Decorate in this order: prepare and secure the tree, install and test the lights, add garland or ribbon, place large Spirit ornaments for depth, fill with smaller pieces, and finish with the topper and skirt. This sequence keeps wires accessible, distributes the character designs instead of creating one crowded patch, and lets you judge the finished silhouette with the lights on.
Start with a safe, stable setup
Choose the tree’s final position before opening the ornament boxes. Set it in a sturdy stand on a level surface, well away from radiators, fireplaces, heaters and other heat sources. Keep doors, stairs and other exits clear. A secured tree is less likely to tip when someone reaches for an ornament or when a pet brushes the lower branches.

For an artificial tree, assemble each section according to its instructions and spread the hinged branches. Work around the tree with your hands, separating compressed tips so the finished shape is full rather than cone-like. For a live tree, confirm that it is fresh and keep the stand filled with water. Do not begin decorating until the trunk is firmly seated and the tree does not wobble.
Place a stable step stool or ladder nearby for the top third. Never balance on a chair or stretch so far that you lose contact with the ladder. Put a cloth or shallow tray beside the tree for hooks, spare bulbs and tools; keeping those pieces off the floor reduces trips and makes the sequence easier to follow.

- Check that the tree cannot block an exit, thermostat, vent or frequently used walkway.
- Keep children and pets out of the work area while you test electrical connections and handle hooks.
- Leave enough room behind the tree to reach the outlet without pinching the cord against the stand or wall.
Choose a unified Spirit-themed look
Spirit Christmas assortments combine character ornaments and light-up seasonal décor. Inventory, prices and availability change by season, so plan around the pieces you actually have rather than a fixed catalog. Before hanging anything, lay the ornaments on a table and group them by color, size, weight and whether they light up. This quick sort prevents every novelty design from competing for the same visual spot.
Use five design controls to make licensed or character-heavy pieces read as one tree: color, pattern, texture, luminance and size. Select one or two dominant colors from the Spirit ornaments, then use the remaining colors as accents. Home Depot’s planning examples list approximately 300 mini lights per foot of tree, 100 C6 lights per foot or 100 C9 lights per foot. These are starting figures, not a guarantee: branch density, tree width, bulb spacing and the amount of glow you want can change the required number. Measure the tree and read the light set’s instructions for connectable-string limits and wattage before buying or connecting multiple sets.

Pick a light pattern

Choose one pattern for the whole tree unless a dense lower section genuinely needs a different treatment. Keep the plug and extension arrangement accessible, and never exceed the light set’s stated connection or wattage limits. Plug in a short test before climbing, then test again when the complete run is connected. An unexpected dark segment usually indicates a loose connection or a failed string; unplug it before investigating.
How to place each string
- Lay the unopened strings on the floor and check the labels, indoor rating and maximum number of strings that may be connected.
- Test each string individually. Replace a defective set instead of hiding the fault inside the branches.
- Start at the outlet side and leave enough slack to avoid tension at the plug. If the outlet is behind the tree, route the lead before you begin climbing.
- Place lighted sections at different depths. Let some bulbs sit near the branch tips for visible sparkle and tuck others closer to the trunk to create a warm inner glow.
- Step back after every section or spiral turn. Move a loop when one area is noticeably brighter, a wire is visible from the viewing position, or a dark pocket will later compete with a major ornament.
- Switch the lights off while you finish the daytime placement, then switch them on again for the final adjustment.
Add garland or ribbon as the visual base
After the lights are working, add garland or ribbon. Use broad, even swags rather than forcing a straight horizontal band. A gentle diagonal or vertical movement can lead the eye through the Spirit characters without hiding the brightest light clusters.

Keep enough distance from bulbs and sockets that the ribbon cannot rest against a hot component. If the ribbon is highly reflective or strongly patterned, reduce the number of other shiny elements nearby; the goal is depth, not a second competing focal point.
Walk around the tree from the main viewing angles. Adjust a swag that creates a large empty triangle, covers an electrical connection or obscures the trunk-side glow you deliberately built with branch wrapping.
Hang Spirit ornaments in layers
Use a three-layer placement plan: deep, middle and outer. Large or heavy Spirit pieces can sit partly inside the branches, where the greenery supports them and the inner lights outline their shape. Put selected signature characters on outer tips where they can be recognized. The combination gives the tree depth instead of a flat ring of ornaments around its edge.

Place the largest and heaviest pieces first
- Identify the heaviest ornaments and the pieces with the widest silhouettes.
- Hang them on strong branch junctions, spreading their weight around the tree rather than lining them along one side.
- Place a few large pieces deep inside and reserve the most recognizable designs for the front and side viewing angles.
- Turn the tree a quarter turn and repeat the check. A composition that looks balanced from the sofa can still lean toward a window or wall.
Use ornament hooks sized for the item and close the hook around the branch when appropriate. If a piece has a long hanger, shorten the visual drop only when doing so does not stress the cap or attachment point. Never suspend a heavy ornament from a thin outer tip that bends toward the floor.

