Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Agentic AI has turned web scraping from a fixed script into an adaptive operation that can browse, plan, authenticate, retry failed steps and complete transactions. That change matters because the same browser control that helps a shopping assistant can discover products, probe account flows or automate fraud at machine speed. Blocking anything that looks automated is no longer a reliable defense: legitimate and malicious automation can appear almost identical at the network layer.
The practical answer is to evaluate intent continuously. Combine adaptive identity, endpoint-specific rate and transaction controls, real-time behavior telemetry, strict tool privileges and human approval for sensitive actions. The scale of the problem makes that architecture urgent.

| Finding | Scope and date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 53% of internet traffic was bot traffic; 40% was classified as bad bots | Thales dataset for 2025 | Automated requests now outnumber human requests in the measured population. |
| 17.2 trillion bot requests blocked | Thales, 2025 | Blocking volume is enormous even before an organization counts requests that evade its controls. |
| AI-enabled bot attacks increased 12.5 times year over year | Thales, 2026 report | Attack growth is outpacing the assumptions behind static rules. |
| Scraping was 70.9% of bad-bot traffic and rose 185.2% | DataDome study, July 2025–June 2026 | Content and catalog extraction remains the dominant abuse case. |
| 52.7 billion AI-agent and large-language-model crawler requests detected | DataDome customer telemetry, same study period | AI-specific traffic is already measurable at global scale. |
| Only 2.4% of more than 20,000 tested websites achieved full protection | DataDome assessment, 2026 | Most sites have gaps across at least one bot type or workflow. |
| AI-driven traffic grew 187% | HUMAN Security, January–December 2025 | Growth is occurring within a single calendar year, not over a decade. |
| Agentic AI and agentic-browser traffic grew 7,851% year over year | HUMAN Security, 2026 | The agentic subset is still smaller than all automation, but its trajectory is extreme. |
HUMAN found that more than 95% of AI-driven traffic was concentrated in retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and travel and hospitality. The median share of traffic attempting a scraping attack approached 20% globally in 2025. DataDome also recorded AI-agent requests to login pages rising from 11.9 million in January 2026 to 99.7 million in June 2026 across its customer sites. Those requests are not merely reading public pages; they are reaching identity and account boundaries.

What makes an agentic scraper different
A traditional scraper follows a predetermined sequence: request a URL, parse a known element, follow a link and repeat. An agentic system adds a language model or planner, browser and API tools, memory and feedback. It can decide what to fetch next, change tactics when a page changes, fill a form, sign in with supplied credentials and continue toward a goal.
The autonomous loop
- Observe: the agent reads page text, structure, network responses or screenshots.
- Plan: it selects the next action, such as searching a catalog, opening an account page or calling an API.
- Act: a browser, HTTP client or tool performs the action.
- Evaluate: the agent checks whether the result matches its goal.
- Retry or pivot: it changes selectors, pacing, navigation or authentication when blocked.
- Remember: useful tokens, page patterns and outcomes can be retained for later sessions.
This loop lowers the cost of maintaining abuse. A site redesign that would break a rigid script may only require an agent to inspect the new layout and choose another path. The same capabilities can support legitimate price comparison or accessibility tools, which is why a simple bot-versus-human label cannot establish intent.
Where agents are operating on a site
HUMAN measured 77% of agentic activity on product and search pages, 8.8% on account pages, 5% on authentication flows and 2.3% on checkout pages. The percentages describe its observed traffic, not a universal distribution, but they show that discovery pages are the largest entry point while identity and payment workflows are high-value targets.

Why familiar defenses are insufficient
IP blocks and fingerprints
IP reputation, velocity, TLS characteristics, browser fingerprints and JavaScript checks are useful signals, but agents can distribute requests, use ordinary browsers, vary timing and acquire fresh identities. A rule that blocks every fast product search will also block a legitimate accessibility service or a customer using an automated purchasing assistant.
CAPTCHAs
CAPTCHAs add friction at selected checkpoints; they do not govern every subsequent API call, session or business-logic action. An attacker can rotate identities, solve challenges through human or automated services, or avoid the challenged path entirely. Treat a passed CAPTCHA as one signal in a risk decision, not proof of benevolent intent.
robots.txt
robots.txt is an advisory convention for crawlers. The MIT AI Agent Index notes that autonomous browser agents often operate in third-party environments without a negotiated trust channel. An agent can ignore the file, use a general browser rather than a declared crawler identity, or access content through an API and account session. Publish clear policy for cooperative crawlers, but enforce protection at the edge and application layers.

The binary classification problem
DataDome’s formulation is the useful operational test: “The key question is no longer, ‘Is this a bot or a human?’ It is: ‘What is this visitor trying to do, and is it beneficial to the business?’” HUMAN reported that benign and malicious automation rates differed by only one-half of one percent across its interactions. A binary rule therefore creates false positives precisely where useful automation is growing.

Agent-specific security failures
Agentic browsing introduces risks beyond scraping volume. A system may read untrusted page content and then use its privileges to take an action that the page effectively instructed it to perform.
Prompt injection and cross-origin theft
A University of Washington study evaluated Brave Leo, ChatGPT Atlas, Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome, Microsoft Edge with Copilot, Firefox AI Mode and Perplexity Comet. It demonstrated a successful cross-origin data-theft attack on ChatGPT Atlas in Agent Mode when prompt injection succeeded. The study also found preconditions in Chrome with Gemini, Claude for Chrome and Perplexity Comet if an injection is accepted. The lesson is architectural: browsing content must not gain authority merely because an agent can read it.

