Yes, technically. A VPS can run WireGuard or OpenVPN, and you can either route a torrent client on your own computer through that VPS or run the torrent client directly on the VPS. The decisive question is permission: a provider may allow VPN software while banning torrent clients and other peer-to-peer traffic. Copyright law and the provider’s acceptable-use policy still apply, and a VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity.

What this setup actually does
Use the VPS as a VPN gateway
In this design, the VPS runs WireGuard or OpenVPN as a server. Your home computer, NAS, or another device connects as the VPN client. You then configure the torrent application to use the tunnel, so the VPS supplies the public-facing IP address while the torrent data remains on your local device.

The VPS is acting as an egress router, not as a storage server. Your home connection still supplies the disk space and most of the torrent client’s CPU work. The VPS consumes transfer capacity and is exposed to complaints about traffic that passes through your account.
Run the torrent client on the VPS
Alternatively, install qBittorrent or another client on the VPS and store downloads there. This is commonly called a seedbox-style arrangement. It can stay online when your personal computer is off, but the VPS now needs enough disk space, transfer allowance, CPU, and inbound connectivity for downloading and seeding. You also assume responsibility for securing the server, managing files, and responding to abuse notices.

These models have different failure modes. A gateway can leak traffic from a local client if its interface binding or firewall is wrong. A torrent host can exhaust storage or bandwidth and can generate a direct complaint against the server’s IP address. Neither model is acceptable when the provider’s rules prohibit the activity.
Provider policy is the gatekeeper
Do not infer that torrenting is allowed merely because a host gives you root access or permits a private VPN. Read the current acceptable-use policy, P2P wording, bandwidth limits, abuse procedure, and suspension terms for the exact service and location you intend to use. Policies can change after you deploy.

FASTVPS states that “hosting of torrent clients and trackers, as well as other p2p file exchange services” and other high-bandwidth services is prohibited on VPS. That wording covers a torrent daemon running on the server, not merely an isolated private VPN connection.
DigitalOcean’s policy places responsibility on the customer for traffic from a Droplet and warns that, if prohibited traffic such as torrents cannot be stopped, the account may be suspended or terminated. Linode likewise requires authorization for copyrighted works and reserves the right to suspend or terminate service. A policy that permits P2P does not grant permission to distribute material you do not have the right to share.

Questions to answer before deployment
- Does the policy explicitly permit BitTorrent, P2P, seedboxes, or torrent clients, rather than only saying that VPN software is allowed?
- Are public VPN endpoints, commercial VPN services, trackers, or mirrors treated differently from a private personal tunnel?
- Are there transfer, connection-count, storage, or inbound-port limits that make seeding impractical?
- What notice and response period applies to copyright complaints, and can the provider immediately suspend the VPS?
- Which country’s law and dispute process apply to the server location and your account?
What the VPN hides—and what it does not
When the tunnel is working correctly, peers in a torrent swarm normally see the VPS or VPN server’s public IP instead of your home connection’s IP. Your internet provider sees an encrypted connection to the VPS rather than the individual torrent peers. That is a routing and exposure change, not a promise of anonymity.
The VPS operator can still associate traffic with your account, observe connection metadata according to its systems and policies, and act on abuse reports. Your VPN credentials, server logs, payment records, browser activity, and mistakes outside the tunnel can also identify you. A VPN does not legalize copyright infringement, prevent a provider from terminating service, or protect against malicious files.
DigitalOcean prohibits unlawful and intellectual-property-infringing use. Linode’s authorization requirement for copyrighted works makes the same principle explicit. Only download or seed material you are legally entitled to handle, and keep records of that authorization when appropriate.
Choose the deployment model that fits your risk

If you only need your home client to use a different egress IP, the gateway model avoids moving large files to the VPS. If you need an always-on downloader, the VPS-hosted model supplies that convenience at the cost of greater resource use and policy exposure.