Distribute character designs instead of clustering them
Imagine the tree divided into vertical thirds and front, side and back zones. Place a signature Spirit character in one zone, then move to a different color or character before returning to the first. This creates a repeating pattern without making the tree look mechanically symmetrical. Keep the most detailed faces and silhouettes at eye level or slightly above, where branches will not hide them.
Light-up ornaments need breathing room. Do not place several bright pieces shoulder to shoulder unless you intentionally want one focal cluster. Separate them with darker, matte or smaller ornaments so each glow remains legible. If an ornament has its own cord or battery compartment, route and secure that hardware before adding nearby decorations.
Fill gaps with medium and small ornaments
Once the major pieces are stable, fill visible gaps with medium ornaments, then use small pieces to soften abrupt transitions. Repeat the dominant colors from your initial sort. A small red or metallic accent near the top should have an echo lower down; this color rhythm ties unusual Spirit designs to the rest of the tree.
Vary the orientation. Some ornaments should face forward, while others can turn slightly toward the side so the tree rewards movement around it. Avoid placing every round ornament at the same depth. A few tucked behind branch tips make the tree look fuller and let inner lights shine through without adding more decorations.

Keep fragile pieces, detachable parts and small accessories high enough that young children and pets cannot reach them. Health Canada also advises securing the tree, using certified lights, respecting wattage and avoiding overloaded outlets or damaged cords. These precautions matter most on the lower third, where hands, tails and vacuum cleaners are most likely to make contact.
Finish with the topper and base
Add the topper only after the ornament weight is distributed. Check that the top branch or support can carry it without bending and that it does not touch a light socket. A large topper may need to be centered over the trunk rather than perched on a single tip. From across the room, verify that it completes the tree’s outline instead of making one side appear taller.
Place the skirt or other base treatment last. Keep fabric clear of plugs, power strips and the stand’s water reservoir access. The base should hide the stand while leaving enough clearance to inspect the cord and, for a live tree, refill water safely.

Use only lights tested by a recognized laboratory. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises inspecting sockets, wires and connections and discarding damaged strings. Match indoor lights to an indoor tree, respect the product’s wattage and connection limits, and avoid overloaded outlets. Do not use electric lights on a metallic tree.
Keep the decorated tree away from heat sources and exits. NIST guidance says to turn the lights off before bed or before leaving home. Make the switch easy to reach so this becomes a routine rather than a chore that requires moving furniture or climbing.

A dry live tree can ignite quickly. CPSC reporting cites NFPA estimates of 240 dried-Christmas-tree fires, 16 deaths and $13 million in property damage per year. Separate CPSC counts recorded about 11,000 decoration-related emergency-room injuries in the 60 days around the holiday season in 2009 and 12,500 emergency-room-treated holiday-decoration injuries in 2003. Those figures include many kinds of decorations and incidents, but they show why stable placement, sound cords and supervised access are part of decorating—not an afterthought.
- Unplug before replacing a bulb, moving a string or untangling a wire.
- Do not run cords under rugs, through doorways or where they can be crushed by furniture.
- Keep connectors off the floor and away from the tree stand’s water.
- Stop using a string that becomes unusually hot, smells of melting plastic or flickers after connections are tightened.
- Turn lights off before sleeping or leaving, even when the tree is artificial.
Troubleshoot the finished tree
The tree looks bright on the outside but dark inside
Move a portion of the light string toward the trunk and add depth to the existing run rather than simply piling more bulbs on the tips. Branch wrapping is the most direct correction; with a spiral or section pattern, loosen selected loops and route them inward. Reposition ornaments only after the light distribution is even.
One side looks heavier
Remove the largest pieces from the crowded side and redistribute them at similar heights on the opposite side. Check the tree stand and trunk alignment before moving small ornaments; a leaning tree can make a balanced decoration plan appear lopsided.

Character ornaments disappear
Move the piece to an outer branch tip, rotate its face toward the primary viewing position and clear a small pocket of greenery around its silhouette. If another illuminated ornament is washing it out, separate the two rather than adding more light.
A string will not light
Unplug the set, inspect the plug, sockets, wire and connections, then test it by itself. If damage is visible or the fault persists, discard the string. Do not conceal a defective connection behind garland or ornaments.
The top or lower branches sag
Move heavy pieces to stronger branch junctions and use smaller ornaments on thin outer tips. If the tree section itself bends or the stand shifts, remove decorations before correcting the assembly; decoration should never be used to counteract an unstable structure.
Final walk-around checklist
- Tree is stable, fresh and watered when live, and clear of heat sources and exits.
- Lights are safety-tested, undamaged, correctly rated for indoor use and within connection and wattage limits.
- Lighting is even from the main viewing angles, with both inner glow and outer sparkle.
- Garland or ribbon creates depth without covering prominent light clusters or connectors.
- Large Spirit ornaments are supported and balanced; signature characters are distributed around the front and sides.
- Medium and small ornaments repeat the chosen colors and fill gaps without hiding every branch.
- Fragile or detachable pieces are out of reach of children and pets.
- Topper and skirt are secure, and the skirt does not cover electrical connections or live-tree water access.
- Lights can be switched off without climbing, and they are switched off before bed or when leaving home.
With that sequence, Spirit’s character designs remain the visual focus while layered lighting, repeated color and varied depth make the entire tree read as a deliberate composition.
