
}
What each part does
upstream apps: Names the group of application endpoints that Nginx can use. The name is local to the configuration; it does not need to match the hostname.server 127.0.0.1:8080andserver 127.0.0.1:8081: Identify two CherryPy instances. Remove the second entry when you operate only one process, or add further instances deliberately.listen 80: Accepts plain HTTP on port 80 in this baseline. TLS termination and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects require additional server configuration based on your certificate and policy.server_name: Selects the public hostname and should match the hostname used by CherryPy’s proxy base setting.location ^~ /static/: Gives static URLs to Nginx instead of sending them through the application.proxy_pass http://apps: Forwards all other paths to the upstream group. The scheme is HTTP because the example upstreams expose HTTP endpoints.proxy_redirect off: Prevents Nginx from rewriting redirect locations automatically in this baseline.- Forwarded headers: Preserve the public host, immediate client address, accumulated proxy chain, and public host name for the application.
Static-file path mapping needs verification
The documented example uses root /app/static/ for the /static/ location. Treat that path as an example, not a universal filesystem layout. Nginx combines the location and URI with the root according to its normal path rules, so verify exactly which filesystem path a request such as /static/site.css resolves to. Confirm that the directory exists, the Nginx worker can read it, and the URL-to-file mapping matches your application’s generated static URLs.
If the mapping is wrong, a static request may return 404 while dynamic routes continue to work. Test static URLs separately rather than assuming a successful homepage request proves the static location is correct.

Forward the correct request metadata
A reverse proxy changes what the upstream process sees unless the relevant headers are explicitly forwarded.
| Header | Value in the baseline | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
Host |
$host |
Preserves the hostname selected by the client and Nginx server block. |
X-Real-IP |
$remote_addr |
Passes the address of the immediate client connection to Nginx. |
X-Forwarded-For |
$proxy_add_x_forwarded_for |
Appends the current client address to an existing forwarding chain. |
X-Forwarded-Host |
$server_name |
Communicates the public server name selected by Nginx. |
Inspect application logs after making a public request. The logged host should be the public hostname, and the client address should reflect the forwarded value rather than only the loopback address. Trust forwarded headers only from proxies you control; accepting arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers at a public edge can make address-based access controls unreliable.
Validate and activate the Nginx configuration
- Save the adapted server file in the location loaded by your Nginx installation.
- Run the platform’s Nginx configuration test command (commonly
nginx -t) and resolve every syntax or path error it reports. - Reload Nginx using the service manager or command appropriate to the host. A reload applies the new configuration without unnecessarily stopping existing workers.
- Request the public hostname and confirm that the response comes from CherryPy.
- Check Nginx and CherryPy logs for the forwarded host, client address, selected route, and any upstream connection error.
Test the public dynamic route and a representative /static/ asset independently. A dynamic success with a static failure usually points to the location or filesystem mapping, while a static success with a dynamic failure points to the upstream address, protocol, or application process.
Run more than one CherryPy instance
Putting multiple servers in one upstream gives Nginx a simple scale-out path. In the documented example, ports 8080 and 8081 represent separate CherryPy instances:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →upstream apps {
server 127.0.0.1:8080;
server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}
Nginx distributes requests among the listed upstream servers using its upstream balancing behavior. Each instance must serve the same application contract: compatible code, configuration, sessions, static assumptions, and access to any shared data the application requires.

Operational check for a two-instance setup
- Start both instances and confirm that each local port responds independently.
- Send requests through the public hostname and verify that both processes receive traffic in their logs.
- Stop one instance temporarily and make another public request.
- Confirm that the behavior matches your availability expectation and that Nginx reports any upstream failure clearly.
- Restart the stopped instance and verify that it rejoins only after its local endpoint is healthy.
Multiple entries are not a substitute for application-level health design. The baseline configuration does not prescribe universal health-check, retry, session, or failover values; choose those according to how the application handles state and failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use uWSGI when you need a WSGI process model
For a WSGI deployment, the official CherryPy example creates a WSGI callable, disables CherryPy’s built-in HTTP server, starts the CherryPy engine, and runs uWSGI on a local HTTP endpoint. The command shown in that example is:
uwsgi --socket 127.0.0.1:8080 --protocol=http --wsgi-file mymod.py --callable wsgiapp
Here, --protocol=http matters: uWSGI is exposing an HTTP-speaking endpoint, so Nginx can use an HTTP proxy_pass target. If you choose another uWSGI protocol or socket arrangement, the Nginx connection method must match it; do not copy an HTTP proxy stanza onto a non-HTTP socket without the appropriate Nginx integration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWith this model, CherryPy should not also bind its built-in HTTP server to the same port. Keep the application callable and process startup configuration explicit, then verify the local uWSGI endpoint before pointing Nginx at it.