Privilege and trust-boundary failures
A 2026 Google survey of 71 papers and three production CVEs identified a recurring structural failure: untrusted content receives authority it was never granted across input, external-data, tool and protocol, memory, and multi-agent layers. A poisoned document can influence a plan; a compromised extension can expose a session; contaminated memory can carry an attacker’s instruction into a later task.
From assisted research to autonomous attack
Google Cloud Mandiant observed threat actors moving from AI-assisted research to autonomous orchestration that includes reconnaissance, vulnerability validation and credential harvesting. This progression shortens the time between finding a target and testing an exploit, so defensive telemetry and response need to operate in near real time.

1. Establish an intent-aware risk signal
Score behavior over a session rather than deciding from one request. Useful features include navigation sequence, account age, authentication outcomes, inventory enumeration, pagination depth, API-to-page ratios, checkout attempts, concurrency and response to friction. Keep the score explainable enough for analysts to investigate and tune.

2. Apply controls at each workflow
- Set separate rate, concurrency and quota policies for search, catalog, account, authentication, cart, checkout and APIs.
- Require stronger verification when behavior shifts from reading to account changes, payment or bulk export.
- Use short-lived tokens, replay protection and server-side authorization for every state-changing action.
- Do not assume a browser session is trustworthy because its initial page passed a challenge.
3. Build adaptive identity
Google Cloud Mandiant recommends adaptive identity controls for autonomous threats. Bind risk decisions to the user, device and session context, then step up verification when those signals diverge. Prefer graduated responses—observe, slow, limit, challenge, require approval and block—over a single deny rule.
4. Isolate agent tools and browsers
- Run browser sessions in isolated containers or profiles with no access to unrelated cookies, files or internal network services.
- Grant each tool the minimum scopes and domains required for its task.
- Separate read-only retrieval from actions that send messages, change accounts, place orders or move money.
- Require explicit user or operator approval before sensitive actions.
- Treat webpage text, retrieved documents, extensions, plug-ins and agent skills as untrusted input.
5. Instrument the whole path
Collect correlated telemetry from CDN or edge, API gateway, application, identity provider and transaction systems. Record an agent’s declared identity when available, but verify it against observed behavior. Preserve request chains, tool calls, authentication events and policy decisions so investigators can distinguish a crawler from an account takeover attempt.
6. Test continuously
Run authorized tests for prompt injection, cross-origin access, memory poisoning, tool overreach, credential replay and business-logic abuse. Re-test after model, browser, extension, API or checkout changes. Publish a clear internal owner for each control and a response time for high-confidence attacks.
How to implement the program in phases
- Inventory: map public pages, APIs, login, recovery, account, cart, checkout and administrative workflows. Identify which actions have financial, privacy or operational impact.
- Measure: baseline human, cooperative crawler, AI crawler, agentic-browser and suspicious automation patterns. Track request volume, challenged sessions, successful logins, exports and transaction outcomes.
- Protect: deploy endpoint-specific limits and graduated responses at the edge and API gateway, then add server-side transaction authorization.
- Contain: isolate agent execution, reduce tool scopes, expire credentials quickly and block cross-origin data access by default.
- Validate: conduct injection and abuse simulations, review false positives with product teams and tune policies using observed outcomes.
- Respond: prepare playbooks for scraping spikes, credential stuffing, account takeover, inventory hoarding and suspected agent data theft. Include token revocation, session termination, evidence retention and customer notification decisions.
Choosing a bot- and agent-security service
When evaluating a platform or managed service, compare the following capabilities rather than relying on a generic “bot protection” label:
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Does it protect browser pages, APIs and business-logic actions, or only edge requests? |
| Behavior and intent | Can it model session sequences and transaction intent, and explain why a session was challenged? |
| AI visibility | Can it identify cooperative crawlers, LLM crawlers and agentic browsers without trusting self-declared labels? |
| Workflow controls | Are login, checkout, account recovery and account takeover policies independently configurable? |
| False-positive handling | Can legitimate automation receive a lower-friction path based on verified identity and behavior? |
| Deployment | Can controls run at CDN, edge, API gateway and application layers with consistent policy? |
| Telemetry | Does the product provide searchable session trails, policy decisions, exports and investigation workflows? |
| Evidence | Are independent tests, published methodology and performance limitations available? |
What success should look like
Success is not eliminating every automated request. A defensible program lets beneficial crawlers and assistants reach the content they are allowed to use, while making high-volume extraction, credential abuse and unauthorized transactions expensive and detectable. Measure reduction in successful abusive outcomes—not only blocked requests—alongside login conversion, checkout completion, support contacts, challenge rates for verified users and time to contain an incident.
Agentic AI is making bot attacks cheaper to create and harder to classify. Organizations that combine intent-aware detection with least-privilege agent architecture, workflow-specific controls and continuous testing can preserve useful automation without granting an autonomous browser more authority than the task requires.