Prerequisites and safeguards
- Written permission: Save the provider’s current AUP and the support response if the wording is ambiguous.
- Supported operating system: Use a currently maintained Linux distribution and keep the kernel, WireGuard or OpenVPN, torrent client, and firewall packages patched.
- Resource headroom: Estimate peak transfer, active connections, download size, seeding duration, and required disk before selecting the VPS. A one-time promotional allowance or an unmetered label may not cover sustained seeding.
- Network controls: Plan rules for the tunnel interface, the ordinary network interface, DNS, and IPv6. IPv6 must be filtered or routed deliberately; protecting only IPv4 can still expose a peer connection.
- Administrative access: Use key-based server access, disable unnecessary services, restrict management ports, and keep an abuse contact monitored.
- Legal content: Confirm that every torrent is lawful in your jurisdiction and that you have permission to redistribute any files you seed.
Configure a VPS as a VPN gateway
The exact server commands differ by Linux distribution and by whether you choose WireGuard or OpenVPN, but the deployment sequence is consistent.
- Confirm the policy and provision the server. Select a maintained image, a region appropriate for your legal and latency requirements, and enough transfer capacity for the expected traffic. Do not install a torrent service until P2P permission is clear.
- Install and harden the VPN server. Generate server and client keys or certificates, enable forwarding, and create a client profile that routes the traffic you intend to protect. Restrict the VPN listener and administrative access with the host firewall.
- Connect one test device. Verify that the tunnel receives an address, that DNS resolves through the intended path, and that ordinary web traffic stops when the VPN is disconnected if your design requires a full kill switch.
- Bind the torrent application to the tunnel. In qBittorrent, open Tools → Options → Advanced and set Network Interface to the WireGuard interface (often named
wg0) or the OpenVPN tunnel interface (oftentun0). Do not leave it on Any interface when leak prevention matters. Proton’s documentation specifically warns that choosing the normal interface can expose the connection. - Enforce the firewall boundary. Permit torrent traffic only through the VPN interface and block the ordinary interface for the torrent process or host. Add equivalent IPv6 rules, or disable IPv6 only if you understand the consequences for the rest of the system. The goal is that a VPN drop stops torrent traffic rather than sending it over the home link.
- Test failure, not just success. Start a legal download, record the observed public address, stop the VPN, and confirm that the torrent client loses connectivity. Restart the client and the VPS to ensure the binding and firewall rules persist.
- Monitor and respond. Watch disk, transfer, connection counts, system updates, and provider notices. Stop the relevant service immediately if a complaint arrives while you investigate the content and the policy.
Binding the application is stronger than relying on a browser-wide VPN switch: it limits the torrent process itself. A kill switch is still necessary because a misconfigured route, an IPv6 path, or a service restart can bypass an otherwise correct interface selection.

Install the client as a least-privileged service and place incomplete and completed data on a volume sized for the largest expected workload. Separate the operating-system disk from download storage when possible so a full torrent directory cannot prevent the server from booting or accepting administrative access.
Restrict the client’s web interface to the VPN or a trusted management network, use a strong password, and avoid exposing administrative panels to the public internet. Set seeding ratios or time limits that match the provider’s transfer allowance. Keep a recovery copy of important legal data; a provider can suspend or destroy a VPS after an unresolved abuse event.

A torrent daemon on the VPS also needs a deliberate startup order: the VPN should establish before the daemon begins accepting peers. Combine service dependencies with firewall rules so a reboot cannot briefly expose the ordinary VPS address.

Incoming connections can improve peer reachability, but they are not required for every torrent to work. Port forwarding is controlled by the VPN service or VPS network, not by qBittorrent alone. Proton VPN describes it as mainly useful for peer-to-peer applications, requires a P2P server, and supports setup with OpenVPN or WireGuard configuration files.
If forwarding is offered, configure the assigned port in both the VPN profile and the torrent client, then allow only that port through the VPS firewall. The forwarded number may change when the VPN reconnects, so a static value in qBittorrent can become invalid. Never assume that opening an arbitrary VPS port creates forwarding through an upstream VPN; the provider must route it to your session.
Forwarding changes reachability, not legality or anonymity. It can also increase unsolicited traffic, so close the port when the client is stopped and review connection limits.
Common failures and how to correct them

A managed P2P VPN may be simpler
A managed service removes VPS patching, routing, and abuse-response work. Proton VPN documents dedicated P2P servers, qBittorrent interface binding, and port forwarding through OpenVPN or WireGuard profiles. You still need to bind the client, use lawful content, and read the service’s current P2P and logging terms, but you do not administer a public server or maintain its operating system.

A managed P2P VPN is generally the lower-maintenance choice when the only requirement is torrent-capable routing.
Pre-deployment decision checklist
- The provider’s current policy explicitly covers your intended model: gateway, torrent client, seedbox, or seeding.
- You know whether the VPS or VPN supplies inbound port forwarding and whether the port is stable.
- The torrent client is bound to the tunnel interface rather than Any interface.
- Firewall rules stop torrent traffic on VPN failure and account for IPv6.
- Disk, transfer, CPU, and connection limits are monitored with room for growth.
- You can answer abuse notices quickly and can stop the service without losing access to the server.
- Every download and seed is authorized under the law that applies to you and the server location.
A VPS can therefore carry VPN and torrent traffic reliably, but only a policy-confirmed, leak-tested configuration is suitable for sustained use. Technical feasibility is the easy part; permission, lawful content, isolation, and operational response determine whether the setup is acceptable.