Features that require deliberate additions
The baseline is intentionally small. Add edge behavior only after identifying an actual application requirement.
Best Value
TLS termination
The sample listens on port 80 and contains no certificate configuration. If Nginx terminates TLS, configure the certificate, private key, HTTPS listener, and any HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect appropriate to your deployment. Ensure CherryPy’s proxy base reflects the public scheme so generated absolute URLs do not downgrade to HTTP.
Timeouts and buffering
Long-running requests, streaming responses, uploads, and large downloads may need proxy timeout or buffering decisions. The cited baseline does not prescribe universal values. Set them from the application’s actual request behavior and test failure cases rather than copying arbitrary numbers.
WebSockets
CherryPy’s advanced documentation states that WebSocket support comes from the external ws4py library. A WebSocket deployment therefore needs explicit end-to-end upgrade handling in Nginx and the application, in addition to the ordinary HTTP proxy configuration. A normal HTTP response does not prove that a WebSocket handshake or long-lived connection will work.
Access control and headers
Authentication gates, rate limits, request-size limits, security headers, and network access controls should be designed for the application and threat model. The four forwarding headers in the baseline solve request-context propagation; they are not an access-control policy.
Troubleshoot by following the request path
| Symptom | Likely area | Checks |
|---|---|---|
| CherryPy fails on the local port | Application process or listener | Check startup output, global server settings, bind address, port ownership, and local request results. |
| Nginx returns a gateway or upstream error | Upstream connectivity | Confirm the configured port is listening, the protocol matches, and local firewall rules permit Nginx to connect. |
| The public request reaches the wrong virtual host | Hostname selection | Check DNS, the request hostname, and the matching server_name. |
| Redirects point to an internal host or wrong scheme | Proxy metadata | Check Host, X-Forwarded-Host, CherryPy’s proxy tool, and the proxy base scheme and hostname. |
| Logs show only the proxy address | Forwarded client metadata | Confirm the X-Real-IP and X-Forwarded-For directives and that the application proxy tool is enabled. |
| Dynamic routes work but static files return 404 | Static location | Check the /static/ root mapping, URL spelling, file existence, and Nginx read permissions. |
| One of two instances receives no requests | Process or upstream configuration | Request each local endpoint directly, inspect both logs, and verify that the upstream entries use the intended addresses and ports. |
| WebSocket connections fail while HTTP works | Upgrade handling | Verify the WebSocket library, Nginx upgrade directives, idle timeouts, and the complete handshake path. |
Deployment checklist
- Choose direct CherryPy or a WSGI/uWSGI process model; do not bind competing servers to one port.
- Bind the application to a private address and record the exact port or socket.
- Confirm CherryPy responds locally before introducing Nginx.
- Create an Nginx upstream whose members match the running application endpoints.
- Set the public
server_nameand adapt the static-file location to the real filesystem layout. - Use
proxy_passwith a scheme and endpoint compatible with the selected process model. - Forward
Host,X-Real-IP,X-Forwarded-For, andX-Forwarded-Host. - Enable CherryPy’s proxy tool and set its base to the public hostname and scheme when proxy-aware URLs or client metadata are needed.
- Test the Nginx configuration, reload it, and inspect both Nginx and application logs.
- Test dynamic routes, static assets, redirects, and (if applicable) WebSocket upgrades separately.
- For multiple instances, verify each local endpoint and perform a controlled single-instance stop test.
- Add TLS, timeout, buffering, access-control, and health behavior only after defining the application’s requirements.
Final architecture decision
For most deployments, start with CherryPy’s own HTTP server on a loopback port and a single Nginx upstream member. This gives a clear, testable path with minimal moving parts. Add a second CherryPy instance when you have a reason to distribute requests, and adopt uWSGI when its WSGI process model fits your operational requirements. In every case, the dependable rule is the same: Nginx’s proxy_pass must point to the endpoint that is actually running, while CherryPy must be told which public host and forwarded client information represent the outside request.
